Chapter DEATH OF MR. AND MRS. MARTIN
A few hours later and there was still no sign of Mr. and Mrs. Martin. Adewale and Adetutu became worried as they kept trying Mr. and Mrs. Martin’s numbers which weren’t reachable again. People also began to worry if the celebrant is coming or not.
After waiting for another hour and it was getting late, Adewale and Adetutu plead with the people not to be angry and that they are sorry then they canceled the party and rushed home with uncle James to check on their parents. Upon getting home, there was no sign of Mr. and Mrs. Martin and Mr Martin’s car which means they left the house.
Adetutu said to uncle James ″am scared, uncle. What could be happening?″.
″Since they are not in the house, they definitely went somewhere. Maybe they went somewhere private to spend time alone as a couple″ said uncle James to Adetutu, to calm her.
″Are you sure about that? Why will they do that if a party was organized for them and is it possible for them not to tell us about them going out to somewhere private to spend time alone?″ said Adewale to uncle James.
″It may be possible. You may not agree if they told you guys, so they decided to keep it from you guys. You guys should calm down, am sure they are somewhere safe having fun″ said uncle James to Adewale and Adetutu.
″Okay. But it not like them, at least they should have given us a call″ said Adetutu (still worried).
″Don’t worry, Adetutu. They are safe I believe that and you should also. I will stay overnight to watch over you guys″ said uncle James to Adetutu.
Adewale and Adetutu spent time waiting for the call of their parents till they fall asleep.
NEXT DAY(MORNING)
Adewale and Adetutu were the first to wake up and checked their phones for missed calls or messages from their parents but nothing. Their parents neither call nor messaged then they try calling them again and their numbers still weren’t reachable, which made Adewale and Adetutu more worried.
Adewale and Adetutu woke uncle James up and they all take a shower and have a change of clothes. Uncle James was given Mr. Martin’s clothes to wear which looked good on him.
Adetutu, Adewale, and uncle James were all having breakfast in the dining room when a strange number called Adetutu’s phone. Adetutu stopped eating and picked up the call then a strange voice said over the phone ″Hello, I will like to speak with Miss Adetutu″.
″That will be me″ said Adetutu.
″Am Doctor Janet from the Good shepherd hospital″ said the strange voice.
″Okay. What can I do for you?″ Adetutu asked the doctor.
″I should have called you yesterday but I was only able to get your contact a few minutes ago″ said Doctor Janet.
″For what reason, may I ask?″ asked Adetutu.
″To inform you that your parents had an accident last night and have been admitted to our hospital″ said Doctor Janet.
Adetutu became shocked and sad by the news that she became dumbfounded and raised her phone down without hanging up. Doctor Janet later hang up after no response from Adetutu.
Adewale felt Adetutu’s sadness immediately and Adewale stopped eating then looked at Adetutu to see if she wasn’t alright.
″A, A, A″ Adewale called Adetutu thrice but there was no response from her because she was devasted and lost in thought of the news of her parents.
Adewale had to tap Adetutu to bring her back to her senses and asked her ″what is going on?″.
″We have to go now″ said Adetutu (anxious) to Adewale, as she stood up and that also got the attention of uncle James.
Uncle James and Adewale looked at Adetutu to see she was not okay. Adewale asked Adetutu ″What do you mean? Where to?″.
″Calm down Adetutu, you need to tell us what going on. Is it about the call you received just now?″ uncle James asked Adetutu.
″Mum and Dad had been admitted to a hospital. They had an accident last night″ Adetutu broke the news to uncle James and Adewale.
Hearing that Adewale and uncle James were also shocked and worried. Uncle James asked Adetutu ″how did you know about that?″.
″The call I just received now was from the hospital. We need to go now and don’t bother to ask I know the hospital″ said Adetutu and went in to get her car key in a hurry.
Uncle James couldn’t let Adewale or Adetutu drive because of the state they were in and took the wheel. On getting to the hospital, they went straight to the reception and were directed to Doctor Janet’s office by the receptionist.
Doctor Janet told Adewale, Adetutu and uncle James to be sited upon getting to her office. Uncle James and Adetutu sat down while Adewale stood because they were only two chairs for visitors.
Adetutu (nervous) asked Doctor Janet ″where are my parents?″.
″You are gonna have to calm down. Who are you people, please?″ Doctor Janet asked the three of them.
″My name is James, this is Adetutu and this is her elder brother Adewale″ said uncle James to Doctor Janet.
″Okay. I need you to calm down Adetutu″ said Doctor Janet to Adetutu.
″I will when I see my mum and dad″ said Adetutu (anxious) to Doctor Janet.
″You need to calm down and listen to me or else I won’t take you to them or tell you anything″ said Doctor Janet to Adetutu.
″Okay″ said Adetutu and calmed herself.
Doctor Janet said to the three of them ″Mr. and Mrs. Martin was hit by a truck driver unintentionally. The truck had a break failure and lost control of the truck and hit their car. When they were brought here we were able to recognize them as the famous Mr. and Mrs. Martin. We tried our possible best to save them and we were able to save Mr. Martin who is now in a coma, but we lost Mrs. Martin″.
Hearing this Adetutu felt like her whole world has just crumbled, Adewale didn’t even know if he heard the Doctor right while uncle James was sad.
Adetutu stood up as tears fell down her eyes. Adetutu said with bitterness to Doctor Janet ″Tell me this is not true. Tell me you are joking″.
“Am sorry miss Adetutu, she is gone″ said Doctor Janet to Adetutu.
Hearing the Doctor say that Adetutu started crying same as Adewale. Uncle James stood up and hugged Adetutu as cried and kept saying ″she is gone, she is gone. No no, this can’t be happening″.
