The Sugilite Prince

Chapter 26- Vows

It was the night before the wedding, Maeve stepped out onto the courtyard to look at the beautiful surroundings where they planned to tie the knot. The garden was even more beautiful by the light of the moon and she enjoyed walking there occasionally hearing the crunch of leaves as Jeon followed her. She sighed at the thought that she spends more time with him than with Sugi, the man she was about to marry. As she looked out, she caught sight of Sugi and Jimon also enjoying the garden by moonlight.

Maeve looks down not noticing her own tears landing on her clasped hands. She hears Jeon clear his throat as he comes near. The handsome guard always watching with his intense eyes and she willingly collapses into his arms.

“Maeve, I’m here for you, please don’t be sad.”

“I can’t help it. Tomorrow we wed and yet he doesn’t love me. Should I go through with it?”

Jeon pauses caressing her blond hair. “I keep dreaming of you and in my dream, you smile happily at me. You look so beautiful with flowers in your hair and you are cradling a little child with violet hair.”

“Really? Do you think this could be my future?”

“It is. You will be happy here. We will be together.”

Maeve looks away towards where Sugi was standing. “I was just a child when I first saw him. He was so silly spinning around in the autumn breeze trying to catch the falling leaves. He made me smile watching him fall dizzy to the ground giggling joyfully. I didn’t know who he was but it didn’t matter. I couldn’t get that sweet giggle out of my mind. I wanted to be as happy as he was.”

Jeon’s face gets serious. He wanted to confess to her how he has fallen in love with her, but it’s risky. Someone like him can’t be in a relationship. He made a vow of celibacy when he became a palace guard and up until now, it had been an easy choice. Instead of telling her his feelings, he says, “Go back inside, Maeve, it’s getting cold.”

“Tell me again about your childhood,” her sweet eyes look up to him not wanting to lose his company.

“Princess, tomorrow you marry your prince. Don’t you think you should get some rest?”

She pouts cutely at him but does what he says walking back into the elven palace with her handsome guard.

‘Braver is he who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies.’
