REVENGE OF THE BETRAYED WOLF

Chapter Chapter forty-four

Night was falling and Bastian, restless, was looking for a place to spend it. Near the waterfall, he took shelter among the rocks and oaks. He walked over to an old oak and, fixing his eyes on it, said. "Today, I need you to put me up. I'll rest for a few hours, then find a way to reach Isis. I need to talk to her.

"What brings you to me? Why are you here? This region is dangerous. If one of my orcs discovers you, he won't hesitate to attack you," Isis interjected. Ever since the orcs had arrived at the hideout, she had sensed her companion's presence. She watched him attentively from a distance for a long moment, until she decided to approach.

"I'm here for you," he stiffened, his legs trembling, and continued with a shrug: "Ever since I saw you, a feeling of unease has troubled my soul. In my head echoes only the question: are you the woman who comes to my tent on dark nights?" "Why do you think that? I don't know you. I helped you today in the battle for Freya. Pyrrhus was her enemy and I had to help finish her off." Her voice sounded calm, but Bastian felt the nerves in her vocal cords. He glared at her sharply. "Don't deceive me, Isis. I see the fear in your eyes. What are you afraid of? Why don't you tell me the truth? I'll ask you again: are you and this woman the same person?"

Isis felt a rumbling inside her, terror overwhelming her. Yura, her she-wolf, who rarely manifested herself, awoke and began to release pheromones, answering her companion's call.

Branco quickly captured the energy of a she-wolf, took control of Bastian's mind and, with his intense eyes, desperately tried to connect with Yura. When he realized it was his mate, Yura didn't hesitate to spread her pheromones throughout the environment; she, who had no frequent contact with her human part, only succeeded in activating what had long been dormant. In a fit of despair, Isis raised her hands and began throwing essences into the air.

Bastian, enveloped by the various sweet scents emanating from the place, felt his sanity slipping away. But in an instant, he realized she was using her power to confuse him.

"Please don't do this. It won't do any good. You're that woman, aren't you? Your attitude gives you away. You're my companion. That's why my soul is impatient. Your power as a witch won't be able to hide your reality."

Her breath short and her gaze sharp, she tried to reassure her she-wolf, but to no avail. Letting out an angry sigh, she shouted:

"Yes, I'm your mate, but I don't want to know it and be tied to a wolf. I just want to be free."

"Your wolf side doesn't want you to be free. You've always come to me on dark nights. You must face your destiny by my side. I'm here because I want to be with you. Besides, your eyes tell you that you're afraid, but of what?" Isis's eyelids twitched and, seemingly calm, she exclaimed:

"My family suffered for years for practicing black magic. They were all hunted and tortured. My mother was a good witch, but my father's family, learning that witch blood ran in her veins and that my father defended her, killed them both. Sometimes I wonder who the monsters really are: my mother, those orcs or those senseless killers. I killed my own brother, and that condemns me to a life far from wolves. As you've noticed, this is my refuge with the "monsters", as you call them, and a few desperate wolves who've been hunted by their pack, all for power. That's what defines the wolf race, the strongest survive".

Bastian kept his gaze fixed on her, he could read the anger, disappointment and sadness on her face. He just wanted to hug her, he had this immense need to be by her side, and it didn't matter to him where she came from.

"Isis, it's not for me to judge you. I don't care that you're a witch and descended from witches. I can only tell you that many a night, in solitude, I have waited for your presence in the tent to feel your warmth. Today, my being has been stirred to the point of abandoning Crono and following the orcs in search of you. You are a woman who has unconsciously sought me out because you need me as much as I need you. All I ask is that you don't take me away from you, because I'm not leaving. If I have to go to hell for you, I will."

"Don't say that, Bastian. I'm cursed for killing my brother. The orcs are the only ones who don't judge me for what I am" Tears began to slide desperately down his contracted cheeks.

"I don't understand your attitude. You've helped many wolves, including your friends. If you were a bad witch, you wouldn't have saved me and my warriors. Don't compare yourself to other witches," he approached her and lifted her chin, "There are cruel wolves who seek power, and there will always be evil in our land. I'll stand by you and protect you. He brushed his lips against hers. Isis bit her lower lip; he found the gesture so tempting that he took the opportunity to kiss her gently. She let herself be carried away, closed her eyes and relaxed her barriers, a translucent energy emanating from her being."

The three frightened wolves saw their necklaces break into pieces and scatter to the ground. The break symbolized the disappearance of the magic they possessed.

Freya took refuge in the bathroom of her children's bedroom and began calling for Isis. Seeing no answer, she calls for Apollo.

"Apollo, how kind of you to look after me, something's happened to Isis, my necklace has fallen to pieces on the floor. I'm distressed for her."

"His phone vibrated, and when he saw on the screen that it was Siena, he said, "Wait, let's make a video call because I feel the same thing has happened to Siena," he cut the call and reconnected.

"Guys, I don't know what happened, but the necklace Isis gave me broke into little pieces. Sienna is in shock.

"The same thing happened to Freya and me. Stay calm, I'm going to the shelter to find out what's going on with our friend," he said, scratching his head, worried about his friend. During the conversation he'd had with her, he'd noticed that she was affected by her companion, "Freya and Sienna, stay where you are and wait for news."

"It's all right, Apollo. Take care, I'm afraid something bad has happened to him," Freya said regretfully.

"He hangs up the video call, looks for the van keys, climbs aboard and speeds off.
