Chapter 2
At the police station, Christine recounted the events, including Blanche drugging her. Once the statement was recorded, the police informed her that she could leave, for now, as they would continue their investigation.
As Christine walked out of the police station, a swarm of journalists instantly surrounded her, their questions piercing and sharp.
“Miss Paul, you’re about to marry Duncan Foster from Foster Group. Why would you have a rendezvous with Mr. Erickson?”
“Miss Paul, Mr. Erickson died of a heart attack, and rumors suggest that you gave him a large amount of enhancing drugs. If you have such great needs, why choose a fifty–year–old man? Is it some peculiar fetish?”
The reporters‘ questions were like slaps hitting Christine’s face, one after another. She did not answer. She knew these people were brought here by Blanche. Their purpose was to embarrass her. She did not explain. She just wanted to break free from the clutches of those unscrupulous journalists.
At that moment, a black car pulled up.
Christine recognized the vehicle and managed to get in against all odds.
“Miss Paul, are you alright?” the chauffeur, Garfield Hill, asked with a concerned and sincere voice.
“I’m fine, Christine replied.
Though she said she was fine, Christine felt like she was on the verge of collapsing. This situation, coupled with the old man Mr. Erickson’s passing, would ruin her reputation.
“Mrs. Foster heard about what happened to you. I was specifically sent to pick you up. There are too many reporters. It wouldn’t be convenient for her to appear. Mrs. Foster asked me to tell you that she believes in you. Your marriage with Mr. Foster won’t be affected, Garfield conveyed.
“In the face of such a situation, Mrs. Foster still believes in me?” The darkness in Christine’s eyes spread, and she raised her head after a moment, speaking with determination. “Please tell Mrs. Foster there’s no need for her to argue with the Foster family because of me. The marriage between Duncan and I is now off!”
Christine’s eyes became slightly moist. She had gone through such a distressing experience, being taken to the police station, yet no one from her own family came to pick her up or send anyone for her. Instead, it was Sabrina, Duncan’s mother, who sent someone to retrieve her.
The Foster family’s chauffeur escorted Christine back to the Paul family. As soon as she entered the house, she received a resounding slap.
“You shameless creature! You’ve brought shame upon the Paul family.” Brigham Paul, her father, angrily accused her. Christine stared coldly at Brigham. Since her mother’s death when she was eight, although she and Brigham lived under the same roof, they were like strangers.
Covering her reddened cheek from the impact, Christine’s eyes welled up with countless emotions. She furrowed her brows and stared unwaveringly at Brigham, saying, “Do you even know the truth? How dare you lay a hand on me!”
Blanche, standing nearby, spoke softly. “Sis, how can you speak to Dad in such a tone?”
Christine suddenly looked at Blanche, her eyes devoid of warmth, causing Blanche to feel a sense of unease under her gaze.
Christine arched an eyebrow, her voice deep and filled with intense anger.
“Blanche, I used to consider you my sister. I thought you were different from your mother, but it turns out you’re just as despicable! There’s no limit to your vileness!”
Furious after hearing this, Brigham raised his hand to strike Christine once again.
“You crazy girl, I’ll kill you!”
However, Salena Paul quickly restrained Brigham, pretending to be concerned. “Brigham, calm down. Mind your blood pressure. If something happens to you, what will happen to me and Blanche? Though Christine made a mistake, you should talk to her calmly. She won’t repeat it.”
Blanche and Salena truly excelled in the art of portraying themselves as innocent and virtuous.
“Christine, look at how kind Salena is to you. Speaking up for you and all. Do you even realize what you’ve done?”
Salena twisted her slender waist as she approached Christine, saying sarcastically, “Christine, you’re such a fool. Mr. Erickson was so old. Don’t you find it disgusting? And your desires are so strong, to the point that you’ve exhausted him to death. Your reputation is ruined now, and the Erickson family will come looking for trouble. It’s best to send you abroad to Lay low.”
Dad, Mom is right, Christine’s reputation is in tatters now. Her marriage with Duncan is surely off. It’ll only bring criticism If she stays here. It’s better to send her abroad quickly.”
Chapter 2
Christine looked at Blanche and Salena, her eyebrows slightly raised and her tone filled with disdain. “You’re in such a hurry to send me abroad. Are you afraid that people will find out it was you who framed me?”
Blanche blinked her innocent eyes and said, “Sis, you can’t throw dirt on me. I could be your scapegoat for those small things before, but this time you’ve caused such huge trouble that I can’t bear the blame for you. I’m sorry.
Blanche played the pitiful role as if Christine often did terrible things and made her take the blame.
“Christine, you’ve gone too far. Your sister is pure and kind–hearted. How could she possibly frame you? Did she force you to sleep with the old man? You’re shameless!”
Christine could not believe her own father was using such venomous words to describe her.
Her lips tightened, and her clear eyes lost all warmth beneath her curled lashes.
“It was Blanche who drugged me. I’ve already explained everything to the police. They have the evidence proving that Blanche framed me. Once I press charges against her, she’ll go to jail!”
Brigham’s face instantly turned ugly. He yelled at Christine in a harsh voice, “You monster! What did you say to the police? Do you want to send your sister to jail? Are you insane? Even if it was truly her doing, you shouldn’t press charges against her. Your reputation has already been destroyed. Do you want your sister’s reputation to be ruined as well?”
At that moment, Christine realized that Brigham was no longer her father. He was Blanche’s father. Even knowing that Blanche was the mastermind behind it all, he still wanted to protect her, even if it meant Christine’s complete downfall.
“This place hasn’t been my home for a long time. I’m leaving!”
Six years later, in the top medical research institute in Cardolia, a voice suddenly broke the tranquility.
“Dr. Paul, wake up. It’s time to take the blame.”
The gentle voice of her assistant, Vita Macy, instantly shattered Christine’s drowsiness.
“My two little rascals have messed up our system again?”
Vita nodded with a sheepish expression. It was only at that moment that Christine realized that she had been engrossed in her research for the past three days, to the point of neglecting her sleep and completely forgetting to go home.
Six
years ago, when she arrived in Archiland, she discovered that she was pregnant.
At the time, she was determined to have an abortion, but the examination revealed that she was carrying triplets.
Moreover, she had a thin uterine wall since birth, and if she had gone through with the abortion, she would never have had the chance to be a mother.
Considering that she had no intention of getting married and the children’s father was already deceased, she thought it would save her a lot of trouble.
So, she chose to give birth.
However, during the delivery, the youngest daughter was stillborn.
Fortunately, her two sons were healthy.
She named them Oliver Paul and Milo Paul.
In these six years, Oliver and Milo had given her a sense of home and family, flooding her with maternal love and the determination to protect them at all costs and ensure their healthy growth.
But the thought of taking the blame for them now made her regret giving birth to these two.
