Chapter Chapter Fourteen
Unedited...
Nathan really was busy. Although she was sleeping in his room, in his bed, that was now technically their bed, it didn't feel like they were giving their marriage a second chance.
She knows everything takes time, and they needed a lot of time. She spent months wondering if Jasmine was going to get the love of a father, so she was happy getting to watch them together.
The last few nights, Nathan was pretty much gone all the time. He never came to bed, at least not the bed she was sleeping in. She did see him though, during Jasmine's night feedings. Her cries at night brought both of them to the nursery. He was always there before her. She would sit in the rocking chair and breastfeed and he would patiently wait until she was done just to hold jasmine until she fell asleep again. He barely spoke, but she got the unspoken words of needing time and stayed silent.
Tonight, as she sat in the rocking chair and fed her daughter, she wondered where he was. He was a no show. It surprised her every night when he was there, and tonight it surprised her that he wasn't. She actually wasn't sure if he was home or not. She wanted to call him during the day just to ask how he was doing, but she was afraid.
Unexpectedly, she began to hear the closing and opening of a door and footsteps. The next minute he enters the room looking like he had the world of problems. Hair a mess, like he's been dragging his hands through it all day, his collar was undone, sleeves rolled up, and his fingers were typing away on his phone.
He turns his phone off and meets her eyes. His eyes quickly move to his daughter. He takes off his jacket from his matching black suit and slowly moves closer to inspect Jasmine.
Her eyes were bright. She was staring at Sabrina with a look of curiosity. When her father neared, her eyes narrowed towards him. He smiled, and then she smiled.
"That was her first real smile," Sabrina says in aww.
"Really?" He continues to gaze at her.
Jasmine has completely stopped nursing and just kept cheesing at her father.
"Yes." She laughs. "This is the cutest thing."
"It is, isn't it." He stretches his arms out and takes her onto his chest.
She watched as he kisses her cheek, rubs her back until she burps, then gazes at her lovely like he always does. "Hey, my little jingle bell." He baby talks. "How was your day today? I've missed you."
Jasmine smile didn't fade but her eyes were getting droopy. As he held her to his chest, he rocked her gently, and she fell asleep quickly. She loves her sleep.
"When is your mother coming back from her trip?" She decided to make a conversation but was also a little curious.
"I don't know." He states.
"Hmm." She was already running out of things to say. She searches the room like it would find something laying around. "How are things at work?"
"Busy." He replies. "How are things here? Have you acclimated your self with the place?"
"Yes, it's very convenient."
"Good."
That awkward silence was back. He continues to stare at Jasmine, and Sabrina continued to stare at the both of them.
"Thank you." He whispers and finds her eyes.
"For what?" She creases her eyebrows.
"For her." He turns and settles Jasmine in her crib.
She looks at the ground. "You don't have to thank me."
"Don't do that. Look at me." He commands.
She locks eyes with him.
"Thank you." He says again.
"You're welcome." She replies.
He sticks his hands in his pockets. "You are going to need to hire a Nannie soon."
That was a quick change in the subject. "I'm not so sure about that. I've heard a lot of crazy Nannie stories, and-"
"I understand.." He cuts her off. "I have a colleague that has had his nanny for 13 years. His children are grown now, and she comes highly recommended. So much so, that he is keeping her employed until he finds her the right position." "Why do we need a nanny?"
"We may have places that we need to be. I have a few events coming up that may begin past her bedtime."
"Oh." She guessed he was right.
"I can set up a few interviews." He states.
"We have some time to think about it, right? Jasmine is only a few weeks old."
"I have events I want you to attend with me coming up very soon."
She searches the room. She was conflicted with wanting to spend time with him and not wanting to leave Jasmine.
"It's will only be for a few hours at a time." He tries to convince her."
"I guess it won't hurt to interview a few women."
A few days later, Nathan set up and interview with a few potential nannies in his work office. He was so busy he couldn't afford time away and asked her to come and bring his daughter.
It was turning out to be a horrible day. Jasmine was screaming her lungs off from her car seat in the back seat of the car. It was completely Sabrina's fault, she thought that she packed her pacifier but somehow it's not her baby bag. "Maybe it fell." She speaks to herself as she searches the floor.
