Project Angel Book 1: Awakenings

Chapter Protect

Chapter 22

Enjeru

Waking up in the Medical Ward again is extremely annoying. But looking over to see Micah sleeping peacefully seem to make things slightly more bearable. He takes deep breaths causing his chest to rise and fall slowly. I try to think of why we’re here, but it’s all a blur. My head begins to hurts as I try to focus my thoughts. I stop trying to figure out what happened and just decide I’ll ask Micah later. The door handle begins to move and I sit up waiting for whoever to come in. Angelique pokes her head in and when she sees me she smiles.

“I’m glad to see you're awake it’s been a week since the ritual, but both have you have been out cold.”

“Ritual? What ritual what happened I’m so lost.” I ask confused.

“You really don’t remember? The festival you passing out. The sigil having to be redone. You don’t remember any of it?”

“No, I can’t remember anything. It’s all a blur. My sigil had to be redone?”

“Yes. it was the only way to save you. Micah performed the spell successfully, and you’ve both been here ever since.”

“So that’s what happened. I wonder why I can’t remember?”

“I didn’t want you to.”

“Micah!!!” We both scream in mutual happiness.

“You were in so much pain throughout the spell. I didn’t want you to have to relive that. So I put a block on that part of your memory.”

“Micah I’ve been through worst I could. . .”

“I don’t care I don’t want you to go through any more pain. I think you’ve had enough of that. I want as many of your memories to be as good as possible. So if I can stop you from suffering even a little I will.”

“Micah. . . .” I start but falter.

When was the last time my heart beat this fast? When was the last time anyone was this kind? When was the last time anyone truly cared for me?

“Enjeru what’s wrong you look kinda pale.”

I run out the room and down the hall. Then it’s out the front doors into the pouring rain. My breath hitches and I stop just outside the door. Why am I running? What am I running from?

“ENJERU!!!”

I don’t even turn around I just run. The cold pierces my skin my feet going numb after some time, but I can’t stop. My steps carry me into a graveyard the tombstones barely visible in the thick screen of rain. I don’t stop until there is a large tomb in front of me. The Angel’s engraved in the marble seem to mock me with their smiles.

“Why are you doing this?” I whisper.

“Why do you feel the need to torture me? Haven’t I lost enough? Why are you playing these games again?”

Tears flow down my face, but they mix with the rain that continues to soak me.

“Please tell me you won’t take him away too. Why him? Why a human when you know someday he’ll die? Please tell me that I’ve suffered enough please take these feelings. I don’t want to be broken hearted again. Just tell me the punishment is over. Please. . .”

Warm hands cover my eyes.

“Answer me...Mom......”

“Shhh sleep Enjeru.” A voice lulls.

“Sleep.... ”

Micah

Somehow I was pulled back inside. Sedated and forced to sleep while she’s out there alone, lost, and helpless. That look in her eyes the doll-like stare. The sadness the fear it was all present, but why? What did she see, what was she feeling, and why did she run? The door opens breaking my trance.

“Micah someone is here to see you,” Angelique says tightly.

The doctors unstrap me allowing me to get off the bed. I run to the front door knowing it has to do with Enjeru. When I step outside her brother stands there Enjeru in his arms. He walks towards me and I extend my arms to take her from him. When she’s safely back with me again I glare at him.

“What did you do?”

“The better question why can’t I do anything for her now? As much as it pains me she won’t leave you people so, for now, I’m giving up. But mark my words I will get my sister back eventually. Your lies can only spread so thin.”

Then he’s gone.

“Micah. . .”

“Enjeru!!!”

“Don’t take him, mom, he’s all I have. . . .don't take him too. . . .”

“Who’s him? She can’t be talking about me right?” I think.
