Chapter 38

A Year Later

The past twelve months have been a little hectic for me. If someone had shown me on screen how my life would turn out, I would have argued with them because I would have thought it was all lies but I guess I am living it now.

Sasha sold her shares of the company to James which he gladly bought. I couldn’t let them have the last laugh even though I made them believe that they did. It came off as strange when Musonda told me that he was interested in buying my shares. I had to go through his financial capability and did all the necessary due diligence and in the end, I settled that it was okay for me to sell them to him though I made him sign a Non-Disclosure Document and as it stands no one except the two of us have this information.

I bought a land back home, started building a house and a block of flats that I plan to rent out. On the other piece of land, we have started working on growing vegetables. Its funny how I had to use the same house help that I chased to help me manage everything and so far, things are progressing well.

I used the money that was in Pearl’s account to build a house for her Aunty. She deserves it because she was like a mother to her. She too vowed never to tell Sasha anything and I am praying for now it remains like that.

We decided to sell the house we were living in and bought something smaller. Sasha is against the idea of having visitors around so we had to buy a house with only two bedrooms. She feels it’s better to help relatives from afar unlike them coming to live with us. Honestly, I wouldn’t allow anyone to live with us because Sasha is a bad woman.

We have decided to host our friends in the new house. This team has been there for us and despite having different characters, I am grateful for each one of them. Gabriel and Zara walk towards where the braai stand has been set. I am talking to Zac whilst Musonda is seated on one of the pool chairs with a girl on his lap. She has been introduced as Cindy, the guys look like they are already familiar with her except I am meeting her for the first time. I know it’s not my business but I can’t help but wonder what happened to him and Celine. I see the look that Zara has on her face when she sees the two and I pretend like nothing is off.

‘You left me with him to come for a braai huh.’ Zara accuses looking at her brother who looks like he has had more than one beer from the way he is smiling.

‘I see the two of you are getting along pretty well.’ I say giving a bottle of miller to Gabriel.

‘Unfortunately we don’t have wine.’ I apologize looking at Zara.

‘She will have hunters gold.’ Gabriel responds.

‘The outing was a good idea, you even know what she drinks huh?’ Zac teases.

I don’t know what outing they had but I choose not to ask.

‘Give him water.’ Zara says pointing at her brother.

I hand her the hunters gold after opening the bottle.

‘Thank you.’

Musonda and Cindy come to join us. I must confess she is beautiful. If I didn’t know any better, I would say that he went ahead and picked someone that looks so much like Celine.

‘Hai.’ He says to Zara.

‘Hey Musonda.’ She responds trying to keep her cool though we can all see that she is fuming.

‘You must be Zara, Zac cant stop talking about you.’ Cindy says.

‘I am the twin.’ She responds with a smile.

‘Cindy.’ She says extending her hand.

‘Nice to meet you.’

‘I don’t think you mean that.’

‘So you know.’

‘Yeah he told me.’ She responds wrapping her hand around Musonda’s waist.

‘I see, at least we don’t have to pretend to like each other, no?’

‘No we don’t, but I hope you can look at me past being his girlfriend and just try to get to know me. You might be shocked.’

‘Or I might just stay loyal to my bestfriend.’

‘Yeah that.’

Cindy excuses herself.

‘Dude we waited for you at the fitting, Lona was fuming. And we all tried to call you but your line was going unanswered.’ I say looking at Gabriel. He and Lona are getting married in a few months and he chose us as the groomsmen. I would have said no but I figured that Gabriel’s day of reckoning is coming, for now I just need to be patient.

Gabriel is about to respond when we hear laughter coming our way and we all turn around. It looks like Cindy is not a stranger here because she is cozy with both Lona and Sasha.

‘What are you doing here?’ Lona asks once she spots Zara, her face suddenly becoming cold. I really don’t know what happened with these women but they seem to not like each other.

‘You need to accept that I will always be in your life Lona and for the sake of the relationship your husband to be has with my brother, I would suggest we start acting civil towards one another.’

She just rolls her eyes and walks over to Gabriel.

‘I was trying to call you, where were you?’

‘His phone died.’ Zac responds.

‘Yep, I am about to put it to charge right now.’ I lie.

Zara shakes her head and excuses herself. She knows that we are lying and can’t stand the lies.

I ask Lona what she is drinking since Sasha looks like she is not about to serve her friend. When she tells me, I carry one empty cooler box and walk into the house to get some more beers.

‘Aren’t you ashamed? All your friends are doing well for themselves and yet you are the only unemployed person here.’

‘Sasha you know I am trying to find employment, you know I am doing my best.’

‘Well your best is not good enough! You need to find something to do because I am tired of feeding you and sponsoring all these parties. I am exhausted!’ she yells before stomping out of the room.

‘Just a few more months.’ I say to myself.
