Chapter 15
Cleo was glad that Karin was here and seemed okay but the way she glared at Ra had given her a bad feeling about all of this. She say down next to Karin on the couch and the scowl on Ra's face made her want to laugh.
“Look, I honestly didn't know that Horus wanted to do that. All I knew was that he wanted Tut's soul. How do you even know about all this?” Great, Ra was basically accusing her best friend of treachery.
“Ra, Karin didn't-”
“Anubis told me and asked for my help.” the room went quiet before Ra busted up laughing.
“That was a good one. But really how?” The seriousness on Karin's face didn't waver and that gave Ra pause, “you're not joking.”
“Good to know you figured it out.” Cleo bit her lip in irritation
“Will someone please tell me what the hell is going on?!” Ra looked surprised at her outburst while Karin just signed.
“Does she know?” Oh great, they talking like she wasn't here again.
“No. I don't want her to be a part of this.” Karin scoffed and rolled her eyes.
“Cleo is a part of this, thanks to you.” She turned towards Cleo and she couldn't help notice how tired and exhausted Karin really looked, “Horus, gave your boyfriend here an ultimatum, either give him Tut's soul or Horus will hurt you.” Cleo looked at Ra for confirmation but he wouldn't look at her.
“Why king Tut's soul?”
“It can awaken and releases Set from his prison.” Cleo chewed on her lip thinking as Ra groaned.
“King Tut's soul is long gone, though.”
“I didn't think gods here were clueless.” Karin sighed and Cleo's eyes widened.
“He's not actually talking about the soul he's talking about an object.” A smile played at Karin's lips as she nodded.
Ra sat there totally lost. Cleo acted like she just won some damn prize and Karin, well he still wasn't sure what to think about her.
“Why would he talk about an object? No offense, I know you told me bout this stuff before but why would we look for a useless object if there isn't a soul inside of it?” Karin muttered something in a language he didn't understand while Cleo seemed slightly confused.
“Horus isn't talking about an actual soul. An object can be anything to a person if it's cherished enough.” that seemed to make sense, in a weird human way.
“So wait, if the object doesn't have a soul inside, then what's in it that Horus could use to awaken Set?” Cleo stared at Karin, seeking the answers she had. It was Ra's ability to see exactly where she was going with this and why he nor his sister could find any actual answers.
“Set's powers and immortality are inside.” Ra sat back in his seat and groaned. Well they were fucked if Horus got his hands on that. He had heard that Tut had sealed Set away but he didn't know, at least not til now. But why would Horus want to unleash a monster like that for? Being so caught up in his own thoughts, Ra didn't even realize that Cleo had disappeared from the room and that unsettled him.
“Relax, she just went to bed.” He looked over at Karin and noticed she was watching him with curiosity.
“I've been like this since I found out about the mark.” She nodded.
“But you're also pondering over something else, care to share?” It was a little scary how this, human? He still wasn't sure what to make of her, seemed to read him like a book.
“She's suppose to be the key to finding my heart, yet I have no idea what I'm suppose to be looking for.” He watched as a small smile appeared on her lips and she shook her head. Did he say something funny?
“Men can be so clueless sometimes.” She sighed, “Ra, Cleo isn't the key to finding it, she is your heart. She is the vessel that carries you're every emotion, every breath and every beat you feel in your chest. She is the reason you are you and not a closed off robot you once were.” He stared at her shock.
“How do you know all this?” Karin shrugged but the smile slowly disappeared.
“There is something similar in Japan.” She looked at him and sighed, “but that brings us to our next problem.”
“What would that be?”
“Despite Cleo being your heart, she is still a vessel and as such she can be used to give back Set's reign of terror and power.” Why the hell couldn't they be given a break?
It's been three days since she had last seen Horus and he was probably seeking revenge against Karin. Cleo sighed as she sat in her horse next to Ra while Karin sat on hers in front of them with three men next to her. She didn't understand why they were there or why Ra was constantly muttering under his breath about them being giant mutts but what worried her the most was how quiet her best friend had been while they were planning and all through the journey here. She sighed slightly as Tut's tomb sat at least three miles away.
“You know, I could always take you back to the hotel.” She sent a small glare towards Ra and shook her head.
“And as I told you the last three times, I'm not letting her go by herself. Besides I haven't seen her since college so I'm going to spend this time with her.”
“I don't like this, and I don't like you being in the middle of danger.” She groaned.
“This is nothing new to me. Besides it's a little late for that. You should've stayed away from me before all shit hit the fan.” She hated the ton of her voice but she had started to get irritated with him and the same damn conversation. But if she was being honest, Cleo wasn't sure who she blamed more, him or herself. Ra grunted and kept quiet afterwards. If anything putting distance between them was for the best. Now that the big event was over at the museum, she was due back home in a few days. Even though arguing wasn't the best option right now, it was better than thinking of anything negative. The wind picked up pace and Cleo had to shield her eyes before blinking and noticing Karin looking at them as her eyes glowed that purple she loved so much.
“Let's go.” She nodded and followed Karin with Ra right behind them as their horses sped through towards the tomb.
They noticed there were other horses and she was worried that they were too late that and that whoever was here was armed. Cleo sighed before following closely to Ra as they walked into the temple.
“You do realize there is nothing to be worried about, right?” She glanced up at Ra's low voice to see him looking at her over his shoulder as they continued on.
“Huh?”
“The worry is all over your face, nuri.” He reached back and held her hand, giving it a light squeeze, “I'm a god with a couple of shifters and… well, whatever Karin is. So there isn't a need to be worried.” She smiled and chuckled lightly.
“I know. And Karin is half a god.” The shocked look on his face was priceless and she grinned.
“How is that even possible?” She shrugged.
“As far as my knowledge, her lineage comes from the Japanese wind god, Fujin.” He nodded but looked still amazed at this. As they continued on, they came to a stop as tunnels lined the wall in front of them. One of the men that was with with them, went to each tunnel and seemed to be sniffing each entranced before pausing at the one on the far right and nodded.
“They went through here.” Karin glanced back towards the others and Cleo couldn't help but notice the slight worry that was on her face before it vanished and pulled out her guns to check them before reholstering them on her thighs and began moving again. Cleo just hoped they wouldn't run into any traps of flying bullets.
