It’s my third day here and my days are pretty similar. I’m working in the archives looking for any information that can help me to see things more clearly. How do you do to only poison the Alpha? For sure, you need to be close and to have his trust. You also have to have access to a lot of information for doing that...

When I’m not trying to understand the situation, I have to manage the members' problems which are pretty diverse. They didn’t change their patrols' rotation even if they tried to make me believe they will. But I don’t care it’s their safety, not mine. If the fact their Alpha was poisoned is not enough for them to question their way, I don’t know what they need. Of course, they are the strongest pack in the world but they have too much pride and confidence in themselves which is dangerous.

For lunch, I return to my cabin. When I’m not with Alpha Franck, I’m following by the Gamma. I learned it’s Collin and he is not the one that insulted me. He is cold and never speak to me. Expect for the complaints from the pack’s member, I don’t have any contact with anybody.

What about the betas, my parents and my brother... They avoid me as the pledge. They didn’t have any news from me for 9years and 2 months, still, they have nothing to say. Every time we met the last few days they looking at me the wrong way. If they miss me they are good to hide it. I can’t say I’m surprised but it still pains me... I learn that my brother found his mate - Elena - 7 years ago. They have two kids, Kaiden (5 years in a few days) and Julia (10 months). They don’t present me to them and of course, if I approach one of them, Aiden will kill me. I think it’s the only words he told since I’m here.

I arrive at my place, after another boring day. I don’t know where is the gamma. Normally I can see him. It’s not as he is hiding, he is sitting in front of my door. This is stupid, I still can sneak by the window in the bathroom or my bedroom if I want.

I’m cooking a Quiche Lorraine when I heard a baby cried. Where that come from? I start to look in the wood the house when I see Collin with a tiny baby in his arms. She is a little girl. Goddess, she is so beautiful. I started to walk toward him I want to hug her. But he backs away and growls at me.

“She is mine, don’t touch here!” Someone is aggressive.

“Relax, I don’t mean any harm to her. She is so beautiful! What is her name?” I say trying to calm him.

“Harper.”

“Hello Harper, why are you crying little angel!” He lets me approach them this time.

“Why is she with you? Does her mother can’t keep her?”

“There is no mother. Normally when I’m working she is staying with my parents but tonight they can’t, my brother and his mate are there.”

“Why didn’t you ask for someone to replace you in this case?”

“Because I need to focus on something else. But she is crying and she doesn’t want to calm down. She is not hungry, I changed her diaper, she doesn’t want to sleep. I don’t know what to do anymore.”

He looks like a mess but I don’t think it’s only because of her cries. But I will not dig, it’s his life and it’s not like we used to be friends.

“ May I try. Please!”

He finishes by giving her to me.

“ Hello princess, calm down you are safe here.” I say, balancing her. After a few minutes, she calms down.

“How? I tried everything for the last hour...”

“What can I say I’m good with babies! I’m kidding. How old is she?

“Seven weeks tomorrow.”

“Something is bothering you-”

“That’s not your business” he cuts me.

“Let me finish. I will not ask you what’s going on but at this age, babies are emotional sponges. She is feeling it that why she won’t calm down with you. Go run if you need, I keep her.”

“No!”

“ Fine, you want to take her back?”

“I can’t leave you.”

“In this case, run around the house. We will be inside.”

He leaves a few seconds to come back with her bag. “There is everything inside, the diapers are here, and her bottle is here.”

“ No worries, I will manage.”

An hour later, he is knocking at my door.

“You can use the bathroom if you want to. There are clean towels below the sink.”

“ Where is she?”

“Sleeping in my bed, the first door in the left on the first floor. Don’t wake up her.”

After fifteen minutes, he is coming back.

“Thank you! The run helps.”

“ You’re welcome. Sit and eat dinner with me. “

“ I don’t know if it’s a good idea...”

“ I don’t see why not. I will not poison your food as we will eat the same dish. And you are still watching me so you still doing your job. I won’t even serve you alcohol as you are in duty.”

“ Alright... And I’m hungry after this run.”

“ What’s that?” He asks me while I serve him a slice of the pie.

“ Quiche Lorraine. It’s french”

He tastes it and says: ”It’s so good. Wow!!!”

“Where did you learn to cook?”

“ I kind of date a chef for 6 months...”

“ Kind of?”

“ Well, we were more friends with benefits than anything else. Though I benefited more from his cooking....”

“ So he was your fuck buddy?”

“ Hey, watch your tongue! He was supposed to be but he was more a cooking buddy in the case.”

“ Don’t play the innocent now.” he says laughing.

“Oh believe me I’m not! You just need to be careful of your words with Harper. You should start now if not, don’t be surprised to scream Fuck all though the pack’s house.”

“ I have time.”

“ If you think so...”

