Chapter 12
Chapter 12
Hope filled my heart, but it was tinged with suspense as I wondered why
Hailey hadn’t shown up yet. Perhaps she didn’t fully understand what I had
explained over the phone yesterday. My mind was preoccupied with possible
reasons for her delay.
Unease grew within me, and I even entertained the thought that Kevin might
have bribed Hailey. After all, I had helped foster a good relationship between
them, and I hadn’t seen him all day.
Throughout the night, I tossed and turned, questioning who I could trust if I
couldn’t rely on Hailey. The more I dwelled on it, the more helpless I felt,
staring at the ceiling until dawn.
Just as I was starting to drift off to sleep, a commotion outside jolted me

awake. It sounded like there were people in the house. Suddenly, hope
surged within me. Could it be Hailey?
I strained to listen, hearing men’s voices downstairs. It seemed like there was
more than one person. Their voices were intermittently loud downstairs for a
while, and then they started making their way upstairs, still chatting as they
approached, but I couldn’t make out their words..
Suddenly, my door swung open, and I jumped, quickly sitting up.
I
Tania entered, accompanied by a man in work attire carrying a toolbox. They
had been chatting as they entered, but their voices fell silent when they saw
- me. The worker’s expression registered surprise, not expecting to find anyone
in the room or perhaps taken aback by my appearance.
Tània quickly explained, “Mrs. Diaz isn’t feeling well, so it’s best not to disturb

her. Do you really need to perform the inspection?”
The man diverted his gaze and nodded firmly, saying, “Yes, we must inspect
everything.” He then stepped back and exited the room.
I asked Tania, “What’s happening? Who were they?”
She glanced at me and replied calmly, “The property maintenance team is
here to fix the electrical circuits. You can go back to rest.”
With a resigned “Oh,” I reclined on the bed and sighed. That’s right, the power
had gone out yesterday, so repairs were definitely necessary.

Meanwhile, Tania escorted the men to the door, saying, “Please be cautious
and avoid touching anything. Why is this inspection so bothersome? Besides,
the electrical issue isn’t originating from our house.”

I overheard one of the men explaining, “We need to inspect each room to
check for aging wires and improper connections, ensuring there are no
potential safety hazards. Don’t worry; it won’t take long.”
Suddenly, Felix’s cries echoed from downstairs. Tania urgently instructed the
worker, “Hurry, but be cautious not to touch anything there! Ugh… That’s the
study; just take a quick look. I’ll be downstairs. Please hurry.”
Then, I heard her rushing downstairs. It was evident that she cared deeply for
Felix.
At that moment, my door was forcefully pushed open again, startling me. I
turned toward the door and recognized the same worker from earlier.
He rushed toward my bed, causing me to jump in alarm. I was on the verge
of screaming when he urgently whispered, “Shh! Stay quiet.”

He quickly opened his toolbox and handed me a phone, whispering, “This is
from Hailey.” Then, he swiftly left the room.
I watched in disbelief as he walked away, clutching the phone tightly and
hiding it under the blanket. My eyes remained fixed on the door, anxiety still
gripping me as I tried to recover from the shock. But beneath the fear, a
glimmer of hope emerged. Hailey. He’s here on Hailey’s behalf! At that
moment, I was ecstatic and on the verge of tears. Finally, someone is helping
- me. Finally, I can contact the outside world.
On the bed, I trembled, holding back tears, feeling a surge of inner strength.
With the phone in my possession, I felt like I had been given a shot of
adrenaline.
