Chapter Chapter Thirteen
Unedited.......
Sabrina looks up at the ceiling, her eyes close, and she covers her face in her hands. It was showing shame she shouldn't be feeling.
She moves her head forward and slowly lowers her hands to peek at him.
He has a serious glare on her. She meets his eyes, but couldn't hold them for long. She lets her eyelids drop.
Nathan was flabbergasted. He hadn't realized how much he hoped her absurd story was true, or how much he wanted it to be true. How much he was actually was believing her. "What exactly did you do?" He asks without thinking. She continues to look at the ground. "I..I cheated on you." Only God could have told her she would ever be lying on herself.
He nods his head, taking her words in. "Why?"
"It's like you said. I wasn't thinking clearly." She swallows as she looks away from the ground towards the window. "I wanted a baby. You wanted to stop trying."
He stood motionless in the same spot with his hands in his pockets like a statue. As he looked at her, he realized she seemed like the person she was before, but now he wasn't so sure. He made a huge mistake saying anything about a second chance. He had no idea what that truly meant.
She looks away from the window and meets his eyes. "But you have to know, I didn't want him. I never wanted him."
Jasmine. The light in all of this. At least Sabrina has what she left searching for. She shouldn't go out running away to get pregnant. Not that he would ever let it come to that again.
"Say something."
He couldn't.
"You've changed your mind?" She asks.
Finally, after some time he clears his throat. "Begin packing your, and Jasmine's things, and tie up any loose ends you have here. I have a few things I need to clear up as well. Is two weeks enough time?"
Stumped, she nods. Holy crap! He was serious. "I have a lease." She states.
"I'll pay it off." He replies simply.
"Okay.....I have one stipulation." She has to end it before this went any further.
He waits for her to speak.
"Is this only for Jasmine? Or do you want to be with me? Because, if you're doing this just for Jasmine, then I'm prepared to sign the divorce papers." She admitted to it, now he could divorce her if he wants, but if he could forgive her, and he wanted to be with her, then he loves her, and they had a real second chance.
He pulls his right hand out of his pocket and ran it through his hair. "I'll be back to pick you." He stressed the word "and Jasmine up in two weeks." He turns towards the door. "I'll call you." He gives her one last look and nods before closing the door.
Holy crap. Did she just become Nathan Alden's wife again? Did she really just get her husband back? Somehow it didn't make her feel as good as it should have. But she was going to try to make this work. She thought back about all they have been through. How much he tried to make her happy. She was going to make sure Nathan felt secure and loved. She was going to make him happy.
As she gazed at her sleeping daughter. She hoped that she could make things work for her more than herself.
Two weeks came too quickly. It was exhausting breastfeeding around the clock and trying to pack. Thank god for her mother. She didn't have a tired bone in her body. She took Jasmine for hours after she would get off of work. She literally thought that Sabrina was playing a prank on her when she was told that they were moving in with Nathan in two weeks.
When she told Gracie, she was outraged.
"What's the matter with you? Please tell me you're joking." She yells over the phone.
"I'm not, and don't tell mom. I told her that Nathan believes me
"Oh my god, Sabrina! This is so stupid. This is not going to fix you, and Nathan. This is going to make things worse. You just admitted it for nothing because it's not going to work."
"I know I'm taking a chance."
"Do you know how weak, desperate, and pathetic you seem."
"Gracie." Sabrina's voice turned stern.
"I'm sorry." Gracie mumbles. "It's just you don't need him.
"I know I don't. Call me whatever you want. Pathetic, desperate, insane. Love makes you do crazy things, and I love him. There's no one else for me."
"I just can't understand why you would want to be with him."
"You remember what mom used to tell us about boys and how to pick them?"
"Yeah... Find a guy that puts you first, treats you well, cares for you, and respects you. Not a guy with money or good looks." Gracie states.
"Right...And Nathan treated me like a queen. He did all of those things. He gets annoyed easily, but he has a good heart. He's a good man, and he loved me. You can call me stupid for what I'm doing, but I'm not going to block our happiness any longer."
"This is not going to guarantee your happiness."
"I won't know unless I try."
What if it doesn't work out?"
"Then I'll get the closure that I need."
"This is crazy."
"I know, but at least I could tell Jasmine that we tried."
"Don't use my niece as your excuse."
"Yes, she's one of my reasons. Look, Gracie, I love him, and now we have a daughter together. What's so wrong with wanting to try
again?"
Gracie was quiet for a moment. "I just don't think it was smart to lie. What if he just wanted you to admit it so-"
"Then I'll give him what he wants" Sabrina cuts her off.
Moving day.