"Do you want me to stop at the nearest store?" The driver asks.
"Yes, please." She whips out her phone and texted one of her bodyguards to come to the truck to watch Jasmine. They were in a truck behind her following her.
As she hops out of the vehicle her two bodyguards pulled alongside and park up. She rushed out of the truck and into the store.
She asked the clerk if he had any pacifiers. The clerk nods. He was an older gentleman and seem to move at his own pace. Not only that, but he also had a zoned-out expression in he like he recognized her.
"Can I have one please?" She asks trying to ignore the stare.
He nods again and tries to reach to where it was hanging, two feet higher than his arm length. "One second." He holds up a finger and moves to the back of the cramped store. She glances around and realized she was in a not so great part of town.
"Hurry please, my daughter is crying." She yells out as he walks away.
"Sabrina right." A boy in his teens with baggy colorfully sweats and a tank top was standing behind her. He was holding a loaf of sliced bread like it was laundry on his hip and had a carton of chocolate milk in his hand.
She doesn't say anything to him, she looks back for the slow clerk. By now, her second bodyguards Conner had come into the store and stood near her.
"So it's a girl?" Fruity was brave, wasn't he? "Who's the father? Is it Nathan? Is this your bodyguard?"
"No questions," Conner states.
She completely ignores him. But she needed to get out of this store. "Conner, can you reach that pacifier?"
He smiles. "Yes ma'am." He walks behind the counter and reaches out and effortlessly takes it. She leaves a twenty-dollar bill and rushes out of the store.
Surprise, no surprise. There was a mob of paparazzi. Someone tipped them off. She covers her eyes from the flashing lights as they hailed on her with questions. "Is it Nathan's baby? Are you two back together? Where is the baby? "Do you know who the father is?" "Why are you in Brentwood?" It was finally out now. Not that they were trying to hide it.
Nathan didn't respond about his personal life to the media. The media responded by hunting and chasing them down with cameras.
"You're a gold digger! Desmond was right about you!"Someone in the crowd of people screamed.
She flinched at that one. The next thing she knew she felt something hit the side of her face and fall to the floor. It hurt and when she glanced to see what it was, she was shocked. It was a phone. An expensive phone. She couldn't believe someone just literally threw their phone at her.
She jumps into the limo and rips open the pacifier pack. She washes quickly with bottled water, then soothes her crying daughter. Hunter was making funny faces trying to calm her. She almost hadn't realized he was there. "What happened?" He asks, noticing her holding her cheek.
She shakes her head not wanting to even speak of it.
"Did Conner kill anyone?"
She keeps her eyes constant on her baby girl and shakes her head. "He doesn't know, he was trying to clear a path in front of me."
"Nathan is going to kill us." He puts his hands on head.
"No, I'll let him know that it was my fault. Can I have a moment?" She needed to be alone.
"Sure." He asks the driver to pull over and goes back to his vehicle behind the truck.
"Can we just stay here for a few minutes?" She asks her driver.
"Of course."
They stayed for 10 minutes before she was ok again.
When she arrived in Nathan's building she was late by 19 minutes, but she still needed a second in the bathroom. Conner and Hunter were waiting outside the door with Jasmine as she took a look at her face. There was a bruise already there. She throws some cold water to try and ease the ace that was now pounding through her head. These people mean nothing, they knew nothing, they were worth nothing to her. She assures herself. She was not going to let this get her down. Once she gets a hold of herself, she makes her way to Nathan's office.
"Mrs. Alden." Anthony greets her. "You're late. We've been calling your phone. Mr. Alden is very upset."
"Oh, it's in the baby bag."
"This way." He hurries her into Nathan's conference room.
He was already interviewing a woman.
She makes her way around the oval table near Nathan.
"Hello, I'm Sabrina." She sets the car seat on the table with Jasmine still sleeping in it and extends her hand, then takes a seat on his right side because the bruise was on her right side.
"Allison." She greets back. "So nice to meet you.
"We were just finishing up." Nathan stands and opens the door for Allison to leave. "We'll be in touch." He shuts the door behind her.
