Chapter 6

Chapter 06

I had been with Alfred for several years, so I had some understanding of Joan’s personality; she cared a lot about reputation.

It was she who insisted that the wedding be held at a seven–star hotel, saying that since he was her only son, the wedding had to be grand and impressive.

To me, marriage was a lifetime commitment, and I also wanted a grand wedding.

However, during the preparations for booking the hotel, she kept finding excuses for why the money wasn’t enough and asked me to cover the costs, always saying, “Laraine, you cover it first, and I’ll have Alfred pay you back later.”

In reality, she lacked the ability to manage and had high expectations but little capability.

Though Joan’s intentions weren’t bad, my harsh words were meant to urge her to get Alfred to abandon this absurd and beyond–his–means plan to help Marleen. Marleen’s actions were clearly insincere.

Yet neither Alfred nor his mother listened to my warnings. Though I didn’t pry into their affairs, I still learned that Alfred was making a big show of preparing for the wedding.

Originally, I had paid the full amount for the hotel. The hotel told me they couldn’t refund the full amount, only two–thirds. I agreed to that. But then Alfred stepped in and insisted on

holding the banquet as planned.

When the hotel called, I was at a loss. Before I could even hang up, Alfred called me-

“Laraine, has the hotel been in touch with you?” Alfred asked.

I smiled and told him that if he wanted to keep the reservation, he needed to pay me the full payment. Why should I cover the costs for his and Marleen’s wedding banquet?

“Laraine, do you only care about money?” Alfred asked impatiently over the phone.

“Alfred, your wedding banquet has nothing to do with me. Are you asking me to pay for it?” I sneered. “I’m your ex–girlfriend, not your

mother. You’d better get that straight.”

“I’ll transfer the money to you in a few days,” Alfred said, impatiently ending the call.

With that, there was nothing more for me to say.

After being with him for so long, we had mutual friends, and soon I saw in our mutual friends‘ group chat that he was asking about diamond.

He planned to spend money on diamond

jewelry for Marleen, asking for pieces similar to my ring.

A bunch of people were giving him advice, and some even tagged me.
