Chapter 124 

“Edith, have many days have you skipped meals? Or my family treat you so bad that we don’t even allow you to eat?” Carlos said helplessly. Even he didn’t notice how he doted on her. 

Edith stuffed a medium–cooked steak chunk into her mouth and said, “Uncle Carlos, you must haven’t gotten hungry when you were a little boy. When I first lived with the Meyer family, there was only a nanny taking care of me and Vanessa. Since I was not a Meyer, she was mean to me. Even if we all got toys, I had to give mine to Vanessa if she wanted. And I had to squat in a corner and watched her play them. 

The same goes for food. I always had the scraps from Vanessa’s table. If she had a good appetite, I would get less to cat. My uncle–in–law was busy with his work and got no time to pay attention to us. Besides, Vanessa was healthy, and he had nothing to complain about. Perhaps due to that experience, I’m happy when I see food. 

“And don’t you think food has a healing ability? When you’re starving, don’t you feel very happy if you get something to eat? It gives me a sense of achievement to cook. I’m a good cook. I’ve learned how to make wine–glazed steak because I heard that Simon loved it. But I haven’t made it for him after so many days,” she said lengthily. 

Hearing her story, Carlos found it hard to imagine what she had suffered in the past. 

She lived with her relative’s family. It didn’t take a genius to know that she wouldn’t have led a good life back then. 

Despite that, she had become an excellent adult. She was kind and treated others sincerely. 

“I like that too,” he said in a soft voice. 

“Uncle Carlos, come over tonight. I’ll make it for you,” she invited as her eyes lit 

up 

with elation. 

“Okay. I’ll pick you up when you get off work. Don’t turn off your phone. Call me back if you get my call. Text me back when you receive my message. You understand?” he said in a domineering manner. 

Edith pouted her mouth. She was unhappy with his words, but she didn’t dare defy him. So she nodded her head in agreement 

After lunch, he dropped her off at her company. When she got off, she met several people from work. 

When they saw her get out of a luxury car, they looked at her either in an envious or a disdainful way. 

It was only then that she realized that people would gossip when they saw her get so close to Carlos under such a circumstance. 

However, there was nothing she could do now. 

She remade her work and drew it before she continued on a drawing digital tablet. After she got all this done, she was exhausted. So, she went to the break room. 

As soon as she reached the door, she heard the heated discussion coming from inside. 

“I knew that something was going on when Sarah gave her the job. She became a fashion designer without experiencing an internship or starting as an assistant fashion designer. She is a newcomer but she gets the same salary as we old ones! 

“Didn’t you 

notice? She is the one who gots all the orders from Mr. Britton’s girlfriend. She must have gotten a lot of commission. I’ve long suspected that she is sleeping with Mr. Britton. Otherwise, why would she get such special treatment? 

“I bet she is not only involved with Mr. Britton. She has many tricks. When I was on the way for lunch, I saw her standing with another man. He looked like a halfbreed and was so cute. He touched her head and smiled at her. They looked intimate. But as soon as he left, she got into another man’s car. The man drove her back. She just got out of his luxury car,” 

one said. 

Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! She is hitting on three men? How does she manage to not give herself away?” the other said in surprise and 

disbelief. 

‘She looks pure, but in fact, she is scheming. 1 feel sorry for Sarah. That woman has such resources. Sarali can’t be her match. We’re going to select the best employee of this season. Sarah is the best among us, and she has done a great job int sales in the past six months. But she got fierce competition. I figured that someone set that woman up because she was unhappy with what she did. Too bad that it ended like this. That woman is so lucky,” the first one said with sarcasm. 

She wished that Edith’s reputation could be ruined. 

Outside the door, Edith who had overheard them tightened her grip around the cup hard. 

Suddenly, someone patted her on the shoulder. 

She hurriedly turned around and saw Sarah. 

“Sarah?” Edith uttered. 

“Don’t listen to them. They’re lying through their teeth. They make it sound like they are righteous. But in fact, they’re just getting envious. If they had some rich guy on their side, they would wake up laughing.” Sarah said. 

Edith felt much better. At least there was someone siding with her. 

“Sarah, I won’t take that award from you. You did better than me in sales,” she said. 

“Rest assured. No one can take away what should be mine. Don’t listen to their bullshit. We’ve known each other for so many years. We studied abroad together and had the same specialty. We even came back and work together. Do you think I’m such a petty woman? I might get you wrong if you didn’t say those things, Sarah said rolling her eyes at Edith. 

She was annoyed that Edith didn’t have faith in her. 

Edith was touched as she hugged Sarah. 

“You’re the best, Sarah!” she said. 

When Sarah heard this, there was a fleeting mocking look in her eyes. 

“Did Carlos come over to have lunch with you?” she asked, patting her on the back gently. 

“Yes, I bet everyone in the company knows about it,” Edith said in low spirits. 

“I think that he is really nice to you. He is way, way out of Simon’s league. No one can be on par with him in Caurtine. He’s such an excellent man. You don’t have any feelings for him?” Sarah said. 

A thought came to her. 

She… she didn’t have any feelings for him? 

Of course, it was impossible. 

Carlos was good–looking, tall and well–built. He was the most handsome man she had ever seen. He stood out among the crowd, and women would fall for him at first sight. 

Moreover, he was really good to her. He had gotten her out of difficult situations several times. 

He had gotten her out of an embarrassing spot at Vanessa’s wedding. He had saved her from Elvis. He had taken her home yesterday. Besides those, he had also done her many small favors. 

This man always appeared out of nowhere when she needed help. Although he always pulled a long face, his words could always touch her. 

Having had so many memorable moments with him, she did have some feelings for him. However, what she felt about him, 

wasn’t enough to be a reason to talk her into letting her guard down and going out with him. 

Johann had caused her so much pain. 

They had gotten into a relationship in her sophomore year in high school, and they broke up when she graduated from college. Their relationship lasted five to six years, and it ended up being for nothing. 

Those were the best years of women. 

She had loved him wholeheartedly, and she still couldn’t get out of it. If she got betrayed again, she would never be able to pull herself together. 

In low spirits, Edith shook her head and said, “I don’t have the courage to like him… He is even scarier than Johann.
