Chapter 61 - Insertion
I noticed Jaun was a lot more scared of his surroundings. I had remembered that Jaun didn’t like to be in the rainforest. He was afraid of it but he was basically afraid of everything. I wondered if he knew he was to be the sacrificial lamb so the other guy could hide? Probably not. He had always been nine crayons shy of a box of ten. I was ready to take him out and he was moving slow. I peeked out and noticed him sitting under the tree in which Digger was in.
I watched as Digger moved down the tree head first, never making a sound. When he was right behind Juan he cut Juan’s throat and dropped down on the ground, stabbing him in the heart too. I nodded my head at Digger and pushed out of the ground slowly. I looked around and noticed Matheus wasn’t in the tree anymore. I signed to Digger. Digger told me he took the other guy out and was waiting on me to show him where I was at. I guess I hid a lot better than I thought.
Digger, Matheus, Dragon, and I met up and went over our plans. We needed to set the explosives up as fast as possible. I was going with Matheus and the rest of the team was going to cover our backs. I just wanted to get everything done and over with.
Matheus and I headed closer to the compound wall. We had to be careful, not knowing where Barbosa might have men waiting on us. I knew he wasn’t going to make it easy for us. But, we weren’t where he thought we would be. We were on the east side of the compound, the one side it was the easiest for them to patrol. Why would be on the easiest side to patrol you ask? Well, they will have more men on the side of the wall the hardest for them to patrol because they would assume we would go to the easiest place to get in. And, everyone knows what assume means.
We were almost to the wall when I heard a rack slide back quietly. It would have had to be almost non-existent for me not to hear it. I grabbed Matheus’s hand and pulled us down to the ground as the bullet came towards us. No, I didn’t hear the sound of the bullet when it released from the barrel, but I knew it would be. It was how they were taught by Antonio. It was an action ingrained in me. And, I was taught how to listen and feel my surroundings. Antonio taught me the timing of when the shot of Barbosa’s men would hit and I practiced until I could duck in my sleep. It was grueling and painful training.
“All clear,” Madrid told us.
We moved slowly and crawled to the wall, making sure it was hard to see us. When we got to the wall Matheus pulled out the explosives and lead line or electrical detonator. Everything had to be set perfectly. As I set the brick Matheus set the lead lines in them. We moved fast but cautiously. Once everything was set we crawled back, rolling out the lead line with us. We had to set off the charges and be far enough away so we didn’t get hurt by the explosion.
All the men but one man, Warrior, had moved together and met us in the safe zone.
“Everyone ready?” Matheus asked us. We all nodded, wanting to get this over with. Matheus hooked up the lead lines to a battery and we watched as the lead lines caught fire, moving at the explosives in a sparkly pattern. It looked like the sparklers kids got at the fourth of July.
We all ducked down and covered our heads. We knew Matheus would have made sure we were safe from the blast. But, we still didn’t know how many men would hurry to the wall and start shooting. We covered our sensitive ears and heard the blast. It sounded as if the whole compound came down. It was so loud our ears still rang. We slowly looked up, squinting our eyes to see how much of the wall came down. We were amazed by how much of the wall came down. It had taken out almost half of the eastern wall. We separated and went to each insertion point. We didn’t take the trees considering Barbosa had cut them back to keep out unwanted visitors - kind of like us.
I moved to the west side of wall with Matheus, pulling up the hoody part of the suit. It would protect my head from a shot or blade. I knew exactly where the men would come out. It was another thing ingrained into them. There were drills for every kind of emergency. I knew Barbosa would change up the plans a little. If he changed them a lot he would have forgotten them.
I watched as Matheus stuck a small mirror around the corner of the wall and looked around it. Not only could he see but it would blind anyone trying to shoot us. The only problem with the mirror placement was the fuckers would know exactly where we were at. I grabbed Matheus by the collar of his shirt, turning him around. I signed we needed to move locations by burrowing. He nodded his head, attaching the mirror to the wall in the same place as we were standing. We burrowed and slowly made our way to the other side of the wall. I knew he gave us a little time with the mirror but someone would shoot it, breaking the blinding light from the mirror. Shots rang out from the direction we were at before, someone shooting out the mirror. We made it to the other side of the wall and waited for some fucker to stick their head out around the wall. Warrior would take the shot, hiding where we were at.
I heard the other team members calling out their positions and their readiness. We had one other plan in our arsenal. A good strong plan. One the fuckers would never expect. I couldn’t wait. We were on a holding pattern until we heard...
