The Grey Girl, The Van Tassel Murders

Chapter Going for a ride.

Aaron walked by the old Harley and the brand new Ducati. Without knocking, he pushed open the door from the garage into the house. Alex sat on the couch, absently stroking Oliver as he watched an episode of “Scooby Doo.” Aaron was about to say something about irony when Chloe walked out of Alex’s room. “What were you doing in there?” he asked in a devious tone.

“What? Our room? I was getting ready to head out for a ride,” Chloe answered. She held out her hand. Her jacket and helmet flew to her.

“I will never get used to that.” Aaron sighed, shaking his head. His eyes popped open as his head snapped up. “When did you start sharing a room?”

“We’re changing the locks,” Alex replied, gathering his own jacket and helmet. “You would be amazed at what my wonderful witch can do.” He patted Aaron on the shoulder. “See you at Dad’s for dinner?”

“Um, yeah,” Aaron was still trying to catch up on what was going on. Oliver was rubbing against his ankle. “Don’t you think having a ghost cat is weird?”

“Hell no. No shedding, no vet bills, no litter box, and this guy is awesome.” Alex smiled as Oliver looked at him and meowed his affirmation.

“Lock up when you leave,” Chloe called, heading into the garage.

Alex hung back. “I bought the ring,” he whispered to his brother.

Aaron was watching the see-through cat rub on his leg, purring. “What? Oh right. Congratulations.”

“She hasn’t said yes yet.”

“When are you going to ask?” Aaron inquired as Chloe called for Alex.

“Soon. But not today. Don’t want to spoil your big surprise, whatever that is. New girlfriend maybe?” Alex faked a cough then laughed at the look on Aaron’s face. “See you tonight.”

Alone in the house, Aaron looked at the cat, who looked back. “This family is only getting weirder.”

Chloe’s bike hummed loudly next to Alex’s. She felt whole and happy. She knew he was going to ask her to marry him soon. She was both scared and excited by the idea. She wished her parents could have met him and could attend the wedding.

Alex interrupted her thoughts by pointing to a road they had never gone down before. It was a strange road, but they would explore it together.
