Chapter 5

Chapter Five

Upon hearing these words, Mason’s body stiffened. His reaction confirmed my suspicions.

He coughed and quickly explained, “Yesterday, Erica’s condition was extremely critical, she almost died on the operating table, so I couldn’t attend to you and the baby.”

His voice grew increasingly uncertain, “This is indeed my fault, Ulrica. Please rest well. I’ll go find the doctor and ask about the baby’s condition.”

Mason’s presence had become negligible. Over the past few days, he was constantly called away by phone calls.

His time caring for me barely amounted to two hours.

After two days of recuperation, instead of seeing Mason’s parents, I was visited by lan, whom I hadn’t seen in over a year. He arrived hurriedly, his shoes still muddy, clearly having traveled through the night.

“Thank you, my dear Rica.”

With just those simple words, I broke down in

tears.

Over the past two days, I had felt my emotions becoming increasingly unstable, crying at the slightest provocation.

Even the smallest, most trivial matters could make me collapse.

Now that lan was here, I no longer had to constantly worry about the tiny being in the incubator.

Raising a child alone is unimaginably hard.

“Rica, where is Mason?” lan, who had been here for a while without seeing Mason, couldn’t help but ask.

“Probably dead,” I replied expressionlessly, gazing at the withered leaves outside the

window.

lan is my stepfather.

As a posthumous child, I was born without a father, and it was my mother who raised me single–handedly.

The year I met Mason, I received the news that my mom and lan were getting married.

As her only daughter, I was happy she had found someone to share her life with. It was clear they genuinely loved each other.

But misfortune always seems to target those already suffering. Just as she started to enjoy a few days of happiness, my mother was diagnosed with late–stage stomach cancer.

Realizing her time was limited, she urged me to marry Mason, wanting to leave without regrets.

She passed away shortly after Mason and I got married.

By the time I rushed back to my hometown, she

had already passed away peacefully.

Only then did I understand why she and lan insisted on staying in our old home.

After her passing, I couldn’t bear to return home, fearing the painful memories..

Even during the holidays, I avoided going back.

That old house, now, was only inhabited by lan, who stayed there, holding on to the memories.
