Chapter Four
That night, I was gripped with fear, scarcely daring to close my eyes, terrified that upon waking, I would be greeted with the news of my
child’s demise.
By the next morning, as the light of day filled the room, my child’s breathing gradually
steadied.
Watching my little one sleep peacefully, I covered my face with my hands and wept uncontrollably.
Once I knew he could eat, I donned my coat and took the elevator to the hospital cafeteria to buy
lunch.

As soon as I appeared in the cafeteria, I could feel everyone’s eyes subtly turning towards me. My haggard appearance was truly pitiful.
“Dear, where’s your family? These foods lack nutrition. It’s best to drink chicken soup during your confinement,” advised the woman standing behind me in line.
“Mom,” interrupted a pregnant woman playing a game on her phone, likely sensing my discomfort.
After the older woman fell silent, the pregnant woman turned to me with an apologetic smile, “My mom just talks too much. She means well, don’t take it to heart.”
I shook my head and smiled faintly, saying nothing.

Watching the mother and daughter bicker reminded me of my own mother. How heartbroken she would be if she knew the
suffering I was enduring.
On my way back, I passed the nurses‘ station and overheard a conversation.
“Hey, the pregnant woman in room 801 is really pitiful. She has no one by her side, and her newborn is so weak, it can’t even drink milk. I’m
afraid it won’t…”
“Don’t say such things,” the head nurse quickly admonished her.
The young trainee nurse pouted and muttered, “But it’s true!”

I stood there in a daze for a long time. Only after they left did I finally move.
At two in the afternoon, Mason finally appeared, carrying a meal. The logo on the bag was from a restaurant we frequented.
“You must be starving! Once I knew you could eat, I drove all the way to get this and waited in line for a long time,” he said, as he unpacked the food.
Seeing his attempt to gain credit, I coldly interrupted him, “Have you seen the baby?”
Mason was momentarily speechless.
After several seconds, he smiled and said, “I’ll go see him after you eat.”

I pushed away the chopsticks he offered, “Take it away. I’ve already eaten. If I waited for you to bring me food, I’d starve to death.”
“Indeed, you probably can’t wait for me to die. Once I’m gone, you’ll have room for your beloved. But with her condition, does she
even have the energy to keep you company?” I sneered, my words cutting deep.
Mason’s face changed at the mention of Erica. He found my words irrational and irritably
loosened his tie.
“Ulrica, when did you become so
unreasonable?”
I picked up the fruit he brought and threw it at him, “Unreasonable? The knife wasn’t at your throat, so of course, you don’t feel the pain. Do

you even realize our child almost didn’t make it last night? I stayed up all night in the hallway, fearing the worst.”
“Tell me, what were you doing at that time?”
“Let me guess, probably comforting your beloved. Mason, whose husband are you?”
