The Sugilite Prince

Chapter 25 - Duty Bound

Their eyes met across the room as she finally looked away from her precious Sugi. She could feel Jeon’s gaze always following her around and she wondered if he really thought her so dangerous. How could she ever hurt a hair on his beautiful violet head? Even now she loved him dearly and her eyes soften just thinking about him again. Her hands instinctively going to hug their child that still grew inside her. She looks up again to see Jeon’s gaze still on her, but his shy eyes dart away as soon as he realizes she has noticed him again. The little smile on her face is genuine.

’At least he notices me,′ she thinks.

With all of Sugi’s kind words to her, it wasn’t enough for her. His love for Jimon was blossoming and as much as she wanted his attention, Jimon was always there to steal it their bond growing stronger every day. Just then Sugi spoke to her, but she didn’t catch his words, lost in her own thoughts.

“What is it?” She inquired.

“What do you think we should name the baby?” The proud father asked her.

“Oh!” She looked down to her belly with a warm smile. “I have to see my baby’s face before I can decide.”

“Yes,” Sugi smiled, “besides, first we need to plan the wedding.”

Sugi came towards her and wrapped his arms around her from behind making her blush. A soft sound of surprise escaped her lips. He leaned over and kissed her cheek.

“Sugi, the circumstances being as they are,” she glances down at her pregnant form, “I would prefer it just be us.”

“Okay, Maeve, as you wish. I would like my best friends to be there. Is that alright with you?”

“Sure.” She looks over to Jimon’s serious face.

Maeve walks down the hall her heels clicking on the floor. She can’t wait to escape everyone’s prodding eyes especially Jeon’s. She’s trying really hard to fit in but she is not finding it easy. Every time she catches Sugi kissing Jimon or gazing at him with love, she feels lost and lonely.

She hears someone following her and is annoyed. ‘I can’t even have a moment's peace.’ She quickly turns around to find Jeon standing a few feet away.

Maeve confronts Jeon asking him why he follows her around so much.

“Maeve, it’s my job to watch over you.”

“I understand that, but there is no need to constantly scrutinize everything I do. I am not the enemy.”

“I did not realize I annoy you so much.”

“Well, you do. Please stop.”

“I will ask Sugi if I can place another guard to protect you.”

Maeve nods, but seeing his hurt face she softens. “Jeon, it’s nothing personal. I’m just not used to this life.”

“I know and I’m sorry.”

“You can stay,” she says softly.

“Maeve, I have to protect you and your baby. If anything happened to you, I would have failed my duty.”

“Thank you, Jeon. Are we really in so much danger?”

“Unfortunately, yes.”

Maeve is taken aback by his response. “I didn’t know, sorry.”

“Sugi tries to keep it from you so you don’t worry, but things are not going as well as they could. There are times when our defenses have been breached.”

“Please watch over him, Jeon. I love him so much.”

“I know,” he says smiling to her.
