Chapter 49
The first vampire arrived shortly before the sun came up and since then they have been arriving slowly throughout the day. Their presence had forced the omegas and even some of the warriors to avoid the house completely. Even though werewolves and vampires weren't enemies, they didn't exactly get along either. Instead they tended to avoid contact with one another, with the werewolves keeping to their packs in small towns while the vampires kept to larger cities. Most werewolves could go their entire life never having seen a vampire in real life.
The vampires themselves were an interesting group. Some of them looked like normal office workers but others among them looked as though they were frozen in time at various decades in history. It made me wonder if they dressed like this normally or if they were only doing it to show off how old they were. I couldn't see how some of them could possibly get away with dressing in such a way in everyday life.
"Is there anything that I need to remember when we have our meeting with the vampires?" I asked Elijah as we sat together in his office.
In a few minutes' time we were meant to go downstairs to have dinner with our guests before having a last minute meeting to go over the plan for tomorrow. For the last few days I had been too worried about Arthur to think about the vampires but now I was starting to get worried about how little I knew about them. I didn't even realise that they ate food until Mark came with a list of their food demands for tonight's dinner.
Elijah turned his attention towards me, looking away from his emails for the first time in hours. I had noticed over the last few days that Elijah had a habit of concentrating on his work when he felt anxious. I suppose that was one benefit from this whole Arthur situation, the pack's finances probably haven't been this good in years.
"I'm not sure, I normally leave Mark to deal with the vampires. Maybe we should just keep quiet." Elijah suggested.
"I am not sure I have that in me." I replied. My mouth always seemed to get me into trouble but even so, Ryker was ten times worse than me.
"You can do it. I have faith in you and if you manage to make it through dinner without starting a fight I will give you a reward." He said, winking at me. I couldn't argue against that, I enjoyed taking his punishments but I would like to get a reward at least once.
Luckily, Ryker didn't show up to dinner. It ended up just being the vampires, Mark, Elijah, Ava, Felix and I. Everyone else from our pack decided to give the meal a miss and I was more than happy with that decision because it made for an awkward rather than stressful experience.
The only conversation around the table came from the vampires who seemed intent on trying to prove their own prowess. Talking about how much money they had as well as how many humans they had working for them. I didn't get involved in their conversation but I listened to everything they were saying with interest.
Vampires seemed to be obsessed with money, power and sex. One of the vampires, named Jayne even bragged about having her own harem of men who were infatuated with her. It was incredibly hard for me to stop myself from rolling my eyes when she was talking, but somehow I managed to restrain myself.
"So did you take them all as your mates?" One of the other vampires asked her, clearly taking notes so he could make his own harem.
"No, I just got them addicted to my blood and my pussy." Jayne replied, flashing Elijah a fanged grin which made me feel sick. Elijah gripped my hand tighter as he tried to reassure me. I didn't need reassurance, I needed to rip that vampire's face off.
"What are you going to do if your fated mate turns up?" One of the others asked.
"I will reject him of course, but he will be free to join my harem if he wants." Jayne replied, still looking at Elijah as she spoke. I wasn't sure how much of what she was saying was true or if she was only saying it in the attempt to start some kind of fight. Either way, I hated her.
"Now I know you are full of shit. The moment you see your mate you will change your mind, just like the rest of us." One of the others replied, causing the rest of them to burst out laughing.
Jayne cleared her throat and was about to object when Ryker walked into the dinning room and their eyes met. That was when the whole night started going to shit. Ryker growled and declared her to be his mate loud enough for the whole house to hear as he stalked towards her.
"That's close enough wolf. What is your name?" She asked, looking down her nose at him.

"Ryker," He purred. He seemed completely unaware of her intentions.
"Your full name."
"Ryker Demont." He had to know what she was about to do at this point but it wasn't showing on his face.
"I, Jayne Sullivan, reject you, Ryker Demont as my mate." Her face showed no emotion at all as she spoke the words to sever their bond. Ryker's face was filled with pain however, as he fell to his knees, clutching his chest.
I wasn't thinking clearly as I got up from my seat and ran over to comfort Ryker. The moment my hands touched his shoulders, Jayne snarled at me and tried to pull me away from her ex-mate. Elijah didn't like that, he growled, his claws and teeth elongating as he got to his feet.
"You will take your hands off my mate unless you want to lose your hands." Elijah growled.
I continued to comfort Ryker as the room quickly split into two separate groups. More than half of the room stood with Elijah as he defended me but there were some vampires who saw Ryker as Jayne's property even though she had rejected him. They felt that she had every right to take him away from the pack and force him to become part of her harem.
"Just because he used to be your mate doesn't mean that you have the right to take him out of here against his will." I growled. This woman was trying my patience, it was as though she wanted me to kill her.
"By vampire law he is still mine, he hasn't even rejected our bond so there is nothing you can do about it." Jayne said, with a smug look on her face.
Ryker groaned and pulled himself to his feet before walking forward to come face to face with Jayne. I could tell from the look on his face that he was still in a great deal of pain.
"Let me make this simple for you. I don't want to be with you and I never will. I, Ryker Demont, accept your rejection." He responded before walking away from her to stand beside me. Elijah would normally dislike having Ryker so close to me but after what had happened he made an exception.
"I think that Ryker has made his position clear. Now I suggest that you drop this before you make an even bigger fool of yourself Jayne." Mark said. He was holding out his hand for her to take as a sign of peace but Jayne didn't take it. She looked at him with such contempt that it even made me feel slightly uncomfortable.
"You have insulted me by treating this mutt as though he is my equal. Do you seriously think that I will continue to work with you after that?" Jayne said, while continuing to look down her nose at us.
"This mutt," Mark started, pointing at Ryker. "Is a beta by birth. That means that in a few years time his power will be greater than yours." He concluded.
Realisation of what she had done washed over her face. Her eyes drifted over towards Ryker and she looked at him properly for the first time since he walked into the room. She tried to hold his gaze but after a few seconds Ryker looked away, focusing his attention on me and Elijah instead.
"Maybe I was a little hasty." She said, her tone much softer now.
"You did me a favour. I would rather spend the rest of my life alone than spend one night with you." Ryker growled before turning around and walking out of the room. Jayne looked crestfallen as her mate left the room without giving so much as a glance in her direction, but I had no sympathy for her. I would like to think that this experience would make her treat people with more respect in the future, but I knew it was unlikely.
"Let's get this meeting started." I suggested. We needed to get this over with before anything else happened, these vampires were going to be more trouble than I had initially anticipated.
