Chapter 11 - THE CARING HUSBAND
"It's an honor to meet you also, Kylie tells me about you," I spoke, smiling, but his next question sent me speechless. "Oh, she does. What does she say?" He asked.
My eyes glued to his. I couldn't say a word. The heavy silence was kicking in, and I could feel everyone becoming silent. I glanced downwards, and a deep laugh thundered out of his throat.
"I'm just joking," Mr Carter said, and I immediately laughed, looking at Kylie. She shook her head slightly with a smile I wasn't sure of.
I narrowed my gaze to Kai, and he gasped in disbelief. I couldn't also pinpoint what just happened. But I don't want to believe I made a mockery of myself.
"Mr Carter. It's lovely to have you here," Amelia walked towards him in elegance, and her cold glares towards me were replaced with calm blankness.
"Oh," Mr Carter looked equally stunned. He blinked and looked back at me. I could immediately tell what he was thinking. I walked past him as I saw my phone ringing on the table we sat at. "Mrs... Amelia, what a pleasure to see you here today..."
Their words faded as I focused on what the director of Sun Nursing Home Dr Darcy - said:
"It's your mother, Tiffany. She keeps calling for you."
I looked back at the crowd I knew I couldn't escape from. I took a deep breath and turned around.
"It's the weekend tomorrow, I'm sure I can make it. Work has been hectic for me," I said, pushing strands of my hair behind my ear.
I felt a hand wrap around my waist, and a warm breath fanned against my neck, causing shivers to shoot up my spine.
"Is something wrong?" Kai said, hugging me from behind. His breath poured around my neck.
"Dr Darcy, can I call you back?" I lowered my eyes, gazing at my shoes. I hung up and turned around, looking at Kai, but his hands were wrapped around my waist, refusing to let me go.
"Doctor?" He asked.
I smiled. "Yeah, it's my mother," I said and shook my head. What was I doing in his arms so comfortable? I looked at his arms, and the suit he was wearing was up to his wrist, covering every muscle. His arms were strong and comfortable, and this made me feel butterflies. "What are you doing? This isn't necessary. Let me go," I snared, speaking through my gritted teeth while I tried to maintain a smile as a few eyes were fixed on us.
"If it wasn't necessary, you wouldn't be gritting," Kai spoke softly. He slouched closer to me and kissed my cheek, letting go of me, but his arms held mine. And escorted me to the crowd.
A while later, I sat in the family dining while the cooks served the dishes. The other wives had left, leaving Amelia, Kai, and me.
I looked at Amelia, who sat unbothered. "I don't know if this is comfortable for you. I mean, Amelia is Kai's,"
"Mr Carter, can we not get into that discussion," Kai said, cutting him short. But Amelia didn't look pleased.
My phone buzzed, and I looked down, opening the message. I saw five missed calls from Dr. Darcy and a text message.

Dr Darcy: Tiffany, I've been trying to reach you, but you need to be here now, your mother collapsed.
I dragged my chair, and my mind went blank for a while. I stared at everyone at the table and turned around, finding my way out of the dining. I remembered the entrance, but my brain wasn't working anymore. My mother had collapsed. "Tiffany! I want you to calm down," the voice echoed, and I was losing my breath, I felt a strong arm, hold me. "That's it, breathe in, breathe out."
I recognized the voice after a third recitement. I gazed around and found Kylie staring at me worriedly. My mother was all I had. How could she possibly leave me in his harsh world? She was my motivation.
"I think we would have a proper dinner another time, Mr Carter. It looks like something came up," Kai said.
He held me dearly, and I couldn't tell if he was acting or if he was real.
"If you excuse us," He said, and I felt his hands wrap around my waist while he helped me out of their mansion.
A black car parked in front, and Audrey stepped out, opening the car door. Kai helped me in. While I was still fazed, I needed to leave quickly. I need to see my mother.
"I'll drive," He said and took the keys from Audrey, walking over to the driver's seat.
"Kai! Wait, Kai, you can't just leave!" Amelia rushed over to the car, but the engine started.

He drove without even looking back. I looked at him, and the seriousness in his face amused me.
"You don't need to drive me," I gulped and sucked my lower lips.
"It's fine, it's your mother," He replied. His voice is soft and gentle, yet silence
I stared out the window, and my heart raced, I swallowed thickly as more liquid settled. My hands fiddled together. In no time, we both arrived at Sun Nursing Home. I couldn't wait, I opened the car door and got out, rushing into the building. I arrived at the reception. "I'm here for Miss Halton," the nurse looked very confused. However, she scanned the computer.
"Who are you to her? We'll need an ID," she spoke. I blinked and realized I wasn't with my phone or bag. The last memory I had was with them at the Carter's mansion.
"ID?" I gulped.
"Here, she's her daughter. Tiffany Halton," Kai said, handing my ID to her. The nurse looked at me and scanned it.
"Your mother is resting now. You can see her in her room," She said. I stormed, heading to her room when I remembered that my ID was still with the nurse.
I turned around and bumped into Kai. His chest felt so strong and broad. I gazed up at him, and he rolled his eyes.
"Move," He spat.
