Chapter 34
“Hello to you too, little man.”
Damien heard a soft chuckle behind him and turned to see Anastasia. His mouth dropped. She was wearing a formal suit that fit tightly around her hips and ass. Her blouse was red and her pair of red heels went perfectly with her clothes, He stared at her for a few moments too long.
“Oh, wow,” he breathed.
Ana smirked. “Alan, baby, let go of Damien’s legs.”
Damien felt him shake his head no. Damien bent down before grabbing his arms, lifting him into the air, and then setting
him on his forearm.
“No?” Damien asked, sticking his finger in between Alan’s ribs and tickling. Alan squealed.
“Getting off work early?”
“Not in the slightest. I was going to get some food. You look nice. What are you dressed. up
“Meeting with Simon”
Who the hell is Simon?‘ Damien thought.
“My boss,” Ana clarified quickly as if she could read his mind.
“I was
going
for?
10 make dinner tonight. Do you want to come over?” Damien asked nervously. He was not sure if he was pushing the boundaries of their arrangemen
“We can’t make it. We have plans tonight.”
Damien cocked his head at her but didn’t ask. He didn’t need to.
“We’re going to make a fire!” Alan chirped from his perch on his arm.
“A fire?”
“Yeah, a few colleagues are meeting up for a barbeque and bonfire,” Ana explained. “We thought we should meet the new people officially.”
Damien chuckled. “That seems like a good plan. Have fun.” Damien set Alan down and Anastasia reached for his hand.
“Bye, Damien.” she said. Alan waved and followed his mother. As they walked out, Damien’s eyes zoomed in on Ana’s backside. He felt himself grow agitated. He grabbed his food and coffee and paid.
It had become apparent that he had feigned indifference all these years. The anger and resentment he felt for Anastasia over the last month had been a mask for his old feelings. And he was in a lot of trouble if he couldn’t hold himself back.
Saturday morning, Anastasia arrived at the park with Alan and found Damien standing by the bench. He turned just in turn to catch Alan, who was jumped with a wide grin. Damien swung him around the air once before setting him down and letting him run to the slide.
“Good morning,” Damien chirped.
Ana lifted her brow but couldn’t keep the simile off her face. “Don’t you have to work?”
“I am the boss. I can take weekends off.” He reached down and picked up a coffee that was sitting on the bench. “I got you

coffee.”
“How do you know what I drink?” Ana teased.
“Trust me, Ana, you will like it.” His confident smirk made her roll her eyes. Still, she took a tentative sip. She closed her eyes as the sweetness hit her tongue. She hummed happily and licked the foam that had leaked out of the lid. What a nice way to start her day
“Thank you,” she almost moaned. When she opened her eyes. Damien looked like he was about to eat her. And he was so close. Ana could feel the warmth of his body and the spark of being near him.
Damien’s mouth parted and his jaw was set. Ana had to turn away, unable to stand him looking at her like that. Ana took a step back and looked around to see where Alan had gone.
Damien gasped and pulled her face back. “What happened to your eye?” He scowled.
Ana groaned. “Don’t ask.”
Damien’s face darkened and his eyes narrowed. He took a step towards her and she flinched as his hands shot out toward him. He stopped abruptly, his hand freezing mid–air and his eyes shifted to meet hers. He slowly reached his hand and grabbed her chin. turning her face to carefully examine her bruised side.
Ana swallowed audibly, licked her bottom lip, and waited for his verdict. Damien’s hand was gentle and warm. His thumb. brushed over her cheekbone as he asked. “Anastasia, did someone hit you?”
Ana laughed, still not understanding his seriousness. “No. Someone did kick me, though.”
Damien’s jaw tensed. He looked pissed and for the life of her, Ana couldn’t figure out why.
“I’m going to kill the fucker,” he growled in a low, threatening voice.
Ana’s eyes widened. “What?” And then she finally understood. “Oh my god, Damien.. Alan! It was Alan.”
“Sorry?”
“Alan…. our son. He kicked me in the face when he had a nightmare.”
Damien visibly relaxed.
“Who did you think it was?” she asked. Damien didn’t laugh though. He scratched his chin awkwardly instead. “Damien?”
“I thought I don’t know… the guy.”
Ana frowned. “What guy?”
“That Marcus dude,” he mumbled.
“How do you know about Marcus?” Ana asked, completely stunned. She hadn’t told him yet.
Damien’s face crunched up as he responded. “Your mom told me when Alan was in the hospital. Wynne told me bits and
pieces too.”
“Oh
“So, he didn’t hit you?” he asked again.
“You really don’t know Marcus. He could never hurt me,” Ana scoffed. She noticed a flash in Damien’s eyes, but he masked it quickly.
“Oh. Is he your boyfriend, then?”

Ana didn’t know how to answer that question “Damien.. I don’t think I feel comfortable speaking about these things with you.” She knew how the friendship between Marcus and her would sound. And if Marcus had been right, Damien wouldn’t understand.
She really didn’t want to get into an argument with him and lose all the progress he had made.
“Why not?”
She looked at him incredulously. “Are you really going to ask that?”
Damien nodded.
“I’ll tell you another time.”
“Damien, will you play wif me?” Alan interrupted before Ana could say anything else.
“Sure, kiddo,” Damien smiled.
“Mamma, you too?”
Ana groaned, making Damien chuckle. “Yes, Mamma… please?” he teased, clasping his hand together and mimicking Alan. Ana shoved his shoulder. Damien winked at her with a crooked smile.
That smile! It made her weak in the knees from the moment she laid eyes on him. He knew what that smile did to her and every other person who came across him. Ana forced herself to ignore it.
