Chapter 25
Emma’s POV
Alex dropped me off at my house and swore that she would follow me to work. I looked up at the sky, seeing the faint outline of her soaring above. I smiled to myself and jumped into my truck to begin the journey into town.
It’s going to feel so nice to have a normal day for once.
I drove past the fields, watching as the cattle grazed through the grass. A few calves were wandering around the herd as well.
When all this is over, it would be nice to get a few cows again like when my parents were here. Maybe even a horse so I can go riding again.
Faster than I wanted to, I pulled around to the back of the general store. I jumped out of my truck and tied on my brown apron as I walked up to the back door. A note was stick to the door in Andy’s messy writing:
Emma,
I am out sick for the day. I am sorry to leave you to put away this week’s shipment all alone. I promise I will make it up to you with a cup of coffee.
-Andy
I ripped off the note and folded it into my pocket. I grabbed my keys out and unlocked the door. Inside, I found tons of boxes stacked high in the back room.
Ugh… We had a big shipment too.
“I can come over and help if you need me to.”
°Oh no you don’t, Alex. This is my day off from crazy angel stuff. I can do my own work just fine.°
I could feel her frustration from not being with me but she will just have to deal with it for the day. I rolled up the sleeves of my flannel and began moving a few of the boxes into the store. I looked at the clock seeing it was just about 6 a.m.
I have an hour to get all this put away then open up.
I sighed to myself and went to unpacking everything and stacking it up on the shelves. The hour seemed to go by fast and only half the boxes were unloaded.
I will do them later when no one is in the store.
I straightened out my back then opened up the store and threw some wood in the fireplace. It took about five minutes before I saw Mrs. Peterson’s car pull up out front. The old woman slowly walked in and the bell rang out as she closed the door behind her.
“Hello Mrs. Peterson, what can I get for you?”
She didn’t have her usual smile as she looked up to me, “Hello dreary, Andy ordered some medication for me. He said it would be in the back room.”
Medication?
“Is everything okay?”
She shook her head, “Mr. Peterson is ill. He told me the doctor down in Darby said not to worry. But you know me, I don’t trust any other doctors besides your parents and Mr. Peterson was always a stubborn one.”
I forgot there aren’t any doctors in this town… I guess they just never found a replacement after my parents.
I nodded, “Well I will go get that for you Mrs. Peterson.”
I went into the back room and grabbed a box that had recently come in. I recognized the meds instantly.
They give these to people who have cancer… the late stages too.
Does she know?
I went back out and handed her the box. She gave me a slight smile and reached for her purse, “How much do I owe you dear?”
I quickly shook my head, “No need, Mrs. Peterson. If Andy needs the money, which he probably won’t ask for it, I will pay him myself. You go home and make sure Mr. Peterson gets better.”
She engulfed me in a hug, “I will dear. Thank you and I will see you later.”
She then shuffled back out to her car and drove off. I went back behind the counter and put my head in my hands.
“What is wrong, Emma? I can feel you are sad.”
°I am fine Alex. I just want this shift to be over.°
“Well if it makes you feel any better Larus is helping me make apple pie for dessert tonight.”
°You are a lifesaver! Thank you!°
“Hello? Emma?”
I was startled by another voice so I lifted my head up. Sheriff Meagan and Deputy Hale were standing there, staring down at me. Meagan looked me over, “You good? You looked kind of startled there.”
I let out a breath, “Yeah I am perfect. I just had one of those moments where you zone out of the world for a bit… What can I do for you?”
Deputy Hale pulled out a folder, “We were wondering if you have seen this man around here. He was reported missing yesterday.”
He pulled out a picture and placed it on the counter in front of me. I glanced at it and had to stop myself from moving away as the angel from yesterday stared back at me.
Holy shit that is the angel that Alex killed.
