Chapter 41 by Ebony Woods
Reuben POV
Fuck, what was I doing? I heard the shot and just knew it couldn’t hit gun Evelyn. Something inside of me took control as I raced towards her, my body being pushed past its limits as I moved the fastest I have ever moved in my life.
She had knocked the boy out of the way, leaving herself to take the brunt of the bullet. But the shooter didn’t move his aim to Rex, he kept it on her.
Why was she now the target?
Her eyes meet mine as I push myself on top of her, knocking us to the ground. Her eyes were wide, not with fear of meeting our maker, but with surprise as to my blocking her from the bullet.
I grunt as the bullet hits me in the back, it stings but nothing that will keep me down. I don’t understand, what would a bullet do to a full
And then I feel it.
It’s been fucking doused in wolfsbane. I could feel it’s burn seeping though the wound and entering my bloodstream, working quickly to try and reach my heart.
“Mum?” Rex screams out to his mum who was laying under my weight, pinned to the ground.
“Stay there!” I hold my hand arm out, telling him to keep back. Donnie had now rushed over to him and was holding him in his arms.
“Restrain the bastard.” I growl to Nate through the mind-link but he already had him by the throat.
“Are you okay?” She struggles to say as her eyes searched mine. I had winded her from knocking her over, well better that than a poisoned bullet in her heart.
I’m pissed off at myself for letting her voice enter my head when it came with dealing with the short prick initially. If I had killed him, this wouldn’t have happened. She wouldn’t have been put in danger. Note to self Reuben, listen to you own gut first!
“Are you hit?” Her voice is laced with concern for my well-being.
“Yes, I’m fine.” I manage to climb off her and turn to look at the coward.
“What did you do that for? I had pushed Rex out of the way?” She mutters under her breath but I pretend not to hear her.
What would I say? How the fuck would I answer that?
“Reuben, your back…” She gasps touching my bullet wound which earns a wince from me.
“I’m fine…” I protest as she lifts my T- shirt up and touches my bare skin. As she touches me, she leaves tingles in her quake. I can’t but help lean into her touch.
“Something is spreading into your veins.” She comments and I can hear the slight fear in her voice. I’ve seen it before. It would look like luminous green as the poison started to work its way through my veins, changing their colour.
“It’s wolfsbane.” I respond coldly looking at the culprit. I wanted to rip his fucking throat out. Was it for shooting me or for aiming at Rex and Evelyn?
“Get him away from me before I do something I’ll regret!” Evelyn suddenly roars unleashing her alpha aura and at first Nate just stares at her, in awe of her aura until a few humans start to enter the graveyard. The gun shotwouldn’t have been missed even by
human ears and this was a small sleepy village, it will be riddled with police any minute.
“Yes Alpha!” Nate responds, pulling him back towards the pub.
“Our car is a couple of miles away…”
Pierce reminds me that we parked the
car in the human driveway.
“Ours is nearby. I’ll go it.” Donnie offers and Evelyn gives a simple nod of approval.
Her hand hasn’t left me, it is now resting on my lower back and in truth I don’t want her to move it away. The warm tingles from her touch are addictive, I didn’t want her hands to ever leave.
“Does he need a hospital Mum?” Rex moves closer, looking at my back.
“No kiddo, I’ll be okay.” “But it’s in your back.” His eyes light up from fascination at my wound.
“I’d rather get you checked out.” He had been in damp cold environments for a few days and I was worried he could be dehydrated.
“The first car is ready!” Donnie calls
out from the bus shelter.
I pick Rex up into my arms, my own son in my arms. A strange sensation that brought me some inner peace.
I walk them both to the car and place Rex in the back seat.
“Get him to the pack hospital and I’ll sort out the mess here.” I command at Donnie.
“The police…” Evelyn starts but I cut her off as she stands in-between the car door and the car seat.
“I’ll sort it, I’ll meet you back at my pack. Don’t stop, I’ll be right behind you.”
I had to call upon my senior police contact, to put the minds of the local police at ease. In the human world I had plenty of contacts and had an alias so that when shit like this happened it could easily be cleaned up.
The dead body in the pub took longer but I went along the lines of drug raid… usually worked.
Pierce had collected the car and was with Nate and I, as we drove the fucker out to a quiet part of the country side. I wanted information and names from him, and would consider a number of methods to get it.
“What are you going to do with me?” He whimpered from the back seat. Nate had driven us to a derelict farm and we were parked up, no one would sense us for miles.
“It’s pretty simple. You tell me why you took the kid and why you shot at the female alpha.”
“I was aiming for the kid.”
“No, you didn’t move you aim and I don’t think you’re that shit of a shot. Who gave you orders to shoot at the female alpha?” I growl, my anger increasing more and more by the minute.
“I don’t know, all my orders are by email or text…they never gave a name.” He whimpers in the back seat, next to Pierce, under my alpha aura. I wasn’t holding it in, he was feeling my intense anger.
“The Alpha King wants to know why you not only kidnapped the child but why you then tried to shoot the mother. I think you owe him an explanation.” Pierce adds to my aura, making the car insufferable.
I was getting concerned that Evelyn made it safely back to the Red Stone pack. With Nate here I had lost any mind-link ability to check on her if she was still in a close enough range.
“Let’s get back to the pack. I’m sure the cells will make him talk. If not, then I have some ways of making people talk …” I smirk at him as Nate starts the car again and we speed off the farm land and back onto a country lane.
“Last chance!” I turn to face him.
“I…I.”
“We’ll spit it out.” I roar, my anger and frustration blending into one.
My eyes don’t leave his as he seems to be fighting internally with his wolf. He opens his mouth slightly and just when I think he is going to answer me, he flicks his tongue at a back tooth and crunches down on to something.
What the actual fuck?
His eyes widen in pain and he starts to froth with foam at the mouth.
“Shit, Nate stop the car!” I roar at Nate who follows my orders immediately and slams the breaks. I rush out, yanking his door open and pull him out onto the road.
“You prick!” I yell at him as I try to open his mouth as his body shakes violently from the poison in his mouth. I manage to open his mouth only to touch the wolfsbane that was burning away his flesh and mind.
“What is it?” Pierce asks as he stands next to me.
“A hidden wolfsbane capsule in case he was captured for torture…fuck!” He knew he wouldn’t survive the journeybut I wanted answers before then. Now I’m back to square fucking one.
