I stomped my foot in frustration, realizing it was too late now. Once the power

was restored, the hallway cameras would be functional again, and I would be

exposed.

Frantically, I returned everything to its original state and locked the drawer.

After double–checking the desk, I hurriedly placed the keys back in the

hidden compartment of the statue. With swift steps, I dashed out of the

study, sprinting back to the master bedroom.

My heart pounded, and fear lodged in my throat. Just as I was about to climb

into bed, I remembered that the surveillance camera was still submerged in

water.

In a rush, I entered the bathroom and retrieved the camera from the water.

After shaking it a few times, I dried it with a towel and carefully placed it back

in its spot. I hoped the camera would remain non–functional and rendered

useless after being submerged in water.

Then, I returned the chair to its place in front of the vanity. I collapsed onto

the bed, utterly exhausted, and gasped for breath like a fish on the brink of

death.

At that moment, a wave of sadness washed over me as I stared wide–eyed

at the dim surroundings. Overwhelmed by despair and helplessness, I could

no longer maintain the charade and began sobbing uncontrollably.

While crying, I strained my ears to listen for any sounds outside, fearing they

might return and catch me in my pitiful state, weeping inconsolably.

The next day, hunger woke me early as I had skipped dinner the night before.

Also, Tania had yet to provide me with any medication.

Surprisingly, I had a restful night’s sleep. Perhaps it was because I had cried

myself to sleep the night before, or maybe it was the sense of certainty that I

had contacted Hailey.

When Tania came to give me my medicine, I confronted her. “Did I skip dinner

last night? Why am I so hungry?”

She smiled and replied with a hint of seriousness, “You didn’t eat much last

night. You mentioned feeling too full from lunch and couldn’t eat more.”

I choked at her words, clenched my fists in anger, and silently cursed her,

hoping she would face the consequences one day.

“Leave it there. I’ll need to go to the bathroom. Also, could you bring me a

glass of milk? 1 instructed calmly, then lifted the blanket and left the bed for

the bathroom.

When I heard her footsteps leaving. I hurriedly grabbed a towel, dampened it,

and wrung it dry. Then, I went outside to pour the medicine into it. To be on

the safe side, I still pretended to go through the motions of drinking the

medicine.

Back in the bathroom, I swiftly cleaned the towel. Then, I recalled that I

needed to save some medicine for Hailey to analyze the content.

As I finished washing the towel and returned to the bed, Tania returned with a

glass of milk. At the same time, she casually glanced at the medicine bowl.

I took the milk, took a sip, and asked casually, “Where’s Kevin?”

“He’s gone out,” she replied. Then, she scolded Ria, saying, “Ria, why do you

always insist on climbing everywhere? You’re getting naughtier by the day!

Come down this instant!”

I looked up and noticed that the cat had somehow scaled to the top of a

cabinet, looking down at Tania with a smug expression.

My eyebrows twitched, and I couldn’t help but feel a surge of delight. This cat

was my lucky charm, like a guardian sent from above.

Tania shot the cat an exasperated look, muttering as she headed out with

two empty bowls. She continued speaking as she walked away. “Breakfast

will be ready soon.”

I couldn’t be certain, but her demeanor today seemed oddly conceited,

almost as if she were intentionally provoking me.

After she left, I beckoned Ria over and climbed out of bed. Slowly, I strolled

over to the display cabinet, seemingly conversing with the cat and coaxing it

to come down. At the same time, I picked up a book and tossed it upward,

not toward the cat but at the surveillance camera’s location. The book hit the

ground with a loud thud, startling the cat and causing it to jump from the

cabinet in fear.

With a hearty smile, I reached out to embrace and pet Ria, even giving it a

kiss. Inwardly, I was ecstatic, silently applauding the cat for its help, and

thought, “Well done, my dear Ria! You truly are my divine helper.” However, I

said aloud, “No more climbing up there next time.”

Now, I was confident that this room was secure.

.ater, I had breakfast absentmindedly, being careful not to eat too much to

avoid arousing suspicion.

As noon approached, I eagerly awaited Hailey’s arrival. However, I waited the

entire day, and she never showed up.
