Chapter 26 On The Horns of A Dilemma
Elena ran through the front door as soon as she recovered from her dismay.
"Elena? Where are you going?" Elena heard Damon called out for her, but she ignored him. She gotta find Becca before it was too late.
Elena racked her brain, thinking of the places where Becca might be in that precise moment. The first place that popped in Elena's head was Wickery Bridge, where her parents died. Using her vampire speed, Elena ran there. She felt crestfallen when she found no hints of Becca there.
Elena screamed out in frustration as she walked back and forth at the Wickery Bridge, trying to think of other places where Becca might be right then.
"Wait a minute... Clock tower," she murmured to herself as the place flitted into her mind. She wasted no time and headed to the clock tower in the Town Square. From afar, she could see a figure was standing on the top of the clock tower. The figure jumped off the building and a gasp escaped Elena's throat. She quickly sped off there. The second she stopped at the curb on the bottom of the clock tower, it was the second the figure's body landed harshly on the ground and blood leaked out from her head and body. Elena clasped her hand over her mouth as she saw the event with her own eyes. The figure was a girl and had blonde locks, just like Becca's and Elena dreaded to think that it was most likely her daughter. Elena kneeled down beside the girl and turned the girl's body around, so she could see the girl's face.
Her eyes went wide. "No, no, no, no," Elena murmured in terror as she realized the girl was Becca. Tears started to emerge from Elena's eyes and her breath became heavier. For a second, she closed her eyes and shook her head, denying what she saw in front of her. She was hoping that it was just a nightmare, but when she opened her eyes, Becca was still there, lying on the ground with blood kept leaking out, and Elena knew that was all reality.
She took a deep breath before checking on Becca's pulse. Elena knew Becca was dying and there was only thing that could safe her, but she wasn't sure if that was what she, Damon, or Becca wanted. Considering there wasn't much time left, without even much further thinking, Elena bit her wrist and held it out toward Becca's mouth, forcing her to suck on Elena's vampire blood.
"Why would you do something like this Becca...," Elena mumbled, while letting her blood being consumed by her daughter.
A few seconds later, Damon arrived at the town square and found Elena there. "Elena... What are you...," Damon cut himself off with a gasp when he caught the sight in front of him. He saw Becca was lying unconsciously on the curb, while Elena was supporting Becca's head on her arm and trying to make Becca consumed her vampire blood.
"What happened?" Damon managed to ask. His voice was barely above a murmur. He kneeled next to his wife.
"She committed suicide, Damon..."
"She what?!" Damon replied incredulously barely after Elena told him what she just witnessed in front of her eyes. After Elena thought Becca sucked enough of her blood, she pulled her wrist away from Becca's mouth and wiped the remaining blood away from her daughter's face.
"I ran here as fast as I could, but I failed to safe her," Elena told Damon, starting to sob loudly.
"Oh, Elena...," Damon said, wrapping his arms around Elena's trembling body.
"I had no other choice except turning her into a vampire. I can't... I can't lose her... I can't lose another person that I love Damon... I just can't...," Elena stated in between her sobs. She laid her head on Damon's chest while Damon held her tightly and caressed her hair.
They stayed like that for a few minutes before Damon whispered in her ear, "It's okay, Elena... I understand. I would do the same if I were you. Let's just take her home, okay?" He said that in a reassuring way. He rubbed her upper arm soothingly.
He knew Elena would feel bad about this because neither her nor himself wanted their daughter to become a vampire. It was not their plan in the first place.
Elena finally breathed normally. "Okay," she said, nodded her head weakly.
"Alright," Damon replied. He gently placed a kiss on the top of her head before helping her standing up on her feet. Damon put both of his hands under Becca's limp body and carried her the whole way back to their home.
Becca opened her eyes and gasped suddenly as she gained back her consciousness. She sat up and saw Elena who was sitting on the bed and Damon who was standing next to Elena, rubbing her shoulder. She needed a few seconds to realize she was in her room.
"Mom? Daddy?" Becca uttered in confusion.
Elena wrapped her arms around Becca and pulled her daughter into a bear hug almost immediately.
"Oh, Becca... I thought I was going to lose you," Elena said. Her voice was a mixture between concern and relief. After Elena pulled back her hug, Damon inching toward
his daughter and also pulled her into a warm, tight hug.
"What happened?" Becca asked slowly after Damon finally pulled back his hug. She looked at Damon expectantly.
"You don't remember?" Damon asked her and Becca shook her head in response.
"Y-You committed s-suicide," Elena stammered.
And just like that, all of the memories flooded back into her mind. She remembered she had gone to the clock tower and jumped off, but she didn't remember what had happened after that. "You saved me?" Becca asked her Mom.
"Not exactly, sweetie... I...," Elena trailed off. She looked up at Damon, craving for help.
Damon let out an inaudible sigh. He sat next to Becca on the bed and grabbed her hands in his. He looked into Becca's eyes.
"Listen, Becca. Your mother found you at the clock tower, but you had already jumped off. She wasn't able to safe you," Damon told her softly.
