Boyfriend’

Chapter ’ 4

Chapter 04

Clearly, Marleen was reluctant. She turned, tears streaming down her face.

“Laraine, just let me borrow them for a few days. Soon, I won’t have any more opportunities to wear them…” she said pitifully.

“No!” I spat out the words through gritted teeth.

Having decided to break up with Alfred, I didn’t want any further entanglements with him or her. Naturally, I wouldn’t lend her my things either.

Alfred looked at Marleen with pity, his tone filled with resolute hatred, and said, “Laraine, I never thought you could be so heartless. You want to

break up, fine. You can keep the $100,000, and the ring is mine.”

Saying this, he tried to leave with Marleen again.

I blocked their way and said sarcastically, “Mr. Walker, I’ll return the $100,000, but leave my ring and necklace behind.”

“$100,000? That’s not even enough to buy half a bracelet,” I added.

Alfred cursed at me, saying I was being petty and vindictive.

Under my insistence, Marleen left behind the ring and the bracelet.

After they left, I began packing, taking stock

of the things Alfred had given me during our relationship. The more I counted, the colder my heart felt.

Alfred’s family was well–off, but over the years we were together, he had never given me anything of real value. Some things that seemed romantic had actually been very low–cost.

I found a storage box and gathered his belongings, including his clothes and other items left at my place.

Then, I called my mother.

My breakup with Alfred came as a shock to her.

mother worked hard to raise me and never considered remarrying. Now, her greatest wish was for me to find someone I could spend my life with, but just as the wedding was about to take place, we were breaking up.

I recounted the whole story to her over the phone. She was furious but agreed with my decision. If Alfred could agree to such an absurd request from Marleen, there would be no happiness for me in the future if I stayed with him.

I told my mother to notify our relatives and friends that the wedding was canceled.

I personally called Alfred’s parents. They were also opposed to this ridiculous situation and advised me to look at things differently and

not to hold grudges against a dying person. However, I firmly rejected their attempts at reconciliation and returned the $100,000 Alfred had given me.

The next day, I specifically asked my cousin to accompany me to return Alfred’s belongings. His parents tried to persuade me again, but I just

shook my head.

I thought, if Alfred wants to play a

“life–and–death romance” drama with Marleen,

to move himself or anyone else, it has nothing to do with me anymore.

But what I didn’t expect was that a week later, Alfred suddenly came looking for me, asking why I had changed the lock on the door of our wedding house.

Since Alfred started his own business right after graduation, investing and partnering with friends to start a company, my mother had put all her savings into buying us a house when we were preparing to get married.

The house, bought in full by my family, was my pre–marital property. No matter how foolish or love–struck I might have been, I wouldn’t put Alfred’s name on it. Naturally, I had given him a key to come.

Now that we had broken up, I naturally changed the lock.
