The murder card

Chapter 23

Dear diary, nothing has been going on in my sad, miserable and empty life. Two weeks have already passed and still I wasn’t able to find Ian. I’m starting to lose hope. Even work has been uneventful, I feel there is nothing there for me, I feel I belong with Ian’s people. The only luck I’ve had in the last few weeks was getting information for him. First, I started with copying the footage from security cameras. I started with the ones in the storage and the back, looking over the employees but then I started to think, if I could do that, I can get the footage from the rest of the cameras. So I did. It wasn’t hard, just taking a lot of time and hiding. Finally, I was able to pull it off. I was starting to get paranoid, that I would get caught, but I didn’t. Soon after I did that, I started working on another little project. At first I wasn’t sure if it was possible, but somehow I managed to copy their entire store system and all of the files the store had on its computer. That however, was a little harder. I started with a small copy, something that wouldn’t raise any suspicions, a copy of a receipt. It’s a good thing I did that because only by doing so, I was able to see, the system makes a log of everything that happens on it, even when someone makes simply and far from important copies. So I had to think outside the box. I hadn’t a clue on how would I copy everything without being noticed. That suddenly, it dawned on me. The simplest, old method. A USB stick. By now they are almost obsolete, only used for storage, storage of important documents that could otherwise be lost. Or to hide something without a trace. So I finally figured it out. If I simply download the copies to the stick they won’t remain in the store computer system, they will only exist on the stick. Therefore, there will be no trace of me doing any copies. In theory it sounded good, but I needed to be sure, so I tested it out. I can’t describe how relieved I pleased I felt when it worked. And to be honest, a little surprised at myself, for being able to accomplish the given task. I felt good about myself and that moment, I was sure I would get Ian back. I guess luck was with me on that day and the next one as well. I was just doing my simple yet stressful job, when I suddenly heard a bang. Someone fired a gun at the store. Just like everyone else, I rushed to see what has happened and there is was, another dead body in front of me, victim of the murder cards. Just then, another idea popped into my head and I executed that one as well. Soon as people saw what was going on, they were no longer interested and just went on with their shopping. The cleaning crew arrived quickly, to take care of the body. “Must be a hard job”, I say to a young boy, cleaning up the mess. “Is any job even easy?” He replied, trying to take the edge of the fact, there was a dead body to clean up. “So, have you been doing this long?” I ask him. “Not really, this is my first week.” The young boy answers back. “So I guess, you don’t know much about this yet, basically you are just helping the real staff.” I say to him. “No that’s not, true. I do the same things as those who have been doing this for years.” He tells me, with slightly wounded ego. “Oh yeah, so where do you take the bodies then?” I say to him, fishing for any kind of information. “Come on, you know I can’t tell you that.” He says. “So, I was right, you don’t know everything.” I say, showing disappointment. “No, I do know. I just can’t tell you.” He says back to me. I ask him, what will it take for him to tell me. “Five thousand Euros”, he says. I had the money, one that Mary paid me for spying and I had no choice but to give it up. I agree and in a jiffy the transaction was done and he told me. “We take the bodies to EasyWay headquarters, every time. Nowhere else.” I was curious upon why they take them there and not to families of the deceased, when told me they weren’t allowed. “I’m not sure about this, as it is only a rumor, but some people who have worked here have heard they use bodies there and not burry them. No one knows why.”