The moments before Nathan left Sabrina's apartment he didn't look as if he was ready to move past much. She assumed that he might change his mind. She hadn't started packing until he called her to ask if he could see Jasmine on FaceTime. While he was staring at her, he asked if she had gotten much packing done. She admitted she didn't. He asked if she wanted him to hire help. Of course, she said no, and now she just felt sore everywhere. Nathan arrived nine in the AM. He brought movers and a truck, and as they loaded the truck, he gave Jasmine his undivided attention. He held her for hours until it was time to put her in her car seat. Then he held her on the plane for most of the ride. She didn't mind the lack of attention she was getting or the fact that he had barely spoken to her. She was enjoying the sight of Jasmine and her father.
By the time they arrived at Nathan's condo, it was around dinner time, but you could swear that it was daytime with the thriving life and city noise that surrounded the building. It was thousands of feet tall. There were two doormen standing at the sides of the door entrance. A bellhop waiting to help, and a receptionist. All were men except the receptionist and she was very surprised to see her. She had to admit, the doormen hid it pretty well, but the receptionist, her jaw nearly hit the floor.
"Good evening Mr. Alden." She greeted sweetly. For a second she hadn't realized he had a car seat in his hand and Sabrina behind him. Her head shifts to Sabrina and her smile disappears. "Mrs. Alden." That sweetness turned sour. She glances at the car seat. If she hadn't seen the stories then she'd be the first. She put that sweet smile back on her face as fast as it left, but not before disappointment crossed her eyes.
"Any packages?" He replies.
"No sir, but your Laundry has arrived."
"Good, send it up." He continues to walk past her and into a hidden corner of the lobby with a private elevator. The bell boy politely asked for the baby bag, and when she gave it to him, he put it on an unnecessary cart and followed them in. He even pressed the button.
Once they finally arrived, Nathan gave her a quick tour he showed her his room first. "This is where you will be sleeping." He told her. Then he showed her Jasmine's room. He had everything, down to a diaper pale. "Wow, Nathan, it's beautiful."
"I had one of the top interior decorators design it."
Everything was magenta and cream. It was colors she would have never thought to put together, but it worked. Jasmine's name was right about her crib in capital letters along with little bunnies and chicks.
He sets the car seat down, takes a sleeping Jasmine into his arms, and places her in her crib. They both gaze at her for a few moments before it became awkward again.
They were alone, and back together. But the intimacy they once shared was nonexistence.
"We should talk." He whispers and nods his head in the direction of the door.
She follows him into the kitchen where she took a seat on the stool by the island. He moves to the fridge, grabs two bottles of water, passes her one, and stands across from her.
"Drink." He orders.
She takes a sip and stays quiet. She had so many questions she wanted to ask. Like, where did they go from here? Was he rethinking his decision? Is he still in love with her? But she didn't want to push him. She quietly drank her water and patiently waited for him to speak.
"I know we haven't spoken much. I've been very busy."
"It's okay." She smiles gently.
He nods. This awkwardness between them was getting worse.
"If we're going to do this, then you will need to understand a few things"
"Okay..."
"I told you before that you no longer knew me. That is still very true. I am not the man you were married to before. Things will be different and you need to understand that."
She nods trying not to show the sadness in her eyes. She hoped that they could grow from here. She knew that it would never be the same but maybe it could be close.
"My work schedule is very hectic. I will be gone frequently."
"Okay." She nods again.
"I don't want Jasmine, nor you, to leave this condo without my knowledge, or consent."
"Okay."
"When you do, two bodyguards will be in tow. One, for your protection, and the other for my own peace of mind. A second chance at our marriage doesn't equal trust. You have to earn that back. This is one of the ways that you can do that." What did she expect? She did tell him she was a cheater and slightly crazy. "Okay."
The intercom system by the front door rings off.
"It's the front desk." Nathan moves over to it by the front door and hits a green button. The receptionist at the from desk appeared on the monitor. "Yes." He answers.
"Clarissa and family are here to see you. Should I send them up?"
Nathan releases a breath. "Yes." He presses a red button and narrows his eyes towards Sabrina. "They know of us getting back together, and want to see Jasmine." Sabrina had to admit she was excited to see them. Minutes later she was surrounded.
"Shhh." There's a new baby here, remember guys." Clarissa tries to quite her noisy children, as she shuts the front door. "I know it's late. We won't stay long. She looks from Nathan to Sabrina.
"Congratulations." Jacob hands Nathan a bottle of brandy with a pretty pink bow on it. "I know you stopped drinking but I figured if you wanted to celebrate.
Where's Jasmine?" Clarissa looks to her sister-in-law.
"She's sleeping." They give each other a hug.
They spent the evening catching up. It was what they always did. Ate good food, Delivery, and had a great conversation. The only difference was that Nathan and Jacob were always across the room and in their own conversation. Sabrina knew Nathan would be this way, but it was strange for Jacob. Soon Jasmine woke. Once she was fed, she was passed around the room.
"Has mom seen her yet?" Clarissa smiled down at her niece.
"No. "She doesn't know Jasmine is mine yet.
"Where is she?" Jacob asks.
"She's on some vacation with friends." Nathan answers.
Sabrina lets out a breath. How could she forget about her Mother-in-law?
