Chapter 59 - Spirits
I felt air displacement and I jumped into the lowest branch in the tree. I looked at the blade he threw at me as I faded into the leaves.
I didn’t move. I wanted him to get antsy and make the first move. It didn’t take him ten minutes until he moved. It was all I was waiting for. I leaned out from the leaves and threw my blade. His head was embedded into the tree by my blade as he slowly died. I ran over and grabbed my blade, cleaning it off on his shirt.
I moved slower this time until I caught the scent of my mate. He was pinned down to the ground, waiting on the fucker to kill him. Hell, no! I listened to the fucker bragging about killing him. Didn’t he know you kill your enemy quick or something bigger and worse could creep on up on you. He kept rambling and bragging until he felt my blade across his neck.
“Do you see the problem with your plans now? Cause I sure do. I was about to cut his throat when I heard the slide of the rack on a high powered rifle. I stood there with my blade still on the fuckers neck. As soon as I heard the slight click of the trigger being pulled, I ducked down and threw my blade. I didn’t have to worry about the man on Matheus anymore his own man shot him.
I leaned over and stuck my hand out, pulling Matheus to his feet. I walked over to the other sentry who was trying to stop the blood flow in his neck. Good luck with that, fucker. I grabbed my blade and stabbed him in the heart. I didn’t have time to mess with him, we had a rescue we needed to attend to.
I heard the all clear from everyone, adding my own all clear. Matheus and I ran in the trees to the meeting spot we talked about earlier. We kept running until we came up on the others. I waited for the last two to make it to us. I knew our next step was going to be hard. One of us would have to set the charges while the other covered their six. I knew I would be the one to cover Matheus six - which was fine with me.
“Okay, you and Matheus need to make your way over to the wall and let hell rain down on them. Stay clear of the jail we don’t need Claw hurt,” Madrid commanded us as I nodded my head.
“It’s go time, Matheus,” I whispered as he nodded and looked at his watch.
We left after we bumped knuckles with the men. We moved steady but slowly. Our heads were on a swivel making sure there were no surprises. We had almost made it to the wall when my body was tingling and not in a good way. I grabbed Matheus and ducked us down.
“We have a rifle aimed in our direction.” His eyes widened in surprise. “We need to make it to trees until I can flush him out.” Matheus nodded at me.
We crawled on the floor of the forest, making our way to the trees painfully slow. I let Madrid know what was going on and he was sending Dragon and Digger to us. We would need them.
We made it to the trees and climbed up into the foliage, fading into nothing.
The man who was on the ground was talking to the other men, giving away a lot of information on where they were. I listened and stuffed the information in my brain. It would help me take them out after I took out this shit-stain. I noticed he only looked in the trees, never on the ground. I signed to Matheus what my plans were and eased down from the tree, landing quietly on the forest floor. I burrowed under the dead foliage and dirt, waiting for the man to get close enough to me. I had a snake slither crawl over my back, making me want to reach out and slide my fingers over the scales.
"You still miss Spirits, don’t you?” Rawr asked me.
I closed my eyes on the memories of what happened to Spirits. ”Yeah, I miss him. Barbosa has a lot to answer for.” I couldn’t help the memories from flooding my brain. I thought Spirits had gotten loose. I was panicked because he was a present from my dad and it was the only thing I had from him. I was looking everywhere for him when I was called to dinner. I walked in the dining room and sat down. When the cook came in she gave me a pointed stare. At the time I didn’t realize it was an apology. When Barbosa took the lid of the meat my Spirits was laying on the platter dead and cooked. I started crying causing Barbosa to slap me. He told me I would eat the snake or I wouldn’t eat for a month. I knew I needed my strength but when I put a small bite in my mouth I gagged and ran from the room. I didn’t care if I didn’t eat for a month. I didn’t care if I had to watch Barbosa and his men eat every day. By the time the month was over I was skin and bones but I didn’t care. I survived.
“You okay, Selina?” Matheus asked me.
“Yes.”
I threw the memories out of mind and paid attention again. The man was almost on top of me when he stopped....
