I moved back home. With Rick suspended from duty, he took charge of all the household chores and looked after me meticulously.
Whenever his phone rang, he would report to me first thing.
Rick often said it felt like we were back to our early married days, but I simply smiled without a word.
Only I knew we could never go back. After a peaceful period, Rick became busy again. With time, it seemed as though the incident of the bone marrow replacement never happened. Public opinion gradually calmed down, and the hospital reinstated Rick in his position, as his stem cell experiment became their flagship project.

In the midst of this busyness, Rick began working long hours again.
Occasionally, I received taunting messages from Jenny: [I knew Rick would never ignore me.]
Accompanying the message was a picture of Rick sitting next to her, bowing his head. while having dinner.
[As long as it’s my child, Rick will love her unconditionally.]
Another picture showed Rick helping Mia with a puzzle.
I coldly shut off my phone.
Rick’s latest paper on stem cell regeneration made the headlines in the medical research institute’s column.
The largest medical school in Aromac City was preparing for a lecture and had invited Rick to attend.
Lately, Rick’s demeanor had returned to the way it was before Alex’s incident, full of vitality.
“Lisa, you’ll come to see my lecture, won’t you? If this lecture is successful, I will become a renowned figure in Aromac City.”
Watching Rick brimming with anticipation for the future, I scoffed in my heart.
I thought, “Rick, I sincerely hope you go to hell.”

What he didn’t know was that my father was the sponsor for this lecture.
On the day of the lecture, Rick stood in front of the mirror wearing the black suit I had specially tailored for him.

“Lisa, once today is over, my name will resonate throughout the medical community. You’ll always be by my side, won’t you?”
I stood behind him, gazing at his reflection in the mirror.
“Of course, I’ll be by your side.”
I thought, “I want to witness firsthand how you fall from grace and become a pariah.” As the lecture began, the host invited Rick to the stage amidst thunderous applause. Rick, with a beaming smile, walked up, a white camellia I had pinned to his lapel. Just as he was about to speak, his eyes met Jenny’s in the center of the audience, and a hint of panic appeared on his face.
Quickly regaining composure, Rick spoke confidently and eloquently.
As the lecture concluded, the audience erupted into applause. Rick basked in the praise and admiration of everyone present.
I rose slowly and watched Rick on stage, clapping his hands.
He glanced at Jenny, then turned and smiled, taking my hand and leading me onto the stage.
“This is my wife. I want to thank her for her unwavering support throughout.”
I took the microphone he offered, a cold smile on my face.
“Do you all remember the recent incident where the bone marrow transplant was replaced? I am Lisa Fisher, the mother of the late Alex.”
