Lies in My Marriage by Lane Abbott

Chapter 10

Chapter 10

I searched his pen holder for the keys, but found nothing. It seemed unlikely

that he would be carrying all the keys with him.

My attention turned to the safe in the corner, and I remembered the key to it.

I turned around and headed straight for the life–sized golden horse statue

near the door. I pressed a hidden decoration on the pedestal with force, and

it popped open. I quickly reached inside and felt a bunch of keys.

I paused for a moment. He hadn’t changed the hiding spot. At that moment,

a question crossed my mind. Who is he trying to protect the study from?

I was the one who had suggested this hiding place, and he had agreed

without hesitation. Only Kevin and I knew about it.

It seemed he believed I was too dazed and sleepy all day, so he didn’t think

of changing the location. But… who was he guarding it against?

I didn’t have time to dwell on it. I quickly grabbed the keys and rushed back to

the desk. Finally, I managed to unlock the drawer using the smallest key, and

it clicked open.

Sure enough, in the second drawer on the right side, I found my phone and

tablet. I quickly took them out. The phone was powered off, and I shakily

pressed the power button.

As I waited for it to turn on, I opened Kevin’s computer, hoping to check the

home surveillance footage. I raised my hand and typed in the password that

was familiar to me, but it showed ‘incorrect password“.

He had changed the password!

I tried several times, but it was all in vain. I couldn’t access his computer.

Dang it, that jerk. I angrily smacked his computer, and the sound startled

even me.

I picked up my phone, only to be repeatedly told that the password was

incorrect. He had even changed the code to my phone!

Luckily, when I bought this phone, I had set up fingerprint recognition. I used

my fingerprint to unlock it.

I checked the battery and saw that it was running low. In the call log, the

most recent call was from my mom. Instantly, tears welled up in my eyes.

I wanted so much to call her, but now was not the time. First, I knew my

emotions were unstable, and I couldn’t let her worry. Second, I was afraid the

battery might not last. My top priority was to contact Hailey.

Without much thought, I pressed Hailey’s contact from the numerous missed

calls. However, as soon as I clicked on it, I immediately pressed the end call

button. No, for safety’s sake, I couldn’t call her. It could easily lead to being

traced.

I quickly opened WhatsApp, and finding Hailey was effortless. She had sent

me numerous messages. I didn’t have time to read them all, so I just made a

voice call.

It rang for a long time before she picked up, and then I heard Hailey’s furious

voice. “Danielle, you finally remember me, huh? I thought you were at death’s

door. If you didn’t get in touch soon, I would be preparing a funeral wreath…”

I didn’t wait for her to finish scolding me. I quickly interrupted, “Hailey, listen to

me…”

As soon as the words left my mouth, I burst into sobs. “I–I need your help!”

“Danielle? What’s going on? Don’t cry! What’s wrong? Talk to me. Gosh, you’re

freaking me out!”

I took a deep breath, trying to calm my emotions. “Hailey, don’t ask questions

now. It’s a long story. I need you. I can’t explain over the phone, but just listen

to me…”

I rambled on, not even knowing what I was saying.

Hailey probably only caught snippets of it and cut in, sounding anxious.

“Danielle, did something happen?”

“Yes, something happened…”

At this point, I couldn’t keep my situation hidden any longer. I briefly explained

my current predicament and what I needed from her. The call abruptly

ended with a beep as the phone ran out of battery.

I sat in a daze for a moment, realizing there were still many things I hadn’t

explained clearly. I helplessly lowered my hand, placing the phone back

where it was. I couldn’t afford to alert Kevin and Tania before obtaining

evidence.

I had wanted to see what Kevin kept in the drawer that led him to lock the

study in the first place. But just then, the lights flickered. Soon after, they went

out again.
