Chapter 39 by Ebony Woods
Evelyn POV
Deep breath in, deep breath out. “Look at me that way all you want sweetheart, but him being alive puts Rex in even more danger.”
“Stop calling me sweetheart!” I growl. “Where are your men?” Pierce asks us both to cut the tension between Reuben and myself. Reuben pockets the phone, as the dead man’s body laid on the woodland floor.
“Donnie is waiting for my orders. They were set on the pub.” I answer, turning my back to Reuben, as he disrespectfully goes through the man’s pockets.
“Okay, let’s make our way over to them. Reuben… What are you doing?”
Pierce rolls his eyes at Reuben with a large sigh.
“Looking for clues, I’ve already got his phone. The caller didn’t want to talk, but that’s fine my men can hack the phone for information. They’re going to wish they never made that phone call.”
“The pub, Reuben, that’s our destination yes?” Pierce presses for a decision from the two of us and with a simple nod, Reuben agrees on our next step.
We kept to the shadows of the trees, making sure we weren’t seen, especially not the humans who would find our movement very strange.
“Donnie where are you?” I push on the mind-link between us and he answers quickly.
“Just behind the bus shelter, in the graveyard.” “They’re in the graveyard.” I whisper to Pierce who was in the front and Reuben to my rear.
We paused for a moment to reassess the situation. The graveyard offered a good level of hiding space due to the grave stones and overgrown bushes.
There was no movement outside of the pub and the windows were covered, meaning we couldn’t see in.
If Rex was older l’d be able to mind- link him, to let him know I was so close and that I wouldn’t be leaving without him.
I’m coming my darling, the Moon Goddess will offer you her protection until you are safe in my arms. Please moon goddess deliver my son safely back to me.
We make our way, very carefully,
towards the graveyard where we find
Donnie and Nate crouched down behind a part of the church that offers a good view of the pub ahead.
“How many inside?” Reuben crouches down in-between Nate and Donnie.
“We aren’t certain for definite but we think at least two.” Nate answers looking to Donnie who nods in agreement.
“Best way into the pub?” I ask, when all four males look at me. Their faces not hiding their hesitation.
“What?” I moan in a whisper.
“You can’t be serious?” Reuben growls at me. I was getting irritated with Reuben thinking he ran the show here.
“Deadly. I’m going in there.” I lift my chin up and widen my eyes at him.
“No you aren’t.”
“He’s s my son Reuben.” “Don’t give me that shit Evelyn. Are you trained like me? No. Can you kill like me? No. You are staying here.” He tries to command. I go to stand but he . pushes me down at my shoulders.
“Get your hands off me.” I all but roar, as much as I can in a whispered tone. He takes a deep breath in, as is trying to calm his frustration.
“You’re maternal need to get him out could get him killed and even yourself. I promise I’ll get him out safely and unscratched.” His hands are still on my shoulders but they aren’t firmly pushing me down now, they are just resting there.
His eyes are searching into mine, looking deeply into my soul. A plea to trust him, to trust him with our son’s life. My wolf fights me, telling me to trust him, to give him a chance.
“Just don’t kill anyone unnecessarily.” I sigh, letting him lead the mission.
“Nate, you go around the back! I’ll take the front.”
“I can help?” Pierce offers but is turned down by Reuben’s shaking head.
“I’m forever grateful for your help this far, but I need to be able to communicate with Nate through the mind-link so we can do this quickly. Any bit of a noise, then they’ll be spooked and might act out in fear.”
Reuben pov.
Evelyn makes a movement to follow me but I have to remind her that she isn’t coming. She could act out irresponsibly once we found Rex.
Goddess knows what kind of state he is in, where he is being held in the pub and if he is even conscious. I know it is hard for her, but she needs to stay back if we have a chance in getting him out alive.
There was also that feeling in my chest that kept coming back to me, what if she got hurt again.
“Ready?” I mind-link Nate as we set out through the graveyard, remaining covered by the gravestones and bushes.
“Once we reach the bus stop, we’ll have to act fast. It’s too open.” I order as we hide in the last covered spot before the openness of the road ahead.
“I understand Alpha.” Nate responds. He knew his orders and I knew my target, to get Rex back into the arms of his mother.
I give the signal to Nate for us to move. We were both fast, racing across the road without being seen.
Nate makes his way to the back of the pub where I head to the front entrance.
Keeping low, I push on the door to find it is locked from inside. Using my elbow I break the glass and reach inside to unlock the security locks.
As I push the door open and step inside, 1 step over the scattered glass covering the damp carpet that had a strong old beer and cigarette stench to it. This pub hasn’t been open in a very long time.
Whenever it closed, it must have been in a hurry. Spirit bottles still decorated the bar area and I’m surprised human kids haven’t broken in to help themselves to a free night out.
I creep on through the front bar area, making sure I remain low and quiet.
“Nate, you in?” I push on his mind through the pack-link.
“Just, had to climb through a small window. It stinks in here….” I cut his link when I hear movement coming down some stairs somewhere. A male walks behind the bar and grabs a bottle of vodka straight from the dispenser. He was short for a werewolf… and plump around the belly. He hadn’t. trained in a while and was no match for me.
“Hello!”
He shrieks from my greeting, and soon his panic deepens as I walk out from my dark hiding place so that he could see my full frame.
I stretch out my shoulders and crack my neck, it always seemed threatening when I did that.
“Who are you?” His quivering voice replies, if I could see him fully, I’d say he had wet himself.
“I’m the Alpha King..who are you?”
Nate slowly walks up behind the man, blocking off his escape back up stairs or out through the back. He turns to look behind him, to find my beta smirking, having cut off his escape route.
“He’s got a gun.” Nate’s voice enters my mind in an unnecessary warning.
This dick is a coward, he pulls a gun out from his lower back. A true werewolf male fights with the hands or paws that the Moon Goddess gave him.
“What are you doing?” I don’t even hold back my annoyance in him using a human method to get out of a tricky situation.
His hand is pointing the gun at me, at my chest. It won’t do any damage, it’s a bullet and I’m the fucking Alpha King.
I roar, unleashing my full aura on to him. His hand holding the gun, starts to tremble and I actually think he has now pissed himself.
“Are you going to shoot me?” I quirk an eyebrow at him before taking a few steps forward. The gun now touching my toned peck by my heart.
I wanted to rip his fucking heart out but Evelyn’s voice was ringing in my head… don’t kill him. What was she now some kind of newly found conscious sitting on my shoulder.
I don’t kill him, if anything just to shut her voice up that’s in my head. But I do take him out. One hit to his temple does the job and he falls to the floor, landing on old broken glass.
“You didn’t kill him, that’s unlike you?” Nate scoffs through the mind- link.
“Piss off, he’ll be answering questions when he’s awake again. Any one else?”
“No down here, but I’ll check the cellar.” He walks away and I watch him enter the cellar door.I step over the prick on the floor before taking the first step on the stairs.
I take another step and cringe
internally when the floorboard creeks under my weight. Fuck, our presence was already no longer a surprise, now my ascending up was heard. I need to act fast and decisive.
Whatever was upstairs, whatever state Rex was in. I had to keep emotions from out of situation in order to keep him safe. I continue my climb up the stairs, mentally preparing myself to get the job done.
