Chapter Chapter twelve
"Damn it, Freya! You're a savage. I deeply regret convincing your father not to annul the marriage when he proposed. The goddess Selene has punished me by giving me a merciless companion who wants to end my existence if I neglect her." He grumbled as he looked at her with slanting eyes, "why do you want to kill yourself?" he howled through clenched teeth. It was the first time he'd faced a she-wolf with such a temperament.
Freya felt a lump in her throat as she saw Crono's gray eyes darken and the fury contract on his face. Fear overcame her at the thought that he was about to punish her, and she quickly made her way to the other end of the office, leaving the desk as a barrier between them. Her brow high and her gaze defiant, though inwardly she trembled with fear, she pondered. "I think I've done too much."
Crono took a step towards her, and in an attempt to defend herself, Freya warned him in a strained voice.
"Crono, stay away from me. If you hurt me, I swear the next time I'll kill you. Besides, it's your fault for slandering my father and me without foundation. But I'll prove you wrong." Although her words are full of defiance, Freya can't help but be afraid of meeting Crono's contracted gaze.
"Freya!" he roars, "I'm going to set things straight with you once and for all, but stop making more trouble for me than I already have. As you know, in our lands we're faced with lurking Orcs who could attack at any time, and I need to find a way to exterminate them."
"Speak now!" snapped Freya, her fury evident. She'd heard about the orcs, but hadn't paid much attention, her mind obsessed with revenge for the misfortunes she'd suffered in her former life.
Crono walked over to the desk, opened a drawer, took out a file and began leafing through it as Freya moved away from him, avoiding getting too close.
Crono handed some documents to Freya, who took them warily and began to examine them carefully.
"Here is the proof, signed by your father and bearing the original seal of your pack, that authorizes the Kelpies to enter our territory and wreak havoc. Our warriors have captured a Kelpie wolf. You can read his statement, in which he claims that the Sith pack supports them. He directly accuses your father of being responsible for allowing the former leader of the Kelpie wolves to enter our lands and cause the death of innocent people. I have not formally made the accusation against your father as I await further incriminating evidence. A letter and a report from a Kelpies wolf are not enough for the alphas to support my accusation."
"No, it's not possible. It's a trap against my father. It must be the work of that wretched Pyrrhus. He wants to destroy my father." Freya remembered the moment when Pyrrhus had confessed to her that he had always wanted her. She dropped onto the sofa, realizing the source of her and her family's unhappiness.
Seeing Freya turn pale, Crono approached her, concern evident on his face, and asked.
"What did you say? Why do you say it's Pyrrhus' fault? Do you know anything?"
"My father is the most loyal man to his region and his flock. You can't accuse someone without investigating first. I'm asking you, as alpha chief and protector of all the wolves in this region, to conduct a thorough investigation. The real culprit lies in the shadows". Freya couldn't point the finger at her uncle without evidence against him. All she had were her memories of the past, and she wasn't supposed to know him. Besides, she couldn't remember seeing him in the past, except for the moment before his death when he'd confessed to her what he knew about his mother and his obsession with her.
Crono, noticing Freya's frustration and sadness, wanted to take her in his arms, but held back. He didn't want to wake the beast again. He decided to find out who was really responsible for the Kelpies' entry on the night of Lea's death. "Very well, I'll leave it to Dionysos to investigate the matter, but I warn you, if your father is guilty, I'll have no mercy on him and as for you, you'll remain my companion whatever the circumstances. declared Crono, his gaze fixed on her, a sense of regret at seeing her stunned.
Freya took a deep breath. The letter clearly bore the seal and signature of her pack, but she couldn't understand how her father could have signed such a thing.
In her mind, she began searching among the wolves of her pack, trying to identify those who might be involved. It was then that he understood why Crono had acted suspiciously towards them.
"Crono, how long have you had these documents?" asked Freya, confused, searching her memory for something she might have forgotten.
"It's been over two years since we captured any Kelpies wolves, and a year ago, one of my warriors gave me this letter saying that your father had allowed the Kelpies into this region. I'm not making this up, but all the evidence points to your father," Crono replied firmly, confident in the proof in her hands.
Freya squinted and felt the urge to hit Crono again, to which she responded with a snarl.
"You're a fool, Crono. If my father were the culprit, he wouldn't send one of our men to deliver the evidence to you. Besides, a Kelpie's confession has no validity. We'd do better to concentrate on finding those in my pack who are supplying Pyrrhus with information." Freya widened her eyes, sensing she was talking a little more than necessary.
A thought crossed Crono's mind: "Does this have anything to do with Pyrrhus' desire for her to be his moon? If so, I won't allow it, she's my companion and I won't give her to anyone. He didn't understand why he felt a murderous impulse towards Pyrrhus and had this desire to protect her. He was surprised to hear his inner wolf say "She's ours, and no other wolf will have her". Crono froze as he heard Typhon say this. Both were mourning the loss of Lea and had sworn not to bond with another wolf, even if she was their predestined mate. When they discovered that Freya was the daughter of the man responsible for Leah's death, they vowed not to let her into their hearts.
