The Grey Girl, The Van Tassel Murders

Chapter GLOSSARY

dèan e slàn, Scottish Gaelic for “make whole.”

Fearcharia, Gaelic for “dear.”

Ealasaid, pronounced ee-AH-luh-sich, Underwood (Elizabeth, Liza) is a centuries-old witch from Scotland. She left the Highlands during the time of the Rough Wooing of the infant Queen Mary.

Her clan held a coven of witches who were known for their healing medicines and “white” magic. Their rival was a lowland coven who did not share the same beliefs. They disagreed about sharing their knowledge with the people. This eventually led to fighting between the covens. Mixed with the English Civil War and the Scottish uprisings, both covens found themselves decimated. Both sent emissaries to New England to try to recruit the American witches. This ended with the witch trials of the 1600s, but the fight between Liza and Constance continues to this day.
