Chapter 19

Asgeir POV

He didn't say anything after that and after a while I actually thought that he had left, but when I opened my eyes again, I saw him still sitting in the same place, looking at me.

"I'm Asgeir, by the way." I said with my eyes closed.

"My name is Aeldit"

"What does that mean?" I asked, not remembering if I had read it somewhere or not.

"It means one of fire."

"Makes sense." I chuckled and suddenly felt so sleepy, I couldn't even opened my eyes even if I wanted to.

"The root will make you sleep. When you wake, you'll be all healed."

I didn't bother to reply to him, because I had no energy to and instead allowed myself to drift off, hoping that I would at least dream of my family, because that's all I had left now.

My dreams.

I must have slept for a while because when I opened my eyes again, I could tell that it was morning by the slight rays that were coming through the few cracks in the stones, which meant that I had already been here a day.

I wondered what my family were doing now, whether they had left to search for me, or whether they had accepted me as dead already.

I gasped out of shock when I saw that Aeldit spread out in front of my cage, sleeping all curled up into a huge ball. I have no idea why, but I found myself smiling at that sight.

I know I should be angry at him, maybe even hate him, since he had taken me away from my family, but somehow, I couldn't bring myself to hate him, even if I tried.

And it wasn't because of the warmth I felt whenever I looked into his eyes, but it was the look of sadness that I saw in them.

He was driven by rage , hate and sorrow, because of all that had been done to him, and for some unknown reason, I found myself wanting to heal him of that, which might sound extremely stupid.

A human trying to heal a dragon.

I walked towards the bars of the cage and sat down there, looking at him while he slept. I suddenly had this urge to touch him, curious about what his dragon skin felt like.

I slowly put my hand through the bars and gently placed it on what I assumed was his cheek. I smiled when I felt his scales and slowly ran my hand upwards towards his cheeks bones and over his eyelids.

His skin felt warm and I just couldn't tear my hands away from it. I smiled as I ran my palm over his face and jerked when his eyes opened and looked straight at me, making me withdraw my palm so swiftly, as though I had touched something extremely hot.

He seemed to be a bit lost for a few seconds and growled as he bared his sharp teeth at me.

"Shh.. it's just me." I said and slowly showed him my palm, letting him know that I was not going to hurt him. I watched him look at my palm all the way until it settled back on his face.

I gently rubbed my hand across his face and smiled I heard him purr into my hand.

"Why does that feel so nice."

I found myself chuckling at that and shaking my head while I laughed.

"I have idea, no one had ever touched my face like this so I don't know what it feels like." I said smiling at him.

"Do you want me to do it for you too?"

I tilted my head and wondered if he understood what he was asking, and from the obliviousness in his eyes, I didn't think he did. After all, he was a dragon and probably wasn't used to this kind of treatment.

"I'm okay. Thank you though." I said and continued to rub the side of his face.

"I am starving though. Are you going to keep me in here the entire time or are you going to let me out.?" I asked looking into those warm eyes.

He looked at me for a few seconds and I knew exactly what he was thinking, making me sigh as I withdrew my hand from his face and set both my hands on my lap.

"It's not like I can even run away. We're thousands of miles away from my kingdom and even if I sent out a sign, they wouldn't see it. Basically I'm stuck here with you." I said looking at him.

He thought for a bit before he stepped aside and looked at me. I raised my eyebrow at him, wondering just what he was doing.

"You said you wanted to come out."

I stared at him in utter shock and disbelief as it dawned upon me. I stood up and walked towards the cage and pushed it. To my surprise, it opened.

Was this cage opened the entire time?

"Why do you think I slept in front of the cage?"

I rolled my eyes and at him and walked out of the cave. Once I was outside, I had to actually take a few minutes to get used to the sunlight, after all it was so dark down there.

I looked around and marveled at the beauty of whatever land this was. From the angle in which Aeldit had flown in, everything looked so dead, but here everything so beautiful.

I stood at the edge of the cliff and looked over at the waves that crashed onto the foot of the cliff. I looked at the clear blue sky above that was filled with birds flying around, and I found myself smiling for I don't know how many times already.

I watched as Aeldit flapped his wings and flew into the sky towards the birds. He flew around them for a while before flying back to where I was and dropping three dead birds down.

"Gross" I said a bit loud.

I looked at them, and resisted making a puking face when I looked at him, and saw the expectant look in his eye. It was almost like a child's that was waiting for an approval.

"Thank you" I said patted his head.

"Now, do you want to help me cook them" I asked and actually laughed when he looked so confused.

After explaining to him what I meant, and struggling for almost and hour more, trying to clean the birds, eventually he made a fire, and I cooked them over the flames.

If someone had told me a few days ago, that I'd be here, cleaning my own birds and cooking it over a dragon's flame, I would have definitely deemed that person insane.

But I actually liked it. I liked spending time with Aeldit, and I found that I wasn't afraid of him, from the moment our eyes met, I knew I was safe with him and I knew he wouldn't hurt me.

Maybe I was the one insane..
