Kill or Be Killed (#1 Eastern Werewolves Pack Series)

Chapter 10: Jaxon

He didn’t want to leave the bed yet but with the ongoing text messages from Seth about Hanson’s case, Jaxon had no choice but to leave the bed while Zia was sleeping there. Carefully, he freed his arms from her body and headed into the bathroom for a quick shower. By the time he had finished, she was still in the bed, sleeping safe and sound. Last night must be tiring for her. He caught her crying in her sleeping twice but didn’t do anything to wake her up. Instead, he just wrapped his arms around her and whispered any soothing words he could think of.

Before he left the bathroom, he wrote a short note and placed a few things she might need later on. Jaxon drove to his pack mansion and saw Vincent and Amanda were already there. He had called these two because Jaxon didn’t have any more ideas on how to control Lydia’s situation. Strong medication was out of the option because he didn’t want to endanger her baby.

“Thanks for coming in short notice,” he said to them.

Vincent came to him and gave him a short hug. “Any time, Alpha. We’d help with what we could.”

Jaxon nodded in understanding and turned to the white witch. Not all werewolves had a good history with witches but considering this one was working with the Luna of the Southern Werewolves Pack, Jaxon decided to believe in her too. He had seen Mira’s acquaintances and how she risked her life for these two people. If she could trust them, then Jaxon could trust them too.

“I remember you could do something about a broken mating bond,” he said earning a nod from Amanda. “Lydia is pregnant and we couldn’t control her with medication without endangering her baby too. I was hoping if you could do something to lessen her pain until she gives birth in a few weeks. I know it would be a long-term situation but we ran out of options.”

“How long is her pregnancy?” Amanda asked.

“32 weeks.”

She nodded and thought for a moment, “Okay, I can start now. The sooner we start, the better I can help her.”

“Seth will get you to the hospital. She’s there for a few days until the doctor says otherwise.”

She nodded again and followed Seth out of the pack mansion. Vincent joined Jaxon in the office. There were several new files on his desk that he didn’t have the chance to check on because of the current situation. Deep inside of him, Jaxon was hoping all of these were just nightmares. Losing Hanson was almost unbearable to him and his family. Seeing Hanson’s mate struggling to survive, that was a very painful thing to see. Lydia’s mind was no longer able to think straight because all she could think of was feeling the loss of her mate. Jaxon had run out of ideas how to ease her pain. Hopefully, Amanda had a shot to make the pain go away even just for a few minutes.

“Alpha Cohen and Mira would be coming to visit this afternoon,” the former second-in-command told him as they sat down.

Cohen and his mate, Mira, had been busy rebuilding the Council’s system with all four species working together. Honestly, Jaxon thought that it wouldn’t work at all considering everyone was at each other’s throat all the times but he was convinced otherwise. Mira had shown that she was capable of reuniting the species although her existence was the reason why wars happened between all four. Jaxon was one of the many packs that pledged their allegiance to her. Turned out, she had many allies behind her back all along.

He would have renounced his affiliation with the previous Council a lot sooner if he knew they were really corrupted and the reason why hundred of people enslaved and couldn’t be found. Now, he was more than happy to help Cohen and Mira tackling all the bad guys.

“She’s pregnant, Vincent. She didn’t have to make the long journey to here.” Jaxon muttered in concerns.

Vincent chuckled, “Try to say that to her and I’d bet you’d get in the same line as Alpha Cohen and I.”

“Women on these days are really stubborn, aren’t they?”

“You tell me about it. How are you doing, Alpha?”

Jaxon scratched his head as he sighed, “I don’t know, man. With this case, I just couldn’t wrap my head around anything.”

“I revised the case file before I came here. Seth filled me in with details. It sounded like hunters’ work.”

“Any names?”

He shook his head, “No, but Mira came across the same case before. Two shots, blood eagle execution style and all that. She tried to hunt them down for quite a long time.”

“Still couldn’t find them?”

“As far as she knows, they are humans. There are many bounty hunters. It could take days to look through all their killing patterns.”

“I don’t want to burden her with this case too. She has enough on her plate.”

“Trust me, Jaxon. You don’t get a say in this because she already looked into this case even before you told her not to.”

Jaxon slumped on his chair. He didn’t want to involve Mira in this, not when she already had gone through a lot and she was pregnant with the future heir of the Southern Werewolves Pack but at this moment, Jaxon needed every help he could get. He wanted to bring Hanson’s murderer to justice.

“I sent words to Grover,” the Alpha told the former second-in-command. “Did he mention anything?”

Vincent shook his head, “No, but he has ears and eyes everywhere. He should be arriving in your territory tonight to help. If you could spare a few minutes for him to check the body, it would be a great help.”

“I’ll send words to the coroner about it. Grover can check the body as long as he wants.”

They discussed a little bit more about Hanson’s case. Several trackers had informed him that they found where Hanson was killed before his body was moved to the workshop. Jaxon told them to secure the perimeter and that he’d be there as soon as he could. He had another important matter to attend at first. Zia was still at his house and he wanted to check up on her. He didn’t want her to be upset that he wasn’t there when she woke up later on.

Wrapping up all his work in the office, he left to check on Zia because seeing her face made him forgot all his problems even just for a few minutes. He needed that kind of distraction.