After so much crying at the doctor’s office, Adetutu, Adewale, and uncle James were taken to the ward where Mr Martin was being treated. Adetutu sat beside her dad on the bed, while uncle James and Adewale stood.
Adetutu said to her dad ″why is this happening, Dad? Why now? Mum is gone and here you are between life and death. What do you want us to do without you guys? You can’t also leave us Dad you know that. I can’t afford to lose you too. I need you to come back to us, please″, and began to cry then placed her head on her dad’s belly.
″Please, Dad, come back″ said Adetutu as she cried.
Adewale seeing Adetutu crying also couldn’t control his tears except uncle James that know this was going to happen.
Mrs. Martin’s body was shown to them in the morgue, and that lead to another crying for Adewale and Adetutu.
Adewale and Adetutu decided not to bury Mrs. Martin’s body and keep it embalmed till Mr. Martin woke up.
Uncle James didn’t let Adewale and Adetutu go home and took them to his home. Uncle James also decided for Adewale and Adetutu that they will be living with him because their home will only bring more pain because of the lovely memories it holds if they continue living there. Adewale and Adetutu listened to Uncle James, get their clothes, and start to live with uncle James.
Adewale and Adetutu sat down together alone in the compound of uncle James’ house to talk. Adewale said to Adetutu ″I know all that is happening is hard to believe but we have no choice but to accept fate. I want you to also kill the sadness in you because I can feel it so we can move on and wait for Dad to wake up″.
″You are funny A, You forgot this feeling is vice versa. You are talking about my sadness, what about yours? I can feel you think you are guilty and you are blaming yourself for being the one that suggested that mum should have a big birthday party, and that if you hadn’t suggested that she won’t have to leave home that night and had an accident. And you want me to kill my sadness when your sadness is more heavier than mine″ said Adetutu to Adewale.
″Am sorry. I just want us to move on″ said Adewale.
″It’s not your fault that she died. It was destined to happen and I also want us to move on. To do that, kill your sadness and I will kill mine, so we can both move on and be happy while we wait for Dad″ said Adetutu.
″We will get through this and be whole again I promise″ said Adewale, and hugged Adetutu which she does back.
TWO MONTHS LATER
Adewale and Adetutu didn’t stop working, they make sure they continued their parents’ work so their father could be proud of them when he woke. But what they didn’t know was that their Dad was never going to live again, which only uncle James knew.
Adewale and Adetutu visited their father every day in the hospital. Adewale tells him about their day while Adetutu read a novel to him every time they visited.
One night, Adewale and Adetutu left the office late to visit their father at the hospital. Adewale parked at the parking lot, and they both came down from the car. Adetutu said to Adewale ″you go first, am starving I need to get some food″, as they come down from the car
″And you don’t think you should tell Dad first″ said Adewale to Adetutu.
″I think he will understand. Tell him I will be back in a jiffy″ said Adetutu with a smile, and left to get food.
Adewale enter Mr. Martin’s ward and sat down on a chair beside him. Adewale said to Mr. Martin ″how are you today, Dad, I guess you are good. Today was also a great day for me at the office and there is much to tell you about but before that. Our only girl said she will join us in some moment and again I have to do something on social media quickly so you are gonna have to wait″.
Adewale brought out his phone from his pocket and start pressing it. As Adewale was having fun with his phone suddenly, his phone fell from his hands and slide down under Mr. Martin’s bed.
″What the fuck″ said Adewale annoyed.
Adewale bent down and saw his phone was under the bed. Adewale stretched his hand to pick up his phone then he heard someone call his name silently.
Adewale raised his head slowly to see Mr. Martin awake. Adewale quickly stood up with a smile on his face and was surprised (happy).
Adetutu suddenly felt Adewale’s happiness at the food restaurant and wonder what could be making him happy.
Adewale said to Mr. Martin ″dad, you are awake″.
″Where is your sister?″ Mr. Martin (weakly) asked Adewale.
″She went to get some food, I need to go call the Doctor now″ said Adewale happily, and was about to move but Mr. Martin hold his hand.
Adewale stopped at looked at his father as he holds his hand. Mr. Martin said to Adewale ″no, no. You have got to listen to me. I need to say this before I run out of time″.
″Run out of time? What do you mean?″ asked Adewale.
″I don’t have much time. I was only given this chance to warn you″ said Mr Martin.
″What are you talking about? What warning? we can talk about that later let me get the Doctor first ″ said Adewale.
″Listen to me son there is no later. I will die so you and Adetutu will have to live with that″ said Mr Martin.
Adewale was shocked and terrified to hear that. Adewale (scared) said to his father ″No, no, don’t say that, Dad″.
″You coming into our family was among the happiest thing that has happened in our lives. You made me feel what it was like to have a son, a man like me, and I will be forever grateful for that. I want you to always take care of Adetutu, please. No matter what she did to you please don’t ever leave her or try to stop loving her and you must protect her always at all costs″ said Mr. Martin.
″I will always love and protect her you know that, and you will be there to witness that yourself″ said Adewale.
″Am sorry, son, I wish I would. You must be a man, son. You are now going to be the only family she has got″ said Mr. Martin.
″Don’t say that, you will be here with us″ said Adewale scared.
″Tell uncle James not to forget, and you listen to me. He is coming for Adetutu and you need to protect her″ said Mr. Martin.
″Who is coming for who?″ asked Adewale confused and scared.
″He is coming to take Adetutu from you, you must not let that happen″ said Mr. Martin.
“Who is coming for her, Dad?″ asked Adewale.
″Faw.....″ said Mr. Martin. Mr. Martin couldn’t finish his words and died.