"Is something wrong with her?" Sabrina asks
He briskly moves to her and sits near. He turns her chair to face him and puts one hand around her neck as if he was going to choke her. She knew better than to fear him. He knew about the bruise. Hunter or Conner must have called him. "Let me see." He slowly tilted her head to look at her jaw.
He inspects her closely. All the while rubbing his thumb gently. That's what she was thinking about, instead of what he was looking at.
"What happened?"
She had been gazing at him, watching the movement of his eyes until then. Her eyes dropped to the floor. "Can we talk about it later?"
He gently forces her eyes back on him by nudging her head up. "No."
"Someone threw a phone at me." She just lets it bluntly come out of her mouth.
"Someone threw something at you? He began to grind his teeth.
"A phone."
He drops his hand to his pocket and pulls out his phone. "I don't know how the fuck you can have two men, over six feet, two hundred and fifty pounds separately, there to protect your body literally, and you get hit with a god damn phone." "Wait." She grabs his forearm.
He wraps his arm around hers and holds onto it... He holds her in place as he continues to press buttons on his phone.
"It's not their fault, there was a mob of paparazzi."
"Where? Here? You were supposed to go into the parking garage."
"No, we did." She puts her other hand on his hand. "I forgot Jasmine's pacifier and we had to stop at a convenience store."
He grinds his teeth more.
"Hunter was with Jasmine in the car, and Conner was trying to clear a path for me."
"Next time, let one of them run into the store." He talks between his teeth. "You know what, there's not going to be a next time because they both No longer work for me.
"No, Nathan I like them."
He looked as if he didn't like her saying that.
"They are good to Jasmine, and it was my fault I didn't warn them of what I was doing. Jasmine was screaming and I just wanted her to stop."
"Who threw it?" He didn't let go of her arm.
"I didn't see."
"So what, now this person just gets to get away scot-free. Look at your face!" He shouts.
"I don't want it to be a bigger thing than it really is. Then it will just give the tabloids more to talk about."
"You don't deserve this." He brings both of his hands around her neck and jaw as he searches her face. "Does it hurt?"
"No." She lies.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked the two of you to come here. I should have come home. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm selfish, and now look at your face." His focus on her was soft. The expression was one that went unseen for a long time.
"It's okay." She touches his hand.
"It's not okay." He reaches to the phone on the table and presses a button. "Anthony, get me some ice in a cloth."
"Will do Sir, also sir, I have your mother on line three. She's called four times already, and said she's getting your voicemail"
"I know she's getting my voicemail, that's what happens when you ignore a phone call." He lets out a breath. "Just put her through, and get me that ice."
The office phone rings and he quickly presses the speaker button. "What's the emergency? mother."
"I'm getting alerts on my phone about you and Sabrina. Is it true?"
"Depends on what you've been reading."
"Is Sabrina's baby yours."
"Yes." He replies simply.
The other end of the phone was silent. Sabrina wished she could see her face so she could have at least some guess as to what she was thinking.
He grabs the cloth filled with ice from Anthony who had quietly come and left. He pulls up in a chair near her and pressed it on her cheek.
"Ouch." It hurt.
"Are you and Sabrina back together?" Vivian didn't happy or sad.
"Yes." He answers again. "Is that all?"
"But...Nathan...she hurt you."
"And I've forgiven her."
Sabrina puts her hand over his and takes over holding the ice to her face.
Vivian was quiet again.
He leans back in his chair. "Anything else?"
"No, just, if you're happy then, I'm happy."
What? That was the last thing that was expected. The truth is, Sabrina suspected Vivian of setting her up somehow. It was crazy she thought, but it was something in her gut just telling her that. Well, she knows one thing for sure. If she did do it, then them getting back together was the last thing she expected.
"I have to go. Enjoy the rest of your vacation." He swivels his chair towards the table. "I have another call." He presses a flashing red button on the phone.
"Conner here sir."
"I don't care what you have to do, find the person that threw that phone."
"Yes sir," Conner replies.
"You can start by going back to where it happened and looking for it."
"Yes sir."
Nathan presses another red flashing button.
"Sir." It was Anthony. "Your next appointment is here."
He turns his chair back towards her. "The other nanny... Are you up for this?"
She nods.
