The Whispers of Arcanum

Chapter 20: Reflections and Repercussions

It had been a few days since the battle that claimed Lily’s life, and the team was still reeling from the loss. The mood in the hideout was somber, and everyone was trying to come to terms with what had happened.

Maya had taken the loss especially hard, and had isolated herself in her room. Nico spent most of his time trying to comfort Maya but Maya took this to heart, while Orion had been keeping to himself, lost in thought.

Phoenix was the only one who seemed to be taking the loss well. She had always been the most optimistic and carefree member of the team, but even she couldn’t ignore the gravity of the situation.

Eden had been noticeably absent, and the team had been unable to reach her. After Lily’s death, they couldn’t help but wonder if she had something to do with it.

Finally, after days of silence, Eden appeared in the hideout. The team immediately confronted her, accusing her of being the mole. Eden didn’t deny it, and admitted that she had been working with the enemy all along.

“I know, I know it was wrong and I shouldn’t have done things the way I did. I came here to apologize. It was me—” That’s all Eden said before leaving.

The team was devastated. They had trusted Eden, and now they were left wondering how much damage she had done. They couldn’t help but think of all the times they had shared their plans and vulnerabilities with her just for her to leak them to the government and then to kill Lily This hurt all over again. Some of them thought that maybe the government had just captured her again but they kept thinking of the way it happened and it reassured them.

As the team sat in silence, Maya suddenly stood up. “We can’t let Eden’s betrayal stop us from living the life Lily wanted us to,” she declared. “We have to continue our lives just how we did when we were kids.”

The rest of the team looked up at her, and Orion spoke up. “She’s right. We can’t give up on everything. We have to finish what we started as little kids.”

Nico nodded in agreement. “We have to pursue our dreams and have the careers we want.”

Phoenix spoke up, her voice filled with determination. “We did all of this so that we could live freely and now we can.”

The team exchanged an eager look, knowing that their fight was over. Now the only battle they had to face was the battles of their future careers.