“How did you accept Liam's rejection?” He suddenly asks me, surprising me.

“I was expecting it so I think it was easy. Also, I left so I didn’t have to face him.”

“ My mate, she rejected me for my brother...”

And like that he tells me his and Harper’s story. Normally Harper stays with his parents but tonight they can’t because Connor and Piper are there for dinner. My heart breaks for them. He doesn’t know what to do with Harper, He feels guilty because she doesn’t have any mother and he thinks it’s his fault. He doesn’t even realize how brave he is. I hug him before slapping him on the back of his head.

“Hey, what was that for.”

“For being stupid!”

“What?”

“ I don’t even know where to start. Firstly it’s not your fault Piper abandoned her. You should be proud of you because you man up, you took your responsibilities and you keep moving for Harper. Secondly, Piper is not your mate. No, let me explain. Identical twins share a special bond and both can feel each other mate pull. They though the mate pull to be stronger between them. The truth is it was stronger because they are true mate. When you will meet your true mate, you will understand. But YOUR mate is still somewhere.”

“Are you sure? How do you know that?”

“ I’m reading a lot and ... I met another pair of identical twins and their mateS. If you don’t trust me I advise you to read the book “Atypical werewolf and their place”. The author speaks about twins in a chapter. ”

“Why? How is it possible?”

“ The theory is twins wolves are to born when it needed as in a difficult or dangerous time. They can feel the mate pull with their twin mate in the case one them die, they still have a chance of love and to have children. You should read that book, it will explain that much better than me. I will order it online for you.”

“ Wow, wow... I didn’t expect that. That means I still have a chance of happiness. There is still hope for me.”

“ Hey I was rejected by my mate but I have a happy life!” Faking my anger.

“Thank you Anna-Lynn! That means the world for me and my wolf. Thank you to not pity me like everyone else.”

“ It’s normal. I’m going to bed. Do you mind if I sleep with Harper? There is another room ready, second door on the right on the first floor.”

“ Sure. I may go sleep a bit too, thanks. By the way, all of this doesn’t mean we are friends but I’m okay with you now.”

“ Better than nothing! I will take it! Night Collin.”

“You are something else. Good night Anna-Lynn.”

“You’re good with her. It looks like you used to live with children.” Collin tells me while we are eating breakfast.

“ I have a son.”

“Wow, I didn’t expect that. Where is the father if I may ask?”

“Dead, as his real mother. I promised them I will take of him if something happened to them and it’s exactly what I am doing. He is 7 and his name is Duncan. He is on holiday with his grandfather and uncle now.”

“I can see in your eyes that you miss him. He is lucky to have you.”

“Thanks!” I say smiling.

We didn’t speak much more. Harper woke up 3 times this night but I manage to feed her and change her without waking him up. I think he needed this rest. She is a little angel I don’t even how her mother was able to abandon her for her mate. She smiled at me this night and that was enough for me to fall in love with her. We walked all together to the packhouse, in peaceful silence. I hugged her before going to the Alpha’s office and Collin promised me he will bring her back soon. I already miss her!

Another boring day, same old... Looking for the potential mole, fixing existential problems. I used my computer to Skype Duncan. I prefer to use my computer because the security system is more efficient than on my phone. There is a high risk they bugged my phone as they don’t trust me.

I really needed to change my mind and Duncan is the best one for that. Seeing his face and his smile reminds me how much I miss him. At least, he having a great time in the Blue Moon pack, with Darius and Chris. Hopefully, Darius will not teach him all his stupid tricks. I count on Chris to make sure of that. He was looking happy there so I was a good idea to let him stay there. And he is not far from here if needed. As for Anton, it’s total silence... His ego is way too big. I stopped to try to call him, there is no use since he is not answering.

Knock, knock, knock.

Who that could be? Why does this day can’t end already!!!



 “Collin? What are you doing here? I thought tonight was your time off.”

“ I’m, I was... I asked the guard to leave as I am here.” He answers looking lost. 


“ Everything is fine?”


“Yes... In fact, no. Can Harper and I stay with you?”

“ Of course!”



“Thank you!” I seeing him going to his car open the truck and take out two big luggage. Well, it looks like he is staying for more than a night this time.

“ Do you want to speak about it?” I ask him to take out a sleeping Harper from her sit.

“No! Can you keep Harper while I’m running, please?”He is really upset.

“ With pleasure! I will cook dinner too.” He nods. After taking in the luggage in the house, he shifts ripping his clothes in the process. Something happened for sure, he is totally pissed...

“ Hello, Angel! You are my sunshine today!” I tell her smiling when Harper wakes up.

Harper is sleeping when he comes back. I saw him running naked thought my living room before he enters the bathroom. I can’t help myself and start laughing. Does he know there are no clothes for in there? Well, he seems to have a hard day so I decided to help him and bring him the first clothes I find in his luggage. I leave them in front of the bathroom and go to the dish in the oven.

