Chapter 153
King Braedon POV
We stepped inside the study, James ushering Sarah to a chair, a gentle smile on his face. It was almost laughable, how much he had changed when the two of them had become mates. Now instead of bickering constantly, the two of them were loving towards each other, their tones soft and filled with nothing but kind words and respect.
"So what exactly is it that you wanted to talk about James?" I asked stiffly, sitting down in my large leather chair and studying him with narrowed eyes "what exactly is it that you didn't want Blair to know?" I asked a little annoyed.
James had the good grace to look a little sheepish. "Forgive me if I came across a little impudent Braedon" he said rubbing his neck "but I thought it best if we kept this from Blair, just for now."
I sighed and motioned for him to continue, while Sarah reached over and clasped her mate's hand, encouraging him with a smile and a nod.
"It's about Blair's lineage," he said and I leaned forward eagerly.
"Don't tell me you know who her parents might be" I said keenly, as James's eyes observed me silently "Or do you merely have a suspicion?"
James was silently mind-linking someone as I watched confused. "I have somebody who may be able to solve the mystery, Your Highness," he said quietly.
I frowned. What on earth did he mean? Did somebody from my own pack know something? I was intrigued as a knock came from outside the door. "Enter," James said authoritatively.
Sarah merely gave me a shrug. She was just as much in the dark as I was. I was not prepared for who entered the room though. My mouth opened slightly as the woman stepped to the center of the room and slowly bowed her head, her eyes darting between myself and James. "Julia," I said confused "I don't understand James, what would Julia have to do with all of this?"
"Julia, perhaps you should shed some light" James suggested as the woman began to tremble.
In all my years, I had never seen her look so nervous. "You know that I came seeking sanctuary just over eighteen years ago your Highness" Julia began, wringing her hands together and avoiding my gaze.
"Yes," I said nodding "and my father employed you to work as a housekeeper and you've slowly worked your way up since" I added, still bewildered.
Julia might look young, thanks to her shifter genes, but she was in fact older than most people took her to be. It had never occurred to me though, to ever look into her background, a mistake, I now realized but I had known the woman forever and trusted her implicitly. "Well before I came to your pack, I was once a midwife," she said in a low whisper "and I lived in the same pack that Blair came from" she admitted sounding embarrassed.
I raised an eyebrow. This was news to me. I glanced at James. "How did you discover this?" I asked quietly.
"I swear, I didn't know you were trying to find out information about Blair's parentage, or I would have come forward sooner, but I wasn't aware of her being an Alpha wolf either, so there was no way for me to know for certain" Julia cried out in distress. "Julia, calm down, you're not in trouble" I assured her.
She was breathing heavily, her chest rising up and down rapidly, her cheeks turning a crimson red. She was clearly distressed. "You know who Blair's parents are, don't you?" I asked quietly.
She ducked her head. "I do" she admitted "I have never been more ashamed than what I was instructed to do that night." My gaze was shrewd "Blair was never abandoned in the forest by another Alpha was she?" I said knowingly.
I had my suspicions before, but this proved it. What a bastard. To willingly leave his own daughter in an orphanage to be brought up as an omega in his own pack. The a*****e should be drawn and quartered for what he'd done to his own flesh and blood. I gritted my teeth and forced my body to relax as I met Julia's eyes, determined to hear the rest of her tale.
Julia's eyes filled with tears. "No, Your Highness. But that's not the worst of it. Not by any means" she choked out "You see there were two girls born on the same night by the same woman. But when it was discovered that one of the twin girls possessed a heart condition or defect as it were, she immediately wanted to kill it."
I drew in a deep breath, while Sarah looked indignant and James looked slightly sick.
"So why didn't she?" I asked gravely "What prevented her from killing her daughter?" who I now knew was Blair. Julia met my eyes "I did. I'm the one who persuaded the two of them to abandon her in the forest and have her be raised as an orphan. I couldn't have a baby's death on my conscience. The Alpha was more susceptible to my pleas and agreed, but the woman, she was filled with contempt for the poor child and was bitter about having given birth to something that was less than perfect."
"How did they keep the fact they abandoned one of their children secret?" I asked and Julia's eyes met with more tears. She looked truly devastated by the events that had occurred that night, even though she would have had little choice in the matter. It was a miracle she had managed to convince them to allow the baby girl to live.
"They didn't know they were having twins until the birth. Afterwards, they declared they had given birth to one healthy baby girl, and she was celebrated, while I snuck into the woods and left the other one to supposedly be found."
I winced. "Then why did you leave the pack?"
She looked at me incredulously "because I knew my time would be numbered. Luna Bianca would never have let me live. Not with the knowledge that I possessed. She doesn't like loose ends. As soon as I was finished, I ran for it, denouncing my ties to the pack and becoming a rogue until I came to your pack where I knew I would be safe from her."
