Chapter 63
Chapter 63 Do Not Accept It
“Tell the Board of Directors that the meeting will start at two o’clock, afternoon, sharp in the meeting room.” Wanda nodded and was about to head out to prepare the order but was held back by Gwyneth.
*How is it? How are you coping with your first day as a secretary?”
Gwyneth’s expression had now returned to her gentle demeanor. She was chatting casually with Wanda as if nothing had happened in the first place. Wanda gave a bitter smile as she heard the question.
“Ms. Glen. I only started this role about two hours ago. That’s why…”
“Right. You seem fine these past two hours…”
Wanda received praise so easily and did not know how to respond. She could not help but think that her days at the company would be full of trials and would definitely not be boring. With the remaining half an hour, Gwyneth took Wanda by the wrist and taught her to brew coffee.
Gwyneth had done it with a few reasons in mind. Firstly, it was to let Wanda get used to the feeling of working for her. Secondly, it was to let the old coots sitting on the board wait a little longer. The more impatient they were, the easier her days would be.
That afternoon at the Glen Corporation’s largest meeting room, Gwyneth sat at the head of the table while Wanda sat behind her, taking down meeting minutes. On both sides of the table sat the shareholders, all fifty and above, of the Glen Corporation.
“It is common knowledge that every Board of Directors of a corporation would normally not be seen in the company, and every one of them is extremely irresponsible.”
Gwyneth placed both her hands on the table, toyed around with her pen, and had a smile on her face. Her look right then was no different from an innocent young lady. In reality, she had everyone in the palm of her hand.
“It seems everyone present is extremely responsible. I would see you almost every other day while holding this position.”
This statement may sound innocuous, but everyone present had their own backstory, making them uneasy. Beads of sweat could even be seen on some with low mental resilience. They were sweating from their foreheads.
Sitting behind Gwyneth, even Wanda experienced the commanding presence of the CEO she worked for for the first time. Her heart thumped, not from fright but from admiration.
Looks can be deceiving for some, and it made sense that they could attain a lot more than a normal person would.
Seeing that she had almost completely set the pace in the room, Gwyneth smiled and threw the pen onto the table. “So, what is everyone’s purpose in finding me this time?”
After the question was asked, the investor looked at each other before the one among them slowly opened their mouths, “Ms. Glen, you should probably know by now that there is a tourism project being developed at Glacier Lake.”
“Of course.”
Gwyneth nodded with a smile on her face just as her emotions mirrored her expression. These people were obviously impatient.
“Well, I went there recently and found the place was much better than the rumors.”
“That’s right, that’s right. What Mr. Leonard said is true. I also went there for a look a few days ago…”
Gwyneth cut in without waiting for the previous person to finish talking, tired of all the cliché responses. “Is it really that beautiful? So that means we will strike gold if we develop the place?”
Wouldn’t it be so much easier if I tag along with what these old coots wanted since they praised Glacier Lake to such an exaggerated
extent?”
When everyone heard what Gwyneth said, they did not expect she would be so easily convinced. They immediately went straight to the
point.
“Ms. Glen is right.”
“We discussed and wondered if Ms, Glen is interested in investing in the project in Glacier Lake?”
‘They had finally got to the main point.‘
Gwyneth acted surprised and slightly leaned forward, giving the impression that she was very interested.
“Invest in Glacier Lake? This is a government project, my fellow directors. I might not even get it even if I wanted to.”
“What are you talking about, Ms. Glen?”
“That’s right. With the huge resources and network behind the corporation, the government would be more than glad to let the Glen
Corporation invest in it.”
Gwyneth was impressed with herself for holding her laughter in from seeing the cordial coordination between these men. She wondered
when the bursts of laughter would erupt, seeing the men act like clowns or even group standup comedians.
“Since everyone took so much effort to propose the project’s investment, sure. I’d do so. Wouldn’t I look stupid otherwise?”
“We feel relieved hearing you say that, Ms. Glen.”
“Alright. I’m relieved and appreciate everyone for taking such trouble to convince me.”
Having said that much, Gwyneth glanced at everyone.
‘Good. Every one of them pitched in. This will make things so much easier for me to handle.‘
“In that case, I’ll not take more of your time. Let’s end the meeting here. I’ll be going to look around the project at Glacier Lake.”
When they heard what she said, the Board could not help but immediately take their leave to help hasten their plan’s success. Once the crowd left. Wanda, who had not said anything throughout the meeting, could not help but speak up. “Ms. Glen, this project will not have
any returns.”