“Thank you for bringing clothes and sorry for walking naked in your house.”

“No worries, I’m used to it.”

“ Used to what? Naked people walking around you?”

“You have no idea! A few times I’m thinking my home is a magnet for naked men.” We both laugh! Even it’s more a nervous laugh for him.

“She is pregnant. Piper, I mean. That why they wanted to see my parents yesterday. They are doing a party right now in the packhouse. They are so happy even my parents. They celebrate the next gamma to born. They didn’t do anything for Harper. And since she is born, she is treated like a piece of shit. Like a mistake that doesn’t deserve to live. I fought with my parents. They didn’t understand why I was upset about the party. My mother thinks that I should give her for adoption, that she is just a crying baby and she will never be happy with me. She told that for my sake and if I want to find a mateless she-wolf, I should erase my mistake! She is not a mistake, she is just an innocent baby. Liam ordered me to leave because MY behavior was unacceptable. Mine not them!” He paused a few second but I want him to let it all go. “ I try to not think about what my mother told me about my potential mate but what if she refuses to bond with Harper? It will kill me if I have to reject her.”

“I will kick her ass! You will cross that bridge when needed. Harper is a beautiful gift and the one who doesn’t see that is blind.”

“I didn’t have time to tell them about what you told me yesterday and I don’t think I want anymore. Thank you anyway. For listening to me, for not judging and for not pitying me. I can’t take It anymore. Everybody here sees me at the guy who was dumped by his mate for his brother. I know now I have my own mate but I still feel the pull and it pains me to see them happy and not bothered by my sadness. I feel so guilty when they don’t and it’s not fair. How can she live with the fact she abandons her own daughter when I know If I have to choose it will always be Harper first.”

“ At least, you fucked and marked his mate before him while he will never have this privilege. You can throw that in their face!”

“True. I know it’s not right but that makes me feel better. Thanks!” He says after laughing.

The oven’s timer rings letting us know that dinner is ready. We both sit at the kitchen table.

“Yummy!! This is so good! It’s my favorite dish! What does it call? »

“You already said that yesterday!” I laugh. “ It’s called Moussaka and it’s a greek dish.”

“The recipe comes from your Chef’s boyfriend?”

“Friend with benefits, not boyfriend, but yes. He loved European cuisine, though I prefer French and Italian cuisine.”

“ Did you have a lot of boyfriends and fuck buddies?”

 “It depends what’s a lot for you?” I say being defensive.

 “I shared with you my story but you don’t tell me anything. How can I trust you?”

“I’m sorry but I don’t know if you will repeat everything I’m telling Liam and Aiden.”

 “I swear to share with them - or anyone - only if the information can be useful for them.”


“Fair enough. I had so many friends with benefits that I lost count after 25 but I had only two boyfriends. One of them was my husband for a few months.”

“ Why did you divorce?”

“We canceled the wedding. He met his mate. It was my condition when I said yes to him. We were married for 5 months and 13 days.”

“Why getting married in this case? He broke your heart and you knew it will happen.”

“Because I was dreaming to have a beautiful wedding and he decided to give me it. In fact, I was happy for them, she is such a sweetheart.”

“ Why did you wait for someone available in this case?”

“ Because I did have time.” He is looking with an interrogative air. “Promise me, you will keep it for you.”

“ I swear. Your secret is safe with me.”

“I’m dying Collin.” There is a pregnant pause. He doesn’t know what to say so I continue: “I saved everything for my mate, my first everything. I had hope that at least HE will accept me, see me for who I was. Well as you know I was wrong... Anyway, when I first discovered that I was dying, I was so upset again everybody. I realized later that it was again me that I was the angriest. I was the perfect student, I even graduated younger. I had never date, never stole, never smoke, never drink... I stayed pure for my mate. For what a family, a mate and a pack that will never accept me. I felt so stupid for losing so many times. So I did the only thing that I could do.”

“ This is why you left to start a new life.” He finishes for me.

“ To start my real life. And I had never regretted that decision to not looking back at my past.”

“You were not planning to come back... But You didn’t even say goodbye to your family at least.”

“ I did they just didn’t pay attention.”

“ You didn’t plan on telling them you’re dying either.”

“ Tell them was never an option. I knew I will be disappointed.”

He is looking at me with sadness.

“Be careful, as you, I don’t like pity.” I tell him.

“ Sorry... It’s just that I’m a father now and losing Harper will destroy me. In the way they treat her she makes think of you. It makes everything more real. If I was your father I would like to know I’m going to lose you.”



“ Well, you are not my father.”

After a few minutes, he adds: “You were so alone here and you always were an outsider. And you still are. From Today and as long as you stay I will have your back.”

“Thank you.”
