Heart of Ra

Chapter 16

Something definitely wasn't right. The tunnel they had walked through led them to chamber of gold with another exit at the other side. Karin sighed as she glanced around.

“Don't touch anything. We don't know if they're traps laying around.” It was a more possibility that there was but with Cleo with them, she didn't want her frightened than she already seemed. They spread out on the hopes of finding the container with Set's immortality and powers in it. They didn't really know what it exactly looked like but Karin was hoping that it would be something that was sticking out.

“It’s not here.” She nodded in agreement. For all they knew, whoever was here probably had it. Karin started following them out the other side before pausing. What was that? Looking up at the hallway entrance, she quickly pushed Cleo into the others as she fell back before a set of spikes came down, separating them.

“Karin!”

“I'm fine.” She got up and dusted herself off before looking into Cleo's terrified face, “Cleo, I'm alright.”

“Yeah, but-”

“Look, I'll find another way, just keep going and we'll meet up.”

“Are you sure?” She glanced at Ra and nodded. What choice did they have? Karin looked at the spiked bars. She could probably break them but then there was a possibility that the whole chamber would collapse in them and she wasn't going to risk Cleo getting hurt. It was bad enough she was here as it was.

“Just look after her.” He nodded and they slowly walked away and out of sight.

Going back to the other tunnels, she glanced at the first then the second. Sighing, she walked through the first one and kept looking around the tunnel. The fact that a trap had went off back in the gold chamber ment someone had to have been there which meant, who ever was here were about to get the biggest surprise of their life. Especially since they had the one thing that could destroy everything. Karin slowed her pace as she came into the clearing. The bright light coming from above meant they had come down but if that was the case then why were they still here? She looked around the corner, noticing at least ten people and one guy who was barking out orders. She glanced upwards to see if she could spy Cleo or the others but with the sun glaring down she avoided burning the hell out of her eyes. Taking her guns from their holsters, she slowly walked out her hiding space and with them out stretched, proceeded with caution. Until, of course, the click of gun from behind made her stop.

“Drop your weapons.” She glanced behind her, noticing a few other people had their guns pointed at her and dropped her weapons. Of course, guns never did suit her. A few ropes found their way around her body and tightened to the point where she grunted. Stupid morons.

“Well well well…” She turned her attention to the man in front of her. The scars on her back were giving off signals that were starting to bother her and it wasn't even due to the rope. Damn demons, “Horus did tell me that I would have company but a human wasn't exactly what I was expecting.” He glanced around with a wide grin forming on his face showing a slight hint of fang and Karin couldn't help roll her eyes. Of course it was fucking demons, “and I was also expecting more.”

“Uh huh. I'm sure you were.” The ropes tightened and she was starting to get ticked off. He looked at her expressionless face and laughed out loud.

“Tell me if I'm wrong but you're just so helpless.” Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“Tell me I'm wrong but, this tomb will be your grave.” He arched a brow.

“You're wrong sweet heart.” he leaned in closer and she practically feel her blood burning, “this will be your grave. After what I get Horus the item he needs, I'll enjoy watching you die.” She furrowed her brows. He didn't have it. Which meant it might still be here. Glancing around slowly she took in her surroundings before looking back at him. So be it if this became her grave. If preventing Horus from getting his hands on Tut's soul was the price then she'd gladly pay the price but she wouldn't go down alone. The wind picked up around them and his eyes widened as he stared at her.

“Too bad I'm not totally human.”

What the fuck? Ra shielded them from the wind storm Karin had started to create but it took him less time to realize what her actual plan was until the walls and floor of the platform they were on started to shake and crumble. Pushing Cleo back towards the entrance, they all started to run.

“What about Karin?” Cleo went to stop but he grabbed her hand and dragged her behind him

“She knows what she's doing.” He wasn't entirely sure but he had a gut feeling he knew exactly what she was doing. Pieces of the tomb started falling around them as they continued. Taking a different path than the one they came through, they all jumped out of the exit and rolled down a dirt hill as the tomb collapsed on itself. Cleo sat up and the tears in her eyes along with the pain and heart ache that was there tore at him. But the soul shattering scream that she released was the one that broke him the most.

“Karin!!!”

She sat there on the hot sand, staring at the giant dust cloud that took place of Tut's tomb. The very place where Karin was. She was gone. Cleo wanted to run back and get her as she fought the arms that kept her place. She knew Karin was a strong person and refused to believe that she was the one that sacrificed herself in order to keep Horus from summoning Set, too keep her safe. If only she never came to Egypt, if she had ignore her father's call and stayed home… Cleo stilled in Ra's arms as she stared at the dust storm.

“It's… It's my fault.” Her words came out broke but by the way Ra stiffened behind her, she figure he heard her.

“No, it isn't.”

“Yes, it is!” She pushed him away and stood before glaring at him and pointing towards the dust cloud, “take a look around Ra! Karin is dead because of me! Horus won! If it wasn't for me coming here, Karin wouldn't be dead and we'd have the damn container holding Set's powers inside!”

“I didn't take you for a quiter.”

“What else do you cal-” she whirled around and paused with her mouth open and eyes wide. Fresh tears spilled down her cheeks as she stared at the person in front of her, “Karin!” Throwing herself at her best friend, she did hear Karin grunt as they fell into the sand or that she was sounding like a baby as she cried out loudly. She was okay, her best friend was alive.

“You should I'm not actually allowed to die.”

“No because if you died here then we'd all be in trouble.” Cleo sat up and looked at the man that watched them in amusement. Who was this guy? He wasn't with them when they entered nor when they left. She looked back at Karin and noticed her long hair was now shoulder length. Karin sat up the moment Cleo moved back.

“Cleo, this is Anubis.” He nodded and glanced at Ra before looking at Karin

“Are you going to be okay?” She gave him a deadpan look.

“I don't need a babysitter. I've been handling myself just fine.” Anubis sighed before raising his hands in surrender then vanished into nothing. What just happened? “Let's get out of here. I need a shower and probably fix this mess.” She messed with her hair, clearly hating how uneven most of it was and Cleo couldn't help but laugh.

“That sounds good.” She glanced at Ra only to find him looking the other way. She was going to have to apologize and then break the news that she was leaving. A slight pain had her rubbing at her chest. Cleo never did like goodbyes but for some reason this felt as though it was going to most painful one yet.
