Chapter Benson 298

Chapter 298: Silent Vigil

Jeremy sat on the chair beside Yvonne’s hospital bed, the faint glow of his phone illuminating his handsome face. He was handling work messages while occasionally glancing over at

Yvonne.

She was lying on her side, one arm unintentionally slipping out from under the blanket. Her wrist looked delicate and pale, giving off an air of fragility.

Jeremy put down his phone, quietly stood up, and gently tucked her hand back under the blanket, moving with such tenderness as if he feared disturbing her dreams.

As he watched her peaceful sleeping face, an indescribable feeling welled up in his heart.

Her expression in sleep was so calm, even carrying a hint of childlike innocence.

But he knew that inside, she was far from at peace.

After all she had been through, there was a weariness and vulnerability about her that she couldn’t completely hide.

It stirred within him an overwhelming desire to protect her, to share in the pain she had been bearing alone.

He quietly returned to his chair, his gaze still resting on her, his mind filled with a whirlwind of thoughts.

Jeremy’s fingers lightly brushed over his phone screen, but in the end, he set it aside, leaning back in the chair and staring up at the ceiling.

His thoughts surged like a tide, impossible to quell. He tried to sort through his feelings, but the more he tried, the more confused he

became.

Yvonne’s fragility and strength, her determination and uncertainty- everything about her filled him with complex emotions.

He tried to calm himself, but no matter hat, he couldn’t completely relax.

His gaze grew deep, making it hard to tell what he was thinking. He knew he was already in too deep, unable to extricate himself.

Meanwhile, in another city, Benson was also struggling to find

peace.

After arriving in South City, the first thing he did was pick up his phone and dial Yvonne’s number.

But all he got was the cold, automated message that her phone was turned off.

His heart sank. Yvonne rarely turned off her phone, and this habit

made him uneasy.

In the stillness of the night, her phone being off made him feel particularly unsettled.

Benson stood by the floor–to–ceiling window of his hotel room, the night outside reflecting on the glass like a hazy canvas.

He lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and slowly exhaled, the smoke blurring his vision.

Anxiety and unease gripped his heart like invisible hands.

He repeatedly dialed Yvonne’s number, but there was no response.

The constant message that her phone was off seemed to echo

aminously in his mind

He was on the verge of losing control, but all he could do was

stand helplessly by the window, letting the unresolved tension

churn inside him.

Knowing that Yvonne was traveling with Jeremy only added to his doubts in the middle of the night.

Yvonne and Jeremy, alone together in a foreign country–the

thought gnawed at him, and his jealousy and pain surged like never

before

He couldn’t bear to imagine what might be happening between

them.

Whenever he pictured her delicate form being held by Jeremy, kissed and comforted, the image felt like a knife slicing through his

heart.

He had never considered himself a possessive man, believing in the freedom of the body, as long as no one was hurt. But now, that belief brought him no comfort.

He realized that he couldn’t accept it, couldn’t bear the thought of her being with someone else.

The pain was like a blade, cutting deeper with every thought, driving him to the brink of madness.

He thought this must be jealousy, but he refused to admit it because he knew that once he did, there would be no turning back.

The night grew deeper, the lights outside gradually dimmed, and the city fell into silence.

But Benson’s mind couldn’t calm down. He felt as if his world was

collapsing around him, and there was nothing he could do to stop

  1. it.

He slumped on the sofa, the cigarette in his hand long burned out, but he didn’t notice. His gaze remained vacant, staring out the window.

His clothes were wrinkled from sitting, but he didn’t care, feeling as though he were suffocating under the weight of his invisible pain.

For some reason, Benson suddenly remembered something Maria had once said.

There was a time when he had bought a precious brooch for Mary at an auction, and the servant said she had sat in the living room all night.

The media had speculated he was proposing, but he hadn’t returned home that night.

Now, he finally understood what that felt like, the agony of wanting to die yet being unable to.

He realized that Yvonne’s insistence on divorce hadn’t come from nowhere. The pain was more despairing than he had ever

imagined.

Morning sunlight filtered through the hospital room window, softly illuminating Yvonne’s face.

She slowly opened her eyes, still a bit groggy from sleep, and her vision gradually cleared to reveal Jeremy’s figure.

He was standing by the window, holding a bag of breakfast, with some newly bought toiletries beside him.

Noticing that she was awake, he turned to her, his eyes filled with

concern.

Yvonne slowly leaned back against the headboard, rubbing her sleepy eyes, a faint, wry smile tugging at her lips. It seems you always catch me at my worst.”

Her voice carried a mix of helplessness and gratitude.

She recalled the time in St. George, that sudden accident, and now

this latest scare.

Fate seemed to bring Jeremy to her side every time she was at her

weakest.

Jeremy walked over to her bedside, gently placing the breakfast on the small table, his gaze lingering on her slightly pale cheeks.

There was a hint of reproach in his tone. “You keep giving me more scares. Are you trying to frighten me to death?”

Yvonne smiled faintly, touching her nose to hide the emotion welling up inside her. “Jeremy, thank you.

She knew that without him, she might have been completely lost in this crisis, perhaps even losing the child she hadn’t yet fully accepted.

Jeremy shook his head gently, smiling softly. “Thank yourself. After all, it’s quantum entanglement. What you believe becomes reality.”

He spoke in a light–hearted tone to ease her anxiety, hoping she wouldn’t feel too guilty.

Yvonne couldn’t help but laugh at his words. “You’re the one who gave me strength, yet you’re so humble about it?

Her smile was filled with gratitude, and it felt as if the fatigue and worry of the past days had melted away in that moment.

“Eat something first, my lady. You’ll need your strength to keep talking,” Jeremy said, handing her the breakfast tray. His tone was teasing but firm, leaving no room for refusal.

He knew she was still weak and needed to take care of herself.

Yvonne took the tray and slowly sat up, feeling a lingering unease but under Jeremy’s watchful eyes, she began to eat.

She took small bites, even though her stomach still felt uneasy, and she forced herself to keep eating.

She knew she had to regain her strength to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As Jeremy tidied up her things, he occasionally glanced at her.

Each time he turned back, Yvonne would smile at him, a smile that carried both resilience and gratitude.

Seeing her smile, Jeremy felt a warmth spread through his heart.

He reached out and gently touched her hair, his voice soft. “Stop, looking around and focus on eating.”