"So, why am I here? I shouldn't be here. I should've been dead by now," Becca muttered in confusion. "Am I a... ghost?"
Damon shook his head. "She gave you her blood and when you died with vampire blood in you system, you become a vampire," he explained to Becca.
Becca let out a bitter laugh. "You're kidding right, Dad?"
"No, Becca... I'm serious. I know it's a lot to take, but..."
"Stop messing with my head!" Becca cut him off.
"I'm not messing with your head, sweetie. I know it's hard to take, but I'm telling you the truth," Damon replied.
"So what? I am a vampire now?" Becca asked in disbelief.
"Not completely. You're in a transition stage. You need to feed on human blood to complete your transition," Damon answered.
Becca snorted and rolled her eyes. "Sure, I would like to become a vampire. That's why I killed myself, so I could live forever," she stated sarcastically.
With her utterance, Damon frowned. "No need to be sarcastic, Rebecca. I know you don't want any of these to happen, but it is. So, deal with it."
Becca shook her head. "What's the point of any of these? What makes you think I would want to become a vampire? I don't want to live! Let alone live forever. Get real. I killed myself for a reason," Becca snapped. "And what would that be? Why would you take your own life?" Damon demanded. Hurt, sadness, and disappointment evident in his voice.
"It's just...," she trailed off. She sighed deeply.
"I don't want to talk about it," she finally murmured after a short silence.
"Becca, you can tell us anything," Elena assured her.
"I left you a letter. I wrote everything there," Becca said, trying to avoid the conversation.
"We've read it and I don't think you told us the truth. 'I do this because I want to see if I dare to do it'. Do you really think I would buy that?" Damon stated and Becca dropped her head, starring at her hands.

"Tell me the truth Becca, please... I can't stand seeing you being like this," Damon said, almost pleaded in desperation.
Becca's head shot up. "Fine! You want the truth? Ever since that bastard raped me, I feel like I'm haunted by him and what he did to me. I keep having nightmares every time I close my eyes. You, Mom, Uncle Ric, and my friends are expecting me to get better, so I pretended I did, but no, I didn't. In fact, I'm getting worse day by day and I'm sick of pretending I'm okay because I'm not! I couldn't handle the pressure, so I started to cut again," she said, spilling her hearts out. Her eyes started welling up with tears.
"You cut again? Why didn't you say anything to me or to your Mom?" Damon asked. Concern was clearly shown on his face.
"I don't want to disappoint you," Becca answered.
Damon glanced at his daughter. "No, Becca... You should've said something."
"No, Dad... Besides, I don't think you would take it well," she remarked and Damon didn't say anything because what she said was true.
Becca took a deep breath before continued her story, "Then everybody in school talked about me. They bullied me a lot. You wanna know what they called me? A sl*t, a b*tch. At first, I tried to ignore them, but their words keep rewinding in my head. It's like I couldn't get it out from my head. I can't live like this. It's like everyone and everything is against me. So, I thought suicide is the only way out. I couldn't handle the pain and I hate myself more than anything in this world. I believe death is the only solution to ending this pain." By the end of her story, she broke down and was already in tears. She sobbed loudly and uncontrollably.
Damon embraced her around his arms and Becca rested her head on his broad chest, crying onto his shirt. "I'm sorry," she murmured.
"Don't apologize, sweetie," he said. Damon caressed her hair and tried to calm her down.
"Becca, you gotta make yourself sick if keep sobbing like this. Calm your breathing for me, okay? Everything's going to be okay, sweetie, I promise. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere," Damon cooed in her ear.
It took around ten minutes to calm his daughter down, but he knew he was succeeded once Becca finally started to breathe normally, though with hiccups once in a while.
"There you go," Damon said, still rubbing her back soothingly. Becca finally pulled back from Damon's embrace. Damon looked at his daughter and wiped away the tears from her face.
"Damon, can I have a minute with Becca?" Elena requested. Damon knew Elena would give their daughter a talk about suicide and the turning of becoming a vampire because she knew what Becca had been through better than anyone else. So, he nodded his head, got up, and left them alone, but not before giving a peck on Becca's forehead and muttered an 'I love you'.
"Daddy?" she called him before he stepped out of the room.
Damon whirled around to face Becca. "Yes, Becca?"
"I'm sorry I left stains of my tears on your shirt," she chuckled in between her hiccups. In spite of her swollen face and puffy red eyes from crying, a smirk played on her lips. Damon looked down at his shirt which had a huge stain of tears on it and let out a chuckle as well. He shook his head, thinking of how could she make a joke at a time like that.
After Damon left, the room filled with silence for several minutes. Then, Elena scooted toward her daughter, cutting the gap between them. She grasped Becca's hand.
"Becca, first of all I want to apologize for what I did to you. I know it was out of line. I lost my temper and I took it out on you," Elena said. She had said those things thousand times the past several months and Becca had always turned her down. She was hoping Becca would finally forgive her.
Elena continued, "Then I failed to save you from taking your own life. Instead, I turned you into a vampire. I'm a terrible mother. I'm sorry, Becca. Would you forgive me?"
