Chapter 34
Dear diary, the day of our plan finally came. Adrenalin was rushing through my veins and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who was nervous. Our plan started as predicted. We were all equipped with ear buds, providing communication. We were all connected, so we could all talk to each other. Each got a gun and enough ammunition to take hundred people. I only bought the best guns, silent, but deadly. Rei decrypted the security system faster than he expected, so it was no problem to go anywhere we wanted to go. He also rigged all of our chips, so everyone was able to take the train to the building, which is in Rome. Of course we went in separated groups and Ian and I, were together. Meanwhile Quin, who stayed behind, tabbed into the frequency of the biggest network, broadcasting worldwide. She does that while we are riding the train. We wait for her command, when it safe to go in, when the footage starts to air. As we expected, everyone at EasyWay went mad when they learned what was showing on television. It was all they were focused on. And so was the world. Panic takes over the building. They try taking it down, but the footage was holding up nicely. Quin did a good job. That’s when we went in. We all walk in together on Quins command, just as she disables all the cameras. We walk in and the same girl that Stan threated sits in the lobby. This time unfortunately, she got shot. We go into the elevators; everyone will cover their assigned floor. Ian and I got the seventeenth, which was the highest. Our mission was to get information, try to find Stan but mostly, it was to let Rei work his magic. After all, we still didn’t know enough and the only way for us to know everything is to get it out of them or read it of their computer system. Rei was on the floor below us, where the main computer system laid. Security quickly responded, faster than it did before. We barely leave the elevator when we hear gunshots in our earbuds. There were more security guards and police man than we expected. Rei was alone on his floor, so Ian and I had no choice but to abandon our mission to go help him. Just as we leave, the floor gets overflowed with armed security guards. We got away just in time. We get to the sixteenth floor, which was surprisingly empty, at first. We step out of the elevator, take a few steps and suddenly we hear them coming. “Rei where are you?” I nervously ask. “Sixteenth floor.” He answers. “Where exactly on the sixteenth floor?” I hiss back. Just then we hear they were closer. Suddenly, shooting began. “The last room! At the very end of the hallway!” Rei yells in our ears. We run towards the room. In defense, we were forced to hurt two security guards. Ian takes one of them hostage and threatens hell kill them if they don’t stop shooting. Some did stop, but not all. Bullet hits my upper left arm. I fire back and just by luck, I manage to take one down. “Open the damn door Rei!” Ian yells. He quickly does. We barely escape the bullets. The cop Ian had as a hostage sadly worked as a human shield. We somehow managed to slip in the room, I still don’t remember clearly how we were able to escape death then. Heavy steel doors close and we hear banging on the door. Soon gunshots follow. I hear more shooting in my ears. Our people were screaming, their lived were being taken away. Rei was nearly done when the door started to give out. “Hurry.” Ian whispers, ready to attack. Time was running faster and faster, the doors were creaking, hearts were racing. We knew we didn’t stand a chance against them, against the enemy on the other side of that door. Rei needed more time, so Ian and I blocked the door with whatever we could find. Just few file cabinets. “How do we get out?” I nervously ask. “Air went”, Ian quickly replies. Suddenly, we see light creaking through the doors. Just then, Rei yells, “I’m done!” Relieve overwhelms me, but we still weren’t in the clear. “Go! Fast!” Ian yells. Rei is the first through the air went, with information he needed. Just as I was about to go the doors give out. Cops, security guards come bursting through it. We were trapped and caught. “Drop your weapons now!” One of the yells. What other choice did we have but to obey? “Do it.” We hear Quin whisper in our ears. They immediately cuff us and drag us away. We were taken to separated rooms, just like the ones they took Stan and Amy to. While we were being dragged, I hear Quin giving orders. “Retreat. Anyone who can, leave now! Don’t use elevators, use fire escape stairs! Don’t go to the park! Disappear in the crowned public. Come back after midnight!” I wondered how many survived and what will happen next to us. Now, Ian and I were on separated floors. I land in my cell and Ian in his. “Ian are you okay?” I say with worry, hoping he could hear me. “I’m fine. And you?” He replies and I feel relieved when I hear his voice. “I’m fine too.” I say, even though clearly none of us were. “Ian, Addilyn, can you get the earbuds out?” Quin asks. “Sure.” We answer and somehow shake them off. “Good. They’ll be destroyed. They can’t find us.” I hear Quin say just before the earbuds self-destruct. They were gone, just like my connection with the rest. I was alone. Panicking, I lost sense of time. I didn’t know how much time has passed, how long was I locked up. Later I was told it was three hours, although it seemed much longer. Questions, dark scenarios run through my head. Will they leave her to starve? Or do something worse? What will happen to me or to Ian? Is he still alive? What if I run out of oxygen? All of a sudden, doors open. I still had a knife, hidden in my boot, but I knew it wouldn’t do much damage. I didn’t stand a chance to someone with a gun. My room was dark, light shines through the doors, blinding me temporarily. “Addilyn, we must hurry.” I hear a familiar voice. It was Rei. Relieved, I wasted no time. He quickly drags me out, cuffs me and only then I notice him wearing a guard’s uniform. He loudly says, “You’ll get what’s coming to you.” Smart as he was, acting was not his strong suite. We walk towards the elevator, nervous, but no one was stopping us. In the elevator he uncuffs me, hands me a gun. No one said a word. We arrive at the second floor. “Safest way to escape is here.” He tells me. The floor was empty and before I knew it, we were out. Safe. We walk faster and faster until we run. No one was following us, but just in case. We finally reach a narrow, side alley, where we were safe, but alone. I expect to see our people. “Where is everyone? Where is Ian?” I ask him. I don’t get an answer, so I ask again. “He’s still in.” He tells me.
