Chapter 12 - YOUR MOTHER'S MAN.
"Your mother is fine. She fainted due to low iron. Do you want to wait for her to wake up? She's been calling for you."
I stared at Dr Darcy, who sometimes looked in Kai's direction while she spoke. Once our eyes met, I smiled.
"Yeah, I can," I replied.
A few minutes later, I sat on a couch staring at my mother. My roaring heart had calmed, seeing her sleep so perfectly.
The room was silent, and every second, I was reminded that Kai was sitting behind me. The reason why I was able to pay my mother's bill and the reason my only dream was loading. I was grateful to God for this opportunity, and I wondered how it would be if this all ended.
I sneakily looked behind me, and Kai was glued to his tablet. His fluffy dark hair covered his face, making it easy for me to stare without being noticed.
"Are you done staring?" He raised his head, and my heart skipped the moment our eyes met. He groaned, massaging his neck. "I'm sorry for the interruption, but I couldn't keep any longer. You can stare directly," His tone came with a hint of mockery.
"I wasn't staring," I said flatly.
I looked away, but I couldn't feel his gaze pouring over me, and the room was quiet again. I took my mother's hands, holding onto her and caressing it gently.
"You don't have to wait with me. You can go home," I said softly.
"I don't mind. I chose to stay."
I sighed and looked back in his direction, glaring at him. "You don't have to play perfect husband at my mother's sick bed. You can go home, cause I want to stay all night," "Sorry to burst your bubbles, but I chose to stay. You'll need something warm if you want to stay all night," Kai said, staring into my eyes. "I hate those glares."
Kai got up and gently took off his jacket, arranging it on the couch arm. My gaze followed him curiously as he walked out of the room, disappearing. However, he wasn't leaving. His tablet and jacket were on the couch where he sat. My lips twisted, and curiosity almost eating me up. Where did he go? Was he coming back?
I was starting to feel sleepy, sitting on the stool and waiting for my mom to wake up from her deep slumber. I yawned and lost count of how many times I did.
Just a moment. I encouraged myself, closing my eyes briefly. I heard the door slid open, and immediately I opened my eyes. Gosh, I was so exhausted from the whole drama today, I just needed some sleep.
"Yes, over there. Oh, Peter, you can drop those on the table. Ah, the blankets," Kai took them from a blond lady.
I frowned, confusion washing through me as I tried to understand what was going on. My hands slipped from my mother's, and I got up. A bed was dragged in, with pillows, foods, and blankets. "What's going on here?" I asked, tilting my head.
"Thank you, that's all," Kai said quietly. Everyone was leaving, and he wasn't explaining. Once they were gone, he shut the door quietly and handed a bag to me. They were warm and felt like food. "Kai?" I called.
"You'll need your strength once she wakes up. I don't think she would until tomorrow morning, why don't you eat, rest while you wait."
"What?" My frowns disappeared, and I looked at the food. The lid was transparent. "Shepherd pie?"
"Isn't that your favorite?" He asked, pushing a hand into his pocket. I gazed at the food and looked up at him. "You're welcome."
I was speechless, staring at him as he walked to his couch, sitting while he crossed his legs. He took his tablet and continued. When did he plan all these?
I darted at my mother and the bed beside hers. I bit my lower lips, flickering my long eyelashes as my mind contemplated on whether to accept all these gestures.
However, I sat on the bed. It was soft, my hands felt the blanket, and they were indeed warm. I looked at my mother, and a small smile inched my lips. I dropped the food and took the blankets exchanging hers for mine that were warmer. "Tiffany," Kai called, and I shrugged.
"Thank you, but my mother needs this more than I do," I replied. Kai exhaled, but I didn't mind. I opened the food, and my mouth began to water immediately. It smelt so good, and I wanted to rush it, but raising my gaze, I realized Kai was staring.
I gulped down the saliva building in my mouth. "You know, you didn't have to."
"You didn't have anything at the Carter's place. Eat up, you don't want it cold."
I nodded, about to take a bite, I inhaled the sweet aroma, finally putting it in my mouth. I exhaled quietly, shutting my eyes for a brief moment. God, it tasted sweet.
After devouring that shepherd's pie, I had no idea how I passed out. When I opened my eyes, the room was brighter than ever. Sunlight was pouring through the window, and my eyes immediately darted around and found Noami sitting and shaking her head relentlessly.
My gaze followed hers, and I saw a sight I never thought I would see. Kai was feeding my mother while she smiled wholeheartedly.
I jolted up, swallowing and wiping my mouth. "Oh, you're up?" Noami said, unbothered.
I looked at her and Kai, she dropped her bag and walked to me.
"I think your mother likes your husband," Noami said, I furrowed, eyeing her.
"What's going on?" My voice sounded hoarse. I cleared my throat as the dryness hit me.
"Here," she handed me a cup of water. I gulped on it before I could ask what was going on. "They've been together ever since she woke up."
It wasn't making sense. "How did you get here? When did you get here?" I looked at Noami, and her warm, loving eyes were glued to the miraculous sight I couldn't believe it either.
