Love conquers all

Chapter 23. Proposals

“Myra, when I first saw you I thought: ‘this girl is taking my breath away!’ ‘What’s so special about this girl?’

I have always felt your soul pulling me to it, even before I heard your voice. Remember when you were falling in the corridor that I caught you on the fly? At that moment I realized that this was your place: in my arms. When I saved you from anaphylactic shock I saw your frailty and promised myself that I would protect you at any cost. I made the same promise to your brother: I would guard, love and sustain his greater treasure: his little sister Myra.

When I kissed you for the first time, I said to you: ‘I want you to be mine, because I feel I can only live near you!’

I asked you to be my girlfriend for a month, at least until we found out we were Mate, but now I want to ask you something else.”

The silence in the room was heavy, Nathan remained for a few moments to admire my eyes and my indomitable heart melted.

He knelt in front of me and pulled a red velvet box out of his pocket. I put a hand over my mouth in surprise, my mother followed suit, and Silvia had a radiant smile with her fingers intertwined under her chin.

When he opened it he showed me a diamond solitaire, gorgeous and he asked me: “Myra, will you marry me?” At that moment the whole world ceased to exist. Before me, the man of my life, his question echoed like a melody in my mind. My heart throbbed with love and my eyes were veiled with tears of joy that were about to fall. I looked at my parents, my father and my mother, to my surprise they nodded, I never expected it from them. Even if they hadn’t given me their assent, my answer wouldn’t have changed anyway, but knowing that I would be supported by my family, in my choice, was an added boost.

“Yes, I will”; I said in an excited and confident voice; with such a big smile, that when I stopped, I would have all my sore smile muscles left for a week at least!

He put the ring on my finger, stood up and squeezed me tightly in his arms. When he freed me from his embrace he looked at me and kissed me. It had always been difficult for me to express or talk about my feelings in front of my family, but at that moment, they had all disappeared from the face of the earth. In my mind and in my heart there was one and only the “Beautiful and damned”.

The next day, Nathan and I were walking down the school corridor to reach my locker, shortly before reaching it I heard someone calling me.

“Myra.” It was Abby’s shrill voice, I turned and saw that Andrea and Aurora were there too.

“Hi girls!”

“Nathan, Myra, do you have something to say?” Andrea asked, addressing the question to me. On her face she had the expression of someone who had known something and she wanted me to spit the toad.

“Who is there now instead of Val passing the information to you!?”

Andrea chuckled before replying: “Your mother. Excuse me again for yesterday afternoon”; she apologized in a sorry voice, but she had nothing to apologize to me for.

“Andrea, you don’t have to apologize, I understand your motivations, but now we have clarified and ...“, I showed the engagement ring and their reactions began.

“I knew it!” Abby screamed, hugging me, while Aurora took my hand to admire the ring with her dreamy eyes. Andrea, on the other hand, patted Nathan on the shoulder and said: “Great move, Alpha!”

“Have you already thought about when to get married?” Aurora asked curiously.

“There was no time!”

“I could marry her tomorrow!” Nathan said and the girls looked at him badly, especially Abby.

“I hope you’re joking?!” Abby said with a killer look.

“Why should I joke about such a thing! Is there anything wrong with wanting Myra to be my bride right away?!”

“I understand your male point of view, but you have to understand that for us women there are many things to prepare. Marriage is one of those things that should be done only once in a lifetime! Even if very often it is not so ...” Aurora said.

“We can talk about this at another time, we are occupying the corridor, there are too many people for this speech and we have to go to class.”

“As you like Myra, see you guys for lunch, have a nice day!” Abby waved goodbye; Andrea and Aurora did the same, while Nathan and I went to my locker.

I had no escape at lunch!

“I’ve written a list of very important things for a wedding!” Abby said as she pulled a slip of paper out of her purse with a pen.

“When did you write the list?” I asked and immediately after Andrea added, guessing: “She is sitting in the back, she surely has pretended to take notes.”

“To tell the truth it was a substitute hour, so I committed the time constructively.” Abby pointed out, holding the pen.

“So what does point number one say?” Aurora asked curious to listen to her.

“The first point is the location of the ceremony and the reception.”

“This is simple, you talk to your mother and she organizes everything for you!” Andrea told me she loved the parties organized by my mother.

“I write that point number one will be dealt by Luna Giusy. Ok point number two: the witnesses.”

“For me Andrea ...” I pretended to think of other names and then added, without delay, because from Abby was starting to come out smoke from the nostrils: “Aurora and Abby of course!”

“My best man will be: Walter.”

“Good choice!” Aurora exclaimed as Abby wrote.

“Point three: Rings.”

“We’ll go to the jeweler today where I bought your solitaire.”

“Fourth point: the clothes.”

“Why don’t you ask your parents if they give you their clothes, you could save time.” Aurora proposed.

“That doesn’t sound like a bad idea, thanks Aury.” She winked at me in response and Abby kept ticking, until we ran out of all the points of Abby list and also lunch time available to us.

The school day was finally over and I went home with Nathan hand in hand.

“I’ll go and speak to my mother right away about the wedding ceremony and reception.”

“Remember to specify the date: in three days!” I smiled at him and kissed him unexpectedly.

“I can’t wait!” I said as soon as I parted from the kiss, in the meantime someone cleared his throat behind me.

“Nathan, I wanted to ask if you have five minutes to dedicate to me, I would like to talk to you about something.”

“Yes Alpha, I also have ten, what is it about?”

“Let’s go to my study.”

“I’ll let you talk, I’m going to see my mother.” I said letting go of Nathan’s hand and watched him go away with my father.

My mother was sitting in the kitchen writing the week’s menu. I told her about the wedding and she joyfully confirmed that she would take care of everything.

“As for the wedding dress, how about we go to the atelier ...”

“Actually, I thought I’d like to wear your wedding dress!” My mother might not have expected such a thing, because her eyes filled with tears.

“I never would have proposed it to you, but if that’s what you want, of course you can wear it, my little one.” She hugged me tightly in her arms and after a while we heard my father behind us walking into the kitchen followed by Nathan.

“I hope the tears on my Mate’s face are of joy!”

“Definitely of joy, Alpha!” My mother replied, wiping her eyes.

“What did you two talk about? If it’s fair to ask!” I asked my father in an inquisitive tone as I approached Nathan and put my arm around his waist.

“I asked him if he was interested in the role of Alpha, since our Val is gone and he will marry you ...”

“What did you answer?” I asked him looking into his eyes.

“On the night of the rogue attack, while you were unconscious, I managed to kill the rogue, but not before Val had been stabbed with a silver blade and wolfsbane. Before he died he made me promise to take care of all of you, to take his place as Alpha and above all to never leave you alone, her beautiful and precious little sister Myra. So my answer was quite simple: I accept the role of Alpha.”

“How are you going to do it with school? Will you have time for both?” I asked worriedly.

“We have already thought about this, so we have established that he will attend the meetings and the management of the work as an apprentice, until the end of the school.”

“So we will celebrate the wedding, and announce the future Alpha of the pack!” My mother said with a beaming smile.

For some three days were an eternity, for others they were a walk, for me they were days full of so much work, so many emotions, so much love. If on the one hand I wanted them to pass quickly to release the tension, on the other hand I wanted them to last as long as possible, to enjoy the emotions that would never return.
