Chapter 150
Third Person POV
"Another doctor?" she queried and her mother looked at her impatiently.
"To keep them sedated," she said with a degree of annoyance "and to keep pumping them with hormones to make them more fertile. One doctor between so many girls isn't enough. We need to find somebody trustworthy. With the amount of money we're making, we need never have to rely on your father's paltry wealth ever again, and with the treaties we're developing with the Alpha's using our services, our pack is going to become one of the strongest in the country" she announced proudly.
"But what are we going to do with father?" Brynn asked, nibbling her lip and looking a tiny bit worried "We can't keep him in the dungeon forever" she added.
Her mother waved a dismissive hand at her, narrowing her eyes "I don't intend to keep him down there forever" she said quietly "In time, when he is weakened enough that I don't need to fear him managing to overpower the guards and when he is no longer able to stand or he loses his mind, I will have him executed in front of the pack as a warning to obey our commands and as an example as to what happens to those who even consider trying to leave."
Brynn felt slightly nausea. "Mother, he's my father" she protested, leaning forward and staring into her mother's glacial eyes "We can't just kill him."
Her mother snorted and then patted Brynn's hand. "Brynn, you are too softhearted for your own good. Stop considering him as your father and think of him as merely a s***m donor. We cannot afford to hold onto him. Harden your heart or you will fail as the strongest Luna this pack has ever seen."
Brynn swallowed hard. For a moment she wavered but greed won in the end and she simply nodded, pleasing her mother greatly. "That's my girl," she said approvingly "Keeping your mind on the important matters. You will even surpass my greatness and your children will be strong like you," she said.
Brynn ducked her head. Despite everything she and Ashton had done, she couldn't get pregnant but her mother remained faithful that it would only be a matter of time. Her mother was obsessed with having a grandchild. Brynn could feel the limo beginning to slow and looked at her mother questioningly as her mother rapped on the window, the driver pushing it down.
"Driver," Bianca said sharply "Why are we slowing down?" she questioned haughtily.
The driver looked over his shoulder apologetically and then motioned forward where two SUVs were blocking the way. He stopped and two men approached them, speaking in hushed tones to the driver. Bianca and Brynn strained their ears, but the driver put the window back up during the discussion.
Bianca exhaled. The window was put back down again and the men were gone. The driver looked apologetic as he began to turn back around. "I'm sorry your graciousness, but everybody who was at the Summit is to return there at once and remain there under the Alpha King's orders," he said tightly.
"Do you think he's discovered our secret?" Brynn whispered and Bianca hushed her.
"Apparently his mate has been poisoned and they are looking for the culprit" the driver continued as he turned the limo.
Oh. Brynn gulped. Bianca glared at her daughter who merely blinked at her innocently.
She should have known that her daughter would act impulsively. She clenched her hands into fists. "What have you done?" she said tersely.
"I just wanted to teach her her place" Brynn whined.
Bianca put a hand to her temple, feeling a headache coming on "You stupid girl, you've put our lives in jeopardy, all because you couldn't keep your cool" she admonished "You better hope that he doesn't question us about anything but the poison and even then if you're alpha toned, you might give us away" she snapped.
Brynn looked at Ashton panicked. He glared at her "I told you to leave it alone" he snarled.
"I just" Brynn stammered.
Bianca groaned, the limousine making its way back towards the pack and the summit, her face contorted into an expression of rage. "Pray that he is too involved with his mate to question us himself" she hissed "And so help me god, when this is over Brynn" she warned, her tone dark and dangerous.
Brynn sulked, staring out the window. They pulled back in and the driver gallantly opened the doors for them. As usual, none of them thanked him.
They gathered near the marquee, along with the rest of the Alphas and Luna's, waiters, waitresses, and pack members. Bianca fought the urge to fidget, relieved to see that it was the Beta who was motioning people forward in order to question them. "We were already gone" she instructed Ashton and Brynn in a low voice "Keep reiterating that and we should be able to leave within a few minutes" she prayed, straightening her shoulders and feigning outrage.
Beta James motioned her forward and her steps were clipped and short, her face scowling blackly. "I take outrage at being summoned back to this summit after being ordered to leave" she snapped, as she entered the marquee, following behind the Beta, who eyed her with disdain "Obviously my daughter and son in law, were with me and as such could not have been involved in something so heinous" she added, sitting down with her back straight and her hands folded in her lap, the very epitome of grace and authority "and I am offended that you would even think that somebody of my stature and standing would need to do something so low and underhanded. I pray you get whoever is responsible for hurting the Luna queen and that they are punished for their impudence, but can assure you that neither I nor anybody I traveled with, had anything to do with it" she declared passionately and stared down the Beta whose face was grim as he began to question her quickly.
