Chapter 42 by Ebony Woods
Evelyn POV
“Noah…Noah, get to the medical centre now!” I command through the mind- link as soon as I can feel myself close enough to Noah to use it.
The journey was awful, I kept looking behind to see if Reuben was following in Pierce’s car. My wolf felt uneasy leaving him but I had to get Rex out of there.
The journey seemed to take too long, even with Donnie going fast, I couldn’t manage to keep my aura in. It was swirling around in the car, I couldn’t rein it in.
Why weren’t they following? He said he would be right behind us. My mind was going into overdrive about what had happened and what could be happening right now.
I should of staved.
The poison was spreading, Reuben’s veins started turning luminous green in front of my very eyes. The wolfsbane was spreading like bindweed entrapping his blood supply and weakening his body.
“Evelyn, what’s happened?” Noah’s panic ridden voice enters my mind.
“We’ve got Rex…he needs to be checked over but he’s okay.” I sigh out in relief as Noah responds in my mind.
“Thank the goddess! Are you injured?”
“Not me….” I hesitate, taking a deep breath in.
“Evelyn?”
“Reuben got shot. Don’t raise the alarm just yet, I don’t want his pack members to panic. Let Vicky know.” She was his chosen and should be there for when he comes back. He will need her. “Evelyn, a bullet wound wouldn’t…”
“It’s was laced with poison…wolfsbane Noah. I need you to be there, I need you to check that he’ll be okay?” I was asking too much of him, but he was the only one a trusted. He was the best doctor I knew and the Silver Moon pack had him to thank for his skills in the field.
“Of course, I’ll get a room prepared with his best doctors and staff.”
Noah was waiting for us as Donnie sped through the pack gates and towards the medical centre. I didn’t think I’d ever feel relieved to see the royal emblem ever again or the pack gates.
I was desperate to get Rex seen to and I think Noah could feel my worry through the pack link.
The car had hardly stopped before Noah opened the back door to check on Rex’s status.
“Rex…you had us worried.” He pulls him from out of my arms and embraces him high in his arm.
“Let’s get you checked over.” He waits until I am out of the car and walks us to the hospital. Rex looks behind, his mind wondering as mine is…where was Reuben?
“Is Reuben here?” His croaky voice asks, he hadn’t drunk enough. He needed some fluids.
“Not yet, we are ready for when he is.” Noah pushes open the medical centre doors and directs us to a spare room.
“Let’s concentrate on you first.” He places Rex on the bed before searching through the medical cabinet for instruments.
“What happened?” Noah’s calming voice enters my mind as he is busy searching through the cabinet.
“They were holding him in a human pub. It happened so quick. Reuben took down their guards, then he and Nate moved in on the pub. He go Rex out then we were shot at but….” I cut myself off, the memory of Reuben knocking me to the ground and lying on top of me entered my mind. His lips were just by my inner neck as he hurled himself in front of the bullet.
Tingles erupted on my neck from his touch, his lips touching my skin.
But why? I had knocked Rex away by then, surely he didn’t do it to protect me. Why would he?
I could barely breathe, the impact of hitting the graveyard ground winded me as his muscular body landed on top of me at an odd angle. I knew I was bruised, I could feel my ribs were sore but it is nothing compared to having Rex safe back in my arms.
“But?” Noah searches my eyes as he has turned to me, with me having stopped mind-linking him.
“Reuben knocked Mum out of the way from a bullet. I’ve never seen anyone move that fast.” Rex announces to Noah, a boy impressed with the Alpha King’s speed and strength.
Noah remains calm as he pushes his gold rimmed glasses up his nose slightly.
“Well then, we must give thanks to the Alpha King for keeping Mum safe.” Noah smiles at Rex as he starts to give him the once over.
“Let’s get you checked out shall we, I imagine you are hungry. But I think Elspeth is desperate to see you.” Noah continues as he checks Rex’s eyes for any signs of concussion.
An hour has passed and I was starting to become increasingly more concerned for the whereabouts of Reuben, Nate and Pierce.
Noah had put Rex on a hydration drip just to be safe before we took him to see Elspeth. He was tired, he needed sleep, which I would demand that he has once, he has seen his sister.
I hear a scream coming from the front of the medical centre before a gurney is rushed down the corridor outside our room.
On the gurney was Reuben, with Nate running next to him and a screaming Vicky trying to keep up in her high heels. Hospital staff and Doctors frantically rush around Reuben and it’s brings a new fear into me that he has gotten worse since I last saw him.
I take a step forward towards the door only to stop myself.
Vicky, he has Vicky.
Mr cool as cucumber slowly walks behind the commotion, before stopping when he sees me.
“Hey champ, how are feeling?” He
leans against the doorframe, as he
checks on Rex.
“Fine. Is he okay?” Rex asks Pierce as he moves his head to try and see into the room opposite us, where Reuben was being seen to.
“He’s fine. He always liked a bit of drama. Us Alphas are harder to get rid off.” He smirks playfully as he follows the last of the hospital staff into Reuben’s room.
“Did you want to go check on him? I can take Rex back to see Elspeth.” Noah notices that my eyes are trained on the room opposite. “No, he has Vicky.”
“You sure…”
“Yes! Is he done?” My voice takes on a cold tone to it, trying to hide the stupid jealousy I felt as Vicky stood by his side.
“I’ll take the drip out and then he can go. Food, drink and sleep though Rex, you need to rest.” He gives Rex a doctor’s command which Rex nods to.
We walk out of the room and my eyes snap when Reuben roars in pain as he pushes one of the doctors away from him.
I’m torn, between staying and commanding every person in that room to heal him, and walking away. Something I never thought would feel so unnatural, walking away from a monster. Because he was wasn’t he? A monster?
“Why don’t you take Rex to the alpha house and I’ll see what’s going on?” Noah offers, placing his hand on my shoulder to gently take me out of my thoughts.
“You would?” I’m taken aback by his offer.
“I’ll check on his status and what the doctors are going to do. I’ll only step in if I need to.” His words reassure me.
“Thank you Noah.” I place my hand to his cheek, he really was the best man I knew.
