Chapter 40 by Ebony Woods
Rex POV
The tall thin man was assigned to stand outside my room all day. I could hear him pacing the floor constantly which even for me, a four year old, was annoying.
I didn’t even know where we are, I don’t know Mum’s mobile phone number to call her…how was I going to escape and get away? Idiots!
By early afternoon, something had spooked them again and I really didn’t want to be moved. This place was horrible but at least it was slightly cosier than the metal hut…slightly.
The fat short werewolf had walked upstairs alarmed by the men on watch duty not answering their phones.
Apparently they had a system in place to speak to each other every hour, which meant they weren’t joint pack members because they couldn’t use a mind-link.
“I’m starving. Go see if there’s any food downstairs.” The fat man orders, letting his tummy control his life.
“I’m watching the boy, you go. Besides no one has been in here for years, you’ll be lucky if you find an old packet of peanuts.”
With a grunt the fat man walks down the stairs and leaves the thin tall wolf to remain at his post.
Minutes later a shriek is heard from downstairs and for the first time since 1 had been taken, I was actually becoming scared. If the fat man was scared…he wasn’t expecting something to happen which worried me.
The tall thin man opens the door to my room before stepping inside and looking around frantically for something to lock it with.
“Move back!” He orders at me and I do as he says, taking slow backward steps to furthest wall.
“Stay quiet!” He whispers, raising a finger to his mouth.
He pulls his mobile phone from out of his pocket and calls a number. When the caller doesn’t answer he leaves a message.
“Somethings wrong, send backup…” He cuts the call when one of the steps downstairs creaks under the weight of somebody.
The thin man starts to tremble slightly, as he pulls the gun out that had been in the back of his trousers for as long as I have known him. He checks that it is loaded with bullets and points it at the door.
I take a deep breath in, like Mum does when she’s overwhelmed, as the door knob starts to turn. The door is slowly pushed open and at first it takes a moment for my eyes to focus due to the⚫ light coming from the pub landing. It was daylight and whoever this was, they had removed those thick curtains on the window in the landing. Did he know I was in here and didn’t have my wolf yet?
I had been kept only in dark places and travelled only at night, I hadn’t been used to lights for a few days.
As my eyes refocus a gigantic male who is the epitome of werewolf from the human comics I like to read, takes a step into the room. He was massive, his entire body took over the doorway. He had blonde hair, not like Mum or Elspeth, not white but a sandy blonde… like me. His muscles on his arms where the size of my head, how could anyone get that big? “Don’t come any closer The tall tam
male squeakily shouts out as he keeps the gun pointed at the new male entering the room.
“It’s over.” A growl leaves his chest. “Who are you?” The tall thin man asks.
“The Alpha King!” His roar shakes the wooden floorboards but it’s his aura that increases and becomes too much. The tall thin man stupidly points the gun at me, I knew they were stupid.
“Don’t come any closer or I’ll shoot him.
The Alpha King, I’ve heard of him, Miss Smith had told me stories of the Red Stone pack. As he steps more into the room I realise I’ve already met him.
He’s the man that wanted to speak with Mum back home. He has that red sports car that looked fun to drive. Why was he here? “I said don’t take…”.
It’s over in a split of a second and I’m in complete awe, I think, of what I have just witnessed.
Awe or in shock.
The Alpha King snaps the neck of the tall thin man in less than a second.
He was fast.
“You didn’t need to kill him.” I say before catching myself. I didn’t mean to sound rude but I don’t believe the man would have shot me, he was gentle …compared to the others.
“You sound like your mother!” He scoffs before taking a step towards me and crouching down to my eye level.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” Why was he worried about me, wasn’t Mum his rival? I wasn’t privy to much information so I found out what I could
from a little bit of spving around the Silver Moon pack. I knew the Alpha King had group packs, like we did, and Mum seemed keen to break that group link.
“I’m okay.” I give him a little smile.
“You’re very brave.” He says as he stands up and pats the top of my head. “I am?” For the Alpha King to say that,
it must be true.
“Oh yes, Elspeth has been telling me how she could feel your strength through your bond.”
“You’ve met Elspeth?”
“Yes she’s at my pack with My Dad… your Dad.
“You mean Uncle Noah?”
His eyebrows furrow but he seems to form a small smile on his face.
“Is Mum there too?” She would have been so worried about me. I wanted her to know I was safe.
“No, she’s outside actually.”
Another male soon enters the room who the Alpha King called Nate. He seemed keen to search the pub for evidence but I told them we only arrived last night and they wouldn’t have had time to store anything here.
“What’s your name?” I ask as we walk down the steps to the back door.
“Reuben.” He answers as he swerves me towards the back door that had now been kicked open judging by the splintered wood. He didn’t want me going in the front. Is that where the fat short man was?
I was walked around the front of the pub, across the road and towards a graveyard.
“Rex?” Her frantic voice sounded as she came running towards me.
“Oh my baby.” She picks me up in her arms and squeezes me too tight.
She places kisses all over my face, muttering words about never letting me go ever again. I think I was in trouble here. She’ll hold true to her word.
Donnie is with Mum and another male I didn’t know. But I could sense by his aura that he was also an alpha. His white teeth hurt my eyes a little after being in darkness.
“Mum I’m fine…” I try to push her off me as my cheeks start to blush.
“Your mum has had quite a fright Rex, let her give you some cuddles. We won’t tell anyone…” The alpha winks and I suppose I didn’t mind the attention really. I did miss her, and Elspeth, and was grateful to be back with her. What happened?” She asks Reuben, now putting me down but holding on to my hand.
“There were two men. The first is unconscious for questioning, the second is dead.”
“You didn’t need to kill him…” I repeat.
“He pointed a gun at you, trust me he was lucky his heart remained intact.” His anger apparent from the memory but he instantly calms as Mum places a hand in his arm.
“Thank you.” ”
“Don’t make a habit of it.” He replies arrogantly, which makes me smile. Uncle Noah never teases Mum, I liked this Alpha King.
“Did you want to head off back to the pack while Nate and I sort out things here…”
“We can wait.” Mum looks down at me and I nod, I wanted to wait for him.
“Very well.” He nods, a small smile appearing on his face, as if Mum’s words made him happy.
He walks away, heading towards the pub again to join Nate who is standing at the bus stop waiting for his Alpha.
Donnie walks towards the church with this new alpha, leaving Mum and I alone as everyone becomes a few metres away. That’s when I hear a slight snapping of a twig to the side of us.
“Watch out!” Nate yells from the bus stop as panic rushes through my system. I turn to see the cause of the shouting and find the short fat man has managed to sneak out of the pub and hide behind a gravestone.
He has a gun in his hand and he is pointing it directly at me and Mum. “No….” She screams as she pushes me out of the way leaving herself in the firing line.
“Mum…” .” I shout out as she pushes me away and I fall to the ground.
The gun is fired, my entire body is
frozen in fright.
No please not Mum.
He’s fast, faster than any wolf I’ve seen before. He knocks her to the ground, completely engulfing her body with his as the bullet hits him in the back. As he takes the bullet for her.
