Chapter 9 - BUSINESS PARTNERS
"I'm sure he has a reason," I said with the sudden urge of thirst.
"But isn't that his ex-wife? Aren't you mad that he is secretly seeing her?"
"Secretly?" I laughed, shaking my head at her ridiculous comment. "I'm sure it's not like that, Kai, my husband wouldn't do such."
I defended myself even though I knew that he could since our marriage was loveless, and he was a man after all. While everyone thinks he is head over me, I know he isn't.
"Why don't you go and say something to him? I mean, since he isn't like that, and you trust him," Kylie said, I looked up at her, and our eyes locked in each other.
"That isn't necessary," I signaled to the waiter.
"Okay," Kylie said in a weak voice. A muscle in my jaw twitched as I immediately noticed how she narrowed her gaze back and forth at Kai and me.
"You know what, there's something I need to speak to him about," I stood up, adjusting my dress. Kylie's faded smile came back to life.
I turned around, walking towards Kai and Amelia. I couldn't mess up this one, I promised him I wouldn't do anything stupid. Amelia's eyes caught me instantly, and it wasn't a second, Kai turned in my direction. "Hey," I plastered a smile, regretting my decision to have coffee with Kylie.
"Love," Kai immediately spoke, getting up. My feet shuffled backward, visibly tensed.
I darted at Amelia and him. He side-glanced her. I lowered my gaze to the table and found papers, sitting carefully. There was an empty chair and a black leather bag sat comfortably on it.
"Oh, Amelia, Tiffany, my wife." Kai's arms wrapped around my shoulder, holding me dearly.
"Yesh, we met at the ranch, remember? Carter's ranch," Amelia said and looked at me with a sinister smile crawling its way up her cheek.
"Yeah, that's right, the wives club. It's surprising seeing you here. What are the odds?" I gazed up at her up and down. I watched a hint of bitterness creep into her eyes.
Amelia looked at Kai, and he leaned, whispering to me while I watched her glancing mockingly at me.
"Amelia and I signed a deal," Kai intoned.
My shoulders slumped. I cleared my throat quietly. My gaze narrowed to Kai, and I leaned closer, whispering to him.
"I was forced to come over," I said, pointing at Kylie, where Kylie and I sat. Kylie waved when our gaze found hers, and I stepped away, Kai's eyes accessed me hotly, but there was a hint of something I couldn't pinpoint. "Well, then, I'll leave you two,"
"Oh, thank you, Tiffany," Amelia said.
My feet paused. I looked at her. I remembered her comment on being in love with Kai. My eyes were holding hers, and my fingers tapped together nervously.
"Mrs Winson, Miss Foster," I said, my heart palpating with fear and excitement.
Her eyes shifted to Kai, but he had small smiles creeping his flushed cheeks from my side view.
My gaze never shifted from hers, and my shoulders were going rigid as I waited for her to accept my correction.
Amelia smiled. "It's Mrs Winson, Miss Foster. Since you're business partners and not friends with my husband, I suggest you address me that way. We aren't friends either."
Our glares deepened. As much as she expected Kai to say something. He never did. However, her cheeks began to redden from embarrassment.
"Mrs Winson?" The words came out in careful syllables. I inhaled quietly as a smile curved my lips.
I turned around and walked back to Kylie. Who looked interested in the next thing I was going to say, but I remained silent.
Curiosity washed through her as I finally signaled for the waiter with a bright smile.
"What did he say?" Kylie asked. She looked behind me and rasped. "Oh, lord, she is glaring. She looks mad. What did you say to her? What happened?" Her questions were rushed.
"Oh, they signed a deal." Kyle stared at me in a peculiar manner. "Your husband's ex-wife and your husband are business partners?"
I nodded, humming. "Yeah, what's wrong?" I finally looked up at her, and she shook her head, pleased, but it died down.
"That's an excuse. I think Amelia is out for your husband, the way she looks at him," Kylie said, staring at them while she sucked her teeth.
I nodded, staring at the menu. I wanted to go home as quickly as possible.
Our coffee date came to an end. I waved and said my goodbyes to her.
"Let's do this next time," I waved with every fiber in me, wanting to go home. Carter nodded.
I looked around for my car, but it was nowhere to be found. Suddenly, a car stopped in front. And the door opened, Kai stepped out, and my eyes bulged, looking around. Where was Amelia?
As I scrutinized the area, I didn't realize Kai was opening the car door for me.
"I'm going home. You need a ride, love?" I blinked, narrowing my gaze.
I smiled and walked further to him. "There's no one here,"
"Does it look like I give a fuck? I told your driver to leave, so you have no other choice but to go home with me, Princess."
"I can take the bus," I said, teasing him. But the softened look on his face turned dark and cold.
"Get in the car, Tiffany," goosebumps hugged me, and my knees weakened. I gulped hard and lowered my gaze, getting into the car. He took my bag from me and closed the car door once I had successfully gotten in. Kai placed my bags in the back seat, and I watched him get into the car. My heart was racing, and the heat from my chest spread through my body. The car became too hot, and I looked away, staring out the window. There, I found Amelia staring at us. The car started, and Kai drove off. But her gaze followed the movement.
