Chapter 23
Chapter 23: Fairy
When the lawyers working in the hall heard this, they couldn’t help but chuckle. They all remembered Serena’s previous eagerness to contact Mr. Humphery.
“Nina, don’t forget that you’re a lawyer. Taking pictures of others was a violation of privacy, especially if it’s Mr. Humphery,” Charlie suddenly reprimanded sternly, and it was clear to everyone that he was trying to help Serena out.
Nina was stunned. “I deleted it now. Lawyer Charlie Jordan is so serious. It was just a joke.”
The office instantly fell silent. Charlie, aside from Emma, was the mos qualified lawyer in the M&A team, and he was likely to become a partner. Although he was usually laid–back, when he became serious, he was imposing. Nina didn’t dare say another word.
Fortunately, everyone started to get busy because Emma, who was even more strict, came to work. She carried a laptop bag in one hand and a small suitcase in the other as if she was going on a business trip. As soon as she walked into the office, she ordered, “Put aside the work at hand, and let’s have a meeting in the conference room.”
Some of the colleagues in the M&A team were on business trips, so there were only a dozen or so people in the office. Emma was efficient and quickly went through everyone’s projects during the meeting. She helped the lawyers under her to clarify their thoughts on several
projects that encountered difficulties. Serena was very impressed by her ability to produce high–density and high–quality work in such a short time.
At the end of the meeting, Emma specially arranged Serena’s work, mainly responsible for collecting relevant information about Future Better Technology Company.
“I’ll be out of the country for about half a month. If you have any questions, you can ask Lawyer Charlie Jordan first or send me an email.”
“Okay, Emma.”
Emma had many projects in hand and was the legal advisor for several listed companies. She was almost always on business trips. It was unclear which project caused her to suddenly go abroad this time.
Charlie privately told Serena, “Emma has hit a hard bone this time. Penn is keeping a low profile, and so far hasn’t expressed any stance. Several law firms are fighting to win this project, causing quite a stir.”
“Their legal department also has his true transmission and keeps it secret. They don’t even want to reveal the bidding time, making everyone like headless flies.”
Serena asked, “Is there no other way? How did we win other projects before?”
“We have projects that will directly invite us to participate in bidding.
from most of the enterprise’s lawyer pools. Some of them are also customer referrals. However, Future Better Technology Company has only been in China for two years, and they don’t have a lawyer pool. In addition, their legal department is very strong, so the opportunities for external cooperation are very limited. This acquisition case has a very attractive target amount, and in addition to the top law offices in
China, there are also several well–known foreign law firms competing. If Emma can win this project, it will be another milestone in her carcer record.” Charlie patiently explained to Serena.
Although Serena had been intimate with Penn twice, she didn’t know him at all, so she didn’t dare to speak up to ask for opportunities again, lest she embarrass herself.
Charlie continued, “But don’t be too discouraged. After all, Emma is Emma. Do you know why she went out of her way to meet Eric, the technical director of Future Better Technology Company, in Boston?”
“Why?” asked Serena.
“Eric and designer Jane developed the concept product that Future Better Technology Company’s competitors stole. They are currently in a legal battle, and Emma is the lawyer representing them. The headquarters of Future Better Technology Company is overseas, and this time Emma is going abroad with Penn.”
Serena was shocked and couldn’t help but admire Emma’s tactics. This was a case of “indirectly saving the country.” Instead of directly talking about the acquisition project, she started with a small case. As long as she gained the trust of Eric and the legal team, she would have a chance to gain Penn’s trust.
When they heard about the theft of Future Better Technology Company’s concept product, they only treated it as news and forgot about it. But Emma found a breakthrough and went to Boston to help Eric with his robot competition and laid out everything.
“Follow Emma and learn well. As long as you learn 70%, you will have great potential for development in the future. Emma was right not to let you follow me and to personally guide you,” Charlie said earnestly.
“There is a lot of potential in you. You are resilient and meticulous in your work. In our line of work, professional knowledge is the key to opening doors, but long–term development depends on hard work, attention to detail, and a sense of responsibility. These words are simple, but few can truly achieve them.”
The sudden praise left Serena at a loss and she could only nod and humbly said, “Mr. Jordan, I will work hard.”
“Do you know why Emma chose you from a group of people who are better than you during the interview?” Charlie asked.
Serena shook her head. This was a question she had always been curious about. After the interview, she thought she was unlikely to be
hired.
“One, because of your outstanding appearance, two, during the interview, you were very calm, not talkative, but every sentence hit the mark, three, your resume is very concise and even perfect, whether it’s the layout, format, font, or even punctuation, there is not a single mistake. Our daily work involves writing reports for clients, so this is
crucial.”
That’s why.
Thanks to Charlie’s words, Serena, who had been lacking confidence in the law firm, regained some confidence.
“Mr. Jordan, thank you so much.” She sincerely thanked Charlie, who had been taking care of her for half a year at the Justice Law Office.
“How can I help you?”
“Let me treat you to a meal. When would you be available?”
“No need to pick a date. Let’s go for lunch at Dream Tea Restaurant across the street.” Charlie happily decided on the time without asking Serena if she was available.
In fact, Serena had already made plans to have lunch with Blair at the same Dream Tea Restaurant. So she had to apologise to Blair for breaking the plan, as she thought friends were for bullying each other.
But when Blair heard that she was having lunch with a male colleague, she became interested.
“Why don’t we eat together? No need to make a fuss. You don’t have to tell him. I’ll just show up later.”
Speechless, Serena had to go along with her, as refusal would not
work.
As soon as they entered the Dream Tea Restaurant, they “accidentally” ran into Blair. Blair was dressed in a well–tailored little suit, matched with a low–cut black camisole, arousing people’s imagination but also not allowing them to probe further, only making them itch to take another look. Her wavy long hair was casually scattered, and the tips were dyed a faint blue, exuding charm from every gesture and expression.
“What a fairy!” Serena gave her an eye evaluation.
Blair pretended to be surprised and exclaimed, “What a coincidence! We ran into each other during lunch break. Would you mind sharing a table?”
“I don’t mind,” Serena gritted her teeth and said, then pulled her to sit next to her.