"Mom, don't say that. I already forgive you. You're not a terrible mother. You're the greatest mother that anyone could've asked for," Becca told her, hugging her mother tightly.
"Thank you, sweetie," Elena said, tearing up because of Becca's statement. After a minute or so, Elena pulled back the hug.
She looked into her daughter's eyes and said, "Becca, I'm not going to say I know what you've been through. But... I've been in a similar situation where you are right now. I know you still think that suicide is the only way out to ending all of your pain. Trust me, I know the feeling. Look around you, Becca. Everyone loves you here. Me, your Dad, Uncle Ric, your friends. Everyone cares about you, even if it doesn't seem like it. Those who bullied you at school, they don't know what you've gone through. But you do. And those who love you know what you've gone through. We know the truth and that what matters. Bullies are always gonna be bullies. I know life seems hard now, but if you hold on for a while longer, I promise it will all get better. We can go through this... together." Elena wraps her hands around her daughter's.
"What choice do I have now? I'm a vampire. I have to hold on to get through eternity," Becca stated.
"Do you remember when your dad said you're in a transition stage? You need to drink human blood within 24 hours to complete the transition. You still have a choice, Becca. If you decide you don't want to complete the transition, then you will... die," Elena told her. Elena was scared that Becca would choose not to complete the transition, but she thought it would be fair for her to know the truth. Becca stared at her mother blankly and once again, silence filled the room.

"Mom, can I ask you something?" Becca broke the silence after a few minutes.
"Sure sweetie. What is it?"
"Why did you run after me and attempted to safe me?"
"Because I don't want to lose you. I can't lose another person that I love. Losing you would be losing the half part of myself, Becca. I'd rather die than to lose you. That's how much I love you," Elena explained. Tears filled her eyes and trickled down her cheeks. Becca knew Elena was being honest. She could see it in her eyes.
They heard a knock on the door and Damon came in, holding a mug in his hand. "Is everything alright?" he inquired once he noticed Elena was tearing up. "Yeah," Elena managed to answer, wiping the tears away with the back of her hand.
Elena didn't have to say anything, but Damon knew Elena had told Becca the truth. About her feelings and also about the completion of the transition of becoming a vampire.
He put the mug down on Becca's nightstand and crouched down next to her bed.
He took a brief moment to gather all of his courage. "Becca, I brought you a glass of warm human blood. Once you drink this, it will complete the transition and you will be fully becoming a vampire. But of course, it's your choice. We're not going to pressure you. We want you to know that whatever you choose, we will always love you no matter what," Damon stated. It was truly hard to say that because he needed to let go and let Becca choose for her own path. He knew he couldn't force her.
"Becca, please think about it carefully. I know it's hard, but consider this as a second chance. I know it's different and your life is going to change once you decide to complete the transition, but please make a wise choice. We love you Becca and nothing's ever going to change that," Elena told her and pecked a kiss on her forehead.
Becca smiled at both of her parents. "Thanks," she said genuinely. Becca had never felt so loved in her entire life. She spread out her arms and brought Damon and Elena into a three-way hug. "I love you Mom, Dad," Becca said.
"We love you more sweetie," Damon and Elena replied almost at the same time.
"Alright... So... We're going to leave you alone to think and we hope you make a wise decision. I believe in you Becca," Damon said next, standing up.
He pecked a kiss Becca on her forehead, grabbed Elena's hand, and together they walked out the room. He shot an encouraging, warm smile to Becca before closing the door of her room.
Becca took a breath profusely. She stared at the mug full of blood which was placed on her nightstand, considering whether she should drink it or not. She got a second thought about ending her life once and for all after what her parents said to her.
Becca was facing a dilemma within herself. On one hand, she felt like her life was full of pain and sorrow and she was so sick of it. She wanted the pain to end. On the other hand, after the moment with Damon and Elena, she realized that she still had people who cared about her and she didn't want to disappoint them any further. Also, Becca knew they would help her get through tough times. She could survive with their help, support, and love. She grabbed her pillow, buried her head on it and screamed out in frustration.
"What should I do?" she mumbled to herself, feeling bewildered.
She laid down on her bed, starring at her ceiling absentmindedly. She took her time and listed up the pros and cons of both choices. She finally sat back up on her bed after about two hours of thinking and glanced at the mug. "Do I really want to be a vampire and live for eternity?" she asked herself.
"But if that's what I decide, then I need to stay strong to get through everything... What if I can't do it?" she murmured.
"Of course you can," replied the voice in her head. Becca needed a few seconds to realize she was imagining Damon said that to her.
She reached out and grabbed the mug in her hand. She stared at the crimson blood inside the mug. Then she remembered what Damon said to her before leaving her room; 'I believe in you'.
Then, like a flash of small pieces of flashbacks, she remembered numerous times when Damon and Elena said 'I love you, Becca' and when they hugged her and smiled at her. Then she realized she didn't want to lose that. She smiled and drank the human blood from the mug without any hesitation.
