I looked at the man I once deeply loved. Now, I only found him childish and pathetic. 

“Alfred, we’ve already broken up. My house has nothing to do with you, so of course I changed the lock,” I said. 

Alfred stared at me blankly and asked how long I intended to make a scene. He even said that if I hadn’t gone to his house and caused a fuss, his parents wouldn’t have known anything, so why make a big deal out of it? 

“Laraine, Marleen just wants a wedding. Why are you being so stubborn and making such a fuss? Aren’t you afraid of karma?” Alfred asked me angrily, his tone harsh.

I felt I needed to seriously talk to him one more time. 

“Alfred, whether Marleen wants a wedding or genuinely wants to marry you, that’s between you and her. What does that have to do with me? If you want to fulfill her wish and help her, that’s your business. There’s no need for you to guilt–trip me. 

And I’ve made it very clear that we are broken up. Just because I know you, do I have to help a dying person for free? There’s no law that says a

I knew my words were harsh and unpleasant. 

Alfred cursed, but didn’t leave immediately. Instead, he lit a cigar, which was very unlike him. 

I slowly sew on a button, not wanting to pay any more attention to him. 

After he finished his cigarette, he asked, 

“Laraine, where did you buy that ring, and how much did they cost?” 

At that moment, I realized Marleen still hadn’t given up on my ring.

set,” I said. “The diamond of this level of grade costs $700,000, and the setting cost over fifty thousand.” 

Alfred seemed stunned for a moment and asked, “That expensive? Where did you get the money? How come I didn’t know?”

“Mr. Walker, where I got the money is none of your concern,” I said with a calm smile. “If you have nothing else, stop disturbing me. Your Marleen doesn’t have much time left; you’d better spend it with her.”

In the evening, Alfred’s mother Joan suddenly called me, asking to rent my wedding dress and jewelry for $30,000. What she said was almost identical to Alfred’s. 

“Laraine, Marleen’s condition is so grave now; she’ll only use them for one day and won’t damage your things. Besides, we’ll be family soon, right? Your things are just Alfred’s things. 

I laughed sarcastically and said, “Aunt Joan, Alfred and I have broken up. I’ve returned the $100,000 and I don’t need that $30,000. I won’t lend or rent out my wedding dress or jewelry. Let Alfred buy them for Marleen instead. After all, when he marries someone new in the future,
