Chapter 20
Chapter 20 First Love Afterall 1
Liam gently patted Elizabeth’s hand, signaling her to relax. Then, after instructing the doctor to keep a close watch on her, he stepped out of the hospital room and called Gwyneth.
Gwyneth’s mood was already less than pleasant due to the ambiguous photo. To make matters worse, she received a call from the person. responsible, though who that person truly was remained a matter of debate. She rolled her eyes and answered, “What do you want?”
Since disembarking from the plane the day before. Liam had not seen Gwyneth. Although they lived in the same mansion, given their current relationship, he did not feel it was appropriate to disturb her. Remembering the last couple of days they had spent together, Liam’s eyes softened as soon as the call connected.
“I’m at the hospital”
Even if she did not want to admit it. Gwyneth’s heartbeat quickened at the mention of the word ‘hospital.” “You’re at the hospital? What
happened?”
Liam, detecting the change in Gwyneth’s tone, was quite satisfied with her reaction. “Elizabeth is feeling unwell. The doctors just examined her but couldn’t find anything wrong.”
“What a lunatic jerk!” Gwyneth gritted her teeth, thinking to herself, ‘He always has to use that breathless tone of his, doesn’t he?” She was irritated by Liam’s sense of urgency. “So, you want me to come over and take a look?”
“Of course, if you could come, that would be great.”
*Mr. Luther, is this how you ask for a favor?” Despite her words, Gwyneth was already getting up. It did not matter who was involved; as a doctor, she would not ignore a patient. She heard Liam’s breathing on the other end of the phone, and after a moment, his deep voice came through. “Please.” Gwyneth, who was putting on her coat, paused for a moment. She did not expect Liam to actually say those words. But when she thought about it, he had said it for Elizabeth’s sake, and it made her feel a strange lightness in her chest. She moved
her mouth, hung up the phone, and slammed the door as she left.
On the other end of the call, Liam heard the sudden busy tone and could not help but force a chuckle. In his entire life, he had hung up on countless people, but this was the first time a woman had hung up on him. What was terrifying was that he could not even bring himself
to be angry.
Hall an hour later, Gwyneth walked in wearing a white lab coal, her gaze moving straight past Liam. “What’s bothering you?” As she watched Elizabeth slowly open her eyes, Gwyneth’s eyes remained emotionless.
“Well I just feel… unwell…” Elizabeth had never imagined that Liam would call Gwyneth. She was already pretending to be sick and fell
even more frustrated.
This time, Liam left the room without Gwyneth needing to ask. A few minutes later, the door to the hospital room opened again, and a nurse emerged carrying medical records. Puzzled, Liam hurried back in. Gwyneth glanced at him and then scoffed. 1
“She’s not sick.”
With a very certain answer, Liam looked at Gwyneth and then shifted his gaze to Elizabeth. Seeing the charade was up, Elizabeth’s face turned pale to flushed. Eventually, unable to avoid Liam’s inquisitive gaze, she spoke up, her voice even a little hoarse.
*Liam, I just wanted to see you. I felt lonely in the hospital, but I had no reason to call you, so I…”
If anyone else had played such a petty trick, Liam’s usual aura would have made the entire room feel uneasy. But seeing Elizabeth like this.
he could not bring himself to be hard on her. After all, her place as his first love was untouchable. In the end, Liam turned to Gwyneth, his
expression softening.
“Let me treat you to dinner as an apology for wasting your time.”
“I don’t need it. The food in those restaurants outside doesn’t suit my taste. If I eat something that doesn’t agree with me, it could make me sick.” Gwyneth, her hands in the pockets of her white lab coat, shot Elizabeth a cold look before turning to leave. It had to be said; this
woman was a unique presence. But a few seconds later, she heard footsteps following her and sighed in resignation.
“Mr. Butler, if you chase after me like this, what about the poor woman in the hospital room?”
“You just said eating out isn’t clean, right? So let’s go home and cook. I’ve been missing your cooking.”
Gwyneth opened her mouth to respond but found hersell at a loss for words. “We’ve already been caught up in rumors of a scandal, and
you don’t even try to avoid suspicion. Do you want to make things even worse?” 1
At that moment, Elizabeth sat on the hospital bed, thinking about Liam chasing alter Gwyneth and clenching her fists. ‘All these years, I’ve never seen him treat any woman with such attentiveness and care.’ Injustice and jealousy welled up within her. I’ve been waiting so long for their divorce, and now what’s going on?”
